...made by one of my mates as we sat and watched the game last night.
Now my mate has played at a preety high level. He played for current National Champions Sydney Olympic a few years ago but has now given the game away.
Anyway what he said was that United should try and play Keane as a sweeper like Matthaus was playing in the latter stages of his career.
He said Keane reads the game brilliantly and is quick enough to play sweeper and he would also be able to come up when needed to give that decisive through ball.
I tend to agree with him and think it would be a brilliant idea.
So here is what our STRONGEST team would look like....

Barthez

G Neville Ferdinand Keane Silvestre
Beckham Veron Scholes Giggs
Van Nistelrooy Solskjaer

Not bad eh ?

You know Keano wouldnt give defenders an inch and working next to Rio would make a formidable partnership !

On current form you should at least put Butt in there.

Keane would be wasted anywhere other than right in the middle of the action, he has a good few yrs left in him in the middle.

IMHO I would rather have Butt than Veron. But I just put that side because im sure most posters would rather Veron.
But like I said, id rather have Butty in there.

Agree. But do you think he should be used if things get really serious - i.e. more injuries at the back.

I think that will definitely be a possibility some time to come ... may be another 2 season .... when Keano lose his fitness a bit(not quite possible eh? ) ... Everybody know he's briliant ... but at this point of time, if he's being pulled back to the back then it'll really be a waste ... If anything you see - Fergie has put him even further up last nite ... compare to Veron and Butty ..

seem to remember he played sweeper sort of v Chelsea last year ......quickly moved forward as we were being over run mid field ...one day maybe but not yet

agreed. Id hate to see him at CB in the near future, itd be such a waste. we'd miss his drive and energy from midfield. As good as Butt is as being the 'holding' player who destroys attacks, he doesnt bring the same drive to the team.

I remember some (including me) tipping for Keane to play in defence late last year in the middle of our bad patch. He did, I recall, against Chelsea and we lost 3-0. No reason why we shouldnt give it another chance should injuries persist though. But Id rather keep Keane in the middle at his best and sign Escude. :D

If the rb situation was serious and considering we have a lot of central midfielders i would consider putting him in there. CB im not so sure and i wouldnt like to see us upheaving everything and changing to a 5 man sweeper system or a 3 man central defence with wingbacks.
