What is alternative comedy?

And what is it an alternative to?

Only asking this because I was just watching Bottom live and thinking that comedy has changed over the last few years with shows such as Little Britain now more mainstream, whereas a few years ago the likes of Bottom, blackadder etc were not really the norm.

If you could mention any one comedy show at the moment would you be able to categorise it as alternative or not alternative?

Alternative to the working men's clubs comedy circuit in the eighties. But you're right to say that alternative comedy has now become the mainstream. People are just too lazy to change the name though.
