Four league starts after his move back to Athletic. Seems like his hamstrings are gone.

"I am going through, without a doubt, the most difficult moment of my career. A little over a year ago I started having repetitive muscle problems from which I can't recover.

"For someone like me, who is passionate about his profession and enjoys it intensely every day, it is something very hard. I feel the same energy and enthusiasm for football as I have during my entire career, but injuries are not allowing me to enjoy and be happy.

"I feel that at Athletic Club I have everything I need to be and that makes me suffer even more. I am surrounded by professionals who never stop showing me their help and support, and by peers like no other.

"On occasions, it has crossed my mind to throw in the towel but I would not forgive myself. We want to educate our daughters in perseverance and in overcoming the obstacles that may be found along the way, and that would be exactly the opposite.

"I will continue looking for solutions and working to get back to doing what I like the most and return the love of the people around me."

Loved a bit of Herrera while he was here. Shame he's been crocked since his return to Bilbao, but at least his whole extended family are probably set for life after that crazy contract PSG gave him.

Canny player and top politician as well. Wouldn't be surprised to see him do something in the game going forward either in coaching or a backroom role.

Thought his career ended when Mark Noble picked him up like he's a kitten.

I did like Herrera while he was here. Man marking Hazard was brilliant to watch. He was tenacious and covered a lot of ground, for which he seems to be paying the price for now. Shame.

Sad for him if true. Seems to get a lot of hate/indifference on here but one of the few signings i actually liked in that period.

For all the talk of the Mark Noble incident it should be remembered that when Steven Gerrard tried his hardman act and wiped out Juan Mata, Herrera lunged right back at him to give him one, of course stevie me reacted and got sent off

Yeah I always liked him as well.

That was a great performance, one for the team.

Shame. Proper loved Herrera. His ability was matched with his passion. Under a different regime he could have won a lot more.

Wasn't he rumoured to be on 350k?

Hopefully, maybe things he can do to stay fit. Never want see injuries like that.

I always thought PSG went for him because you beat them... They seem to do that.

Maybe good for him financially but not a great career move.

Yeah, something around there. Similar to the Juve move for Ramsey, some clubs just went mental with the wages they were handing out to free agents for a few years there.

Happy to see him on the pitch, hope he stays healthy for the season and gets to retire on his own terms.

If Ander ever comes by my house, he’ll always be welcome for a cup of tea.

Nice they are keeping a good character with experience there. Lost Muniain, Raul Garcia and Dani Garcia, so good to keep him about.

He wasn't on anything like 350k - that's absolute media nonsense (story originated from the Sun and then the mirror ran with it etc) . It was leaked when he left what his real wage was and it was one hundred fifty grand a week.

Woodward screwed him over and broke his trust. He didn't leave for money, nore did he ask for 300k as the media reported as it's been released what his official wage since he left PSG. He wasn't offered a new contract after winning player of the year and was only on just over 100k at the time. He likely wanted around 150k, which is in line with what PSG offered him.

for reference his psg wage: " The 32-year-old Spaniard’s contract runs to 2024 and includes a monthly salary of €650,000, that’s €150,000 a week – making him the 15th highest paid player in France "

It was spun that he left for money, which is absolute nonsense. Guy loved the club and still does. He hints at Woodward screwing him in his interview here:

"To leave, it was difficult because six months before, I was expecting that offer for me to stay," a tearful Herrera told United's website.
"It's not the moment to talk bad about anyone, and I am not going to do it.

"But I expected a little bit more from the club. I [won] the Player of the Year, and the club didn't call me that summer to sign a new contract, [like] they did with other players.

"That was painful for me. I think I deserved it, and they didn't do it. After, the conditions changed because I was not happy with that little moment with the club.
"At the end of the third season, [I had won] three titles [and] Player of the Year, and they didn't call me in the summer. I was feeling a bit down."

Herrera revealed United did table an offer at the start of his final season, only for him to turn it down as it had failed to come at the right moment for him.

"They called me when I had one year left on the contract and the things, they were not right for me," he said.

"They didn't come at the right moment in my opinion, and in my agent's opinion, and in my family's opinion as well."

Do we seriously believe psg don't pay their players off the books like City do?

Why do you think they would need to do this when they openly pay neymar 600k a week and Messi 1million a week? They have no reason to pay a "secret wage".

PSG aren't under the same scrutiny as premier league clubs. You can see that by their official weekly wage figures and bonuses, again, they have no reason to be paying anyone off the books when they're happy to pay such high wages on the books. I don't think Messi is asking for a second wage on top of his 1mil a week, and mbappe has just left to take a pay cut.

Regardless, his official wage was not 350k.

Because FFP/Squad cost rules come from UEFA. That's what everyone's pretending to comply to.

Both Man City and PSG do it by inflating their revenues, but also probably from taking a lot of the expenses off the books.

Yeah - but i don't think PSG are doing that via their wage reporting as their numbers are so insanely high for star players (i believe they just heavily inflate their sponsorships to cover such massive wages). Otherwise you'd see much lower figures for the likes of Mbappe etc. E.g Haaland being on 300k odd, when we all knows he's on closer to 800/900.

Noble effort @iHicksy but there's a fair bit of dislike for Herrera on here.

I've always liked him, which is actually a fairly rare thing for the majority of our post-SAF players/signings.

Hah thanks! I always felt he had the attitude of a united player and was one of a handful that "got" what it meant to be a united player. Ironically he made way for Fred and herrera was a similar but better version of Fred for me. He had a similar work rate was more technical, better passing range, could shoot and was more consistent. He was the perfect squad player for us.

Brilliantly put.
