..........wants to leave Villa.

Would he be worth pursuing by United?
When we first saw Henchoz at Rovers I never would have rated him but beside a decent defender in Hypia its a different story. Maybe Alpay could form a partenership with Rio?

Agreed maybe O'Shea could and in all probablity SAF wouldn't even look at more centre backs. I just think he would be a great addition.

AEBM, do you really think we don't need more centre backs. Long term Blanc won't be around and Wes is simply beginning to look too injury prone :( . That only leaves O'Shea, Rio and Gaz (who already had a job at right full). I think we could do with more cover in the centre. Big Time.

Before we signed Ferdinand, I actually thought we may go for him.

But our money would be better invested elsewhere.

Murt, cd & Amir,

Alpay's 29 years old & 6ft 2ins.

Didn't he do well at the WC, especially against Brazil in the semis. & I think he's been a solid & reliable defender for both Villa & Turkey & wudn't have minded if United went for him b4 Rio arrived.

Only problem is his age & the need for a work permit & I think Villa wudn't have let him go cheaply!

Alpay is a very good defender who'll probably cost 6-8m and I wouldn't assume have permit problems as he's already playing in England.

But we have Blanc, Rio and O'Shea and believe it or not, Wes is coming back one day. There are more urgent needs than a centerhalf.

Agreed, especially with Mexes coming in for Blanc next year.

Sorry Amir - I wasn't meaning that he wud have problems obtaining a work permit, but when buying a player who requires a WP, it reduces the option of a club to pick others - In Utd's case Veron, Fortune, & possibly Carini ( don't know whether he has an Italian passport ) & Sorin.

It wud have been a non-issue if Alpay was a target b4 Rio's signing but like you said, United's priorities shud now be elsewhere.

ps - btw, I wonder whether the rules limiting the number of non-EU players have changed? Arsenal seems to be having quite a few of them - Silva, Luzny, Stephanovs, Juan, Edu, Lauren, Kanu, Toure.

There were plenty of articles about this a while back. SAF has spoken with the manager, who he's good friends with, and the player, but it was decided that he would benefit by staying for another year with Auxerre. He may go to Italy, or us or Liverpool, as the strongest links have been these. We'll see next year though.
