and the patriots win the bowl...

One of the better SuperBowls in recent memory. A slugfest the whole way. Carolina could've just as easily won it.

New England Patriots claimed the Super Bowl following a hard-fought 32-29 victory over Carolina Panthers in Reliant Stadium with Adam Vinatieri kicking a last-gasp field goal.
Following a scoreless first quarter, the longest any final has gone without either side scoring, erupted with both sides exploding on offence with Tom Brady and Jake Delhomme showing the form that go their respective sides into the finale.

Defence dominated the game early on with Carolina punting on their first three drives, while The Patriots' inability to score on their opening drive was their first in their last six attempts.

The AFC champions should have taken a 3-0 lead, however Adam Vinatieri surprisingly missed a 31-yard field goal attempt pulling his effort just wide with a chip shot.

The 2001 Super Bowl game-winner then missed his second kick of the game in the second quarter when Shane Burton got a hand on his low attempt and blocked his 36-yard effort.

Despite missing good touchdown scoring opportunities, Tom Brady and company were not to be denied when the side recovered the ball on Carolina's 20-yard line after Richard Seymour recovered Jake Delhomme's fumble.

With a short field to work with Brady capitalised on the turnover by hitting Deion Branch with a five-yard pass for the opening score of the game.

The Panthers, who had done nothing on offence in the first quarter, responded immediately with Delhomme finding Steve Smith with a 39-yard touchdown.

Defence had now gone out the window, with Branch's 52-yard reception setting up a David Givens' five-yard touchdown pass from Brady.

There was still time for Carolina to pull a field goal back when Stephen Davis' a 21-yard run allowed John Kasay to kick a 50-yarder keeping the NFC winners in touching distance.

Despite being held for a three-and-out at the start of the third quarter, The Patriots responded by holding The Panthers who replying by punting the ball back.

Brady then got The Pats offence going again with the quarterback controlling a 71-yard drive for Antoine Smith to bustle his way into the end zone for a six-pointer.

Vinatieri made no mistake with the point after extending their lead to eleven points with just 14 minutes and 49 seconds remaining in the contest.

DeShaun Foster, who destroyed St Louis Rams, in their divisional play-offs clash, replied by braking the tackles and running into the end zone from 33-yards out.

Carolina went for the two-point conversion, with the score 16-21, however they failed leaving themselves a five-point deficit.

However, The Patriots' were running the ball well and with Kevin Faulk and Smith rushing for first downs the 2001 Super Bowl winners were dictating the game.

With Brady set to throw his third touchdown pass of the game, he was intercepted by Reggie Howard in the end zone from nine-yards out to give the underdogs hope.

Their hope was given a massive shot in the arm on the ensuing drive with Delhomme connected with Mushin Mohammed with an 85-yard touchdown pass, with the wide receiver showing great strength to hold off rookie Eugene Wilson.

The Panthers again attempted the two-point conversion, and again missed, however the touchdown left them with their first lead of the contest.

New England's spell behind in the game was short-lived with Brady finding Mike Vrabel in the end zone with a one-yard pass with just two minutes 55 second remaining on the game clock.

The Patriots successfully converted their two-point opportunity with Faulk driving home to give the favourite a late 22-29 lead in America's fourth largest city.

Carolina, as they have done all season, responded in fine fashion with Delhomme netting his third TD of the game finding Ricky Proehl, who earlier caught a 31-yard catch on the drive, from 12-yards for Kasay to level the match with the extra point.

Despite having just one minute eight on the clock The Patriots, just as they did two years ago, found a way to get within field goal range for Vinatieri to once again claim hero status by winning the Super Bowl with a 41-yard-effort.

Great game--the second half was particularly brilliant.

I must say Raoul, your man Dan Morgan had one hell of a game. He is a brilliant player. Delhomme was great as well. Too bad for the Panthers, they could just have easily has won.

Good for the Pat's though. Brady was great--especially the way he recovered after the interception. The Pat's Offensive Line was brilliant, and I thought Vrabel was just outstanding.

I figured it was over when Kasay kicked off out of bounds and gifted NE at the 40. Such a shame a fecking kicker cost the game. Yeah, the D should have stepped up and stopped NE, especially on 3rd and 3 which would have forced a "hail mary" to end the 4th. But the kicker gave NE about 15-25 additional yards, shortening the field, deflating the momentum Carolina had gained, and gifting NE a great chance. I really felt had NE started around the 20 or 25, Bilichick might have taken a shot or two at making a big pass play and if it hadn't worked, would have just ran out the clock and taken his chances in OT. But getting the ball at the 40 made a big difference in how the end played out. Of course we have no idea of how a NE return might have played. It's just as easy to say Carolina stops NE at the 22 as someone says NE gets to the 36.

Someone might point out two missed AV field goals. However, if he makes one, the score would still be tied as all the 2 point attempts would never have been attempted (24-17 vs. 21-16; 24-24 vs. 21-22; 31-24 vs. 29-22; 31-31 vs. 29-29). If he makes both, and you can't really say he should make the blocked attempt as that was a clean cut play, then it's 34-31 and NE just runs out the clock after a Carolina onside attempt...depending on what happens.

Such a shame for Carolina and Kasay...I really feel Carolina deserved this one. Great game though, one of the best even though I felt it was going to be a shit game half way into the 2nd quarter.

Feel really sorry for Jake Delhomme. I reckon he deserved the MVP award most and it would´ve been really nice if a former Frankfurt Galaxy QB had won the big one. But as it had to be a New England player I probably would´ve picked Mike Vrabel.

Totally agree with MM regarding Kasay´s kickoff. Giving up a 17 yard pass on the 3rd down just before the game winning FG was really bad as well.

Great game and such a shame that they lose it because of a fecked up kick off. Carolina made that Superbowl for me.

I must admit that this was my first NFL game :nervous: . Some may say that this is very boring, all those rules and breakes and lighter version of rugby but nobody can say that it isn't entertaining. . I haven't gone sleep before that and tried to watch the live coverage it telly. It finished at 3.50 AM so I had only 3 to sleep. After that I had totally fecked that at school. Can't be worse  . I hardly can stand and what is more I have to prepare for tomorrow's maths test :nervous: .

I hate it when people blame the outcome of the game on one play. There are so many plays that can changed the outcome of the game. Only because Kasay's ugly kick happened at the end he gets to be the villian? As you said the defense could have stopped the Patriots. If they didn't drop in a zone, and layed of the blitz, they could have stopped that play, which would have resulted in a last second hail mary.

Or how about the offence not getting a first down untill midway in the second quarter or so.

Carolina should have won it, but it wasn't Kasey, nor the coach going for two that lost the game.

the whoe grisly thing was just one bunch of bonehead americans banging against another load of bonehead americans .....and all that patroitism ...yuk
