Altrincham 0-5 Manchester United XI

Altrincham carved out three half chances in the opening stages but once Mark Lynch had put United ahead after 11 minutes and the skilful Danny Webber had added a second after 17 minutes, Altrincham were left chasing the game. Although the United first team were absent in Norway, the swift, one-touch football of their young reserve side was highly impressive. Their skill and pace brought two more first-half goals from Lynch (23 mins) and Nardiello (25 mins). Lynch completed his hat-trick and the scoring after 56 minutes. Alty's substitute goalkeeper Nick Stephens made a number of good saves in the last half hour to prevent further damage in a game watched by 735 spectators including Gary Neville and Nicky Butt.

From ManUtd.com:
Manchester United reserves romped home to an impressive 5-0 victory over Altrincham last night - 19-year-old forward Matthew Williams clinching a hat-trick inside the hour.

United reserves were 4-0 up by half-time, Danny Webber and Daniel Nardiello adding to two first half efforts from Williams.

The young side, all aged 21 or under, had the game tied up within the first 45 minutes, although the second half saw Matthew Williams claim his hat-trick in the 57th minute to complete the rout.

Team-sheet confusion meant that the p.a. announcement indicated Matthew Williams was coming on to the field in the 58th minute, when in fact he was being substituted for Jimmy Davis. The Altrincham players had seen quite enough of the United striker for one evening.

Rod Thornley, United's club masseur, pulled on an Altrincham shirt almost scoring with a header.

Where feckitup got Lynch from I don't know.

Call me crazy...

But living a stones throw from Altrincham and knowing the size of that 'club', I think I'll go with Man Utd's version of events.

Especially seeing as Williams started and was subbed in the second half for Davis.

I may be wrong...but I'll be comfortably wrong.
