i7 processor should trump the PS3 somewhat.

It's a PC dressed up as a console, and as such it suffers from PC gaming being dragged down by console spec games.

And trump the PS3? It'll trump the next generation of consoles too. Unfortunately the games and graphics won't, because PC specific features are getting fewer and further between.

What game format does it used?

PC games I take it?

What does the controller look like? or keyboard + mouse?

Does it do anything apart from play games?

Knowing Alienware, it'll be worth around 3x the amount of a top-end gaming PC.

It seems like a pretty pointless concept too, you can easily plug your PC into your TV via HDMI if you so wish to do so.

So it's a high-spec PC made to look like a console?

EDIT: and the i7 one starts at £900, feck that

It's a modern mid-high spec PC dressed up as a games console.

They've done well with the size, though the power is external, and it'll plug nicely into your big tv and run at 1080p (if you so choose, depending on what system you buy/game settings).

Everything will look much better than the PS3/360 versions, online will be better too, however for the money you are paying out it fecking well should be!

I'd personally just build my own PC and plug it in to my HDTV.

Mid-High spec.

It's a valiant effort though, PC gaming does need to make a comeback and lead the way again since gaming has gotten stale without it (both graphically and gameplay wise), but unless they come up with a way to cut piracy, it just isn't going to happen.

Top end package is £899. Can build self those specs for £500-600.

Comeback? What, did people stop playing games? I guess Skyrim, Fallout, all the MMORPG's, CoD, Battlefield and the fact that The Witcher 2, a 5 year old game, sold 5 million copies last years are all definite signs of the fall of PC gaming.

You are preaching to the choir here.

But let's face it, PC gaming is in an all time low. The fact you cite games like the likes of Skyrim and Fallout which are basically console games ported as an example of otherwise, I'll overlook ;)

For fecks sake, we can't even get decent FOV anymore!

Yeah it's strange. What's the difference between that an an alienware laptop? I've not read up on it but if the only difference is the case to make it a console then they're taking the piss.

What makes any regular console differ from an ordinary PC? It sits in your living room and plugs into your telly.

Mostly how games are coded and how different architectures interacts differently with its hardware and software.

Sort of. The 360 is basically a PC (with the endian reversed ;)), so was the original and the Gamecube and Dreamcast. Just with locked systems and various plays on processor cache and gpu speeds.

Consoles should be easier to work with because they are a locked system, but those systems are built with costs in mind so you also have bottlenecks to overcome. On a pc you have more range of configurations, but thanks to the likes of OpenGL and DirectX it's less and less of a problem and actually easier in many ways to work with - mostly due to the fact you can aim for a spec and then let the user decide.

Then you have Sony, who decide that people should be doing things an entirely different way to what you know. I like the forward thinking approach there, however you aren't going to get thousands of people who are under extremely stupid deadlines to change their whole mindset easily ;)

So yeah, this is basically a PC dressed as a console which is basically a PC dressed as a PC with locked specs.

That has to be one of the stupidest idea's i've ever seen out of a computer manufacturer. Not only is it massively overpriced, but the whole point of consoles is the whole plug and play concept. This will literally take minutes to boot up and have the thing even running before playing games. Not even taking into account the potential for viruses.

Mac mini's work because it's not trying to be something it's not. This isn't.

Also I'd love to see an i7 run up against a cell processor. If weaste's previous discussion are to go by 'and it's something I take his opinion very seriously on' the only thing holding the ps3 back from even monstering this is an update GPU and additional ram.

One word:

Dell.

It's not even remotely a console.

Just a shite bit of marketing here is all, they are good at duping people into thinking they are a decent brand some how, I'll give them that.

For me, PC gaming has always been a mile and a half better than console gaming. When you compare them all against each other over the years there is only really one difference and that is the controller. Mouse and Keyboard is just something I have always felt more freedom with due to the number of keys and the free movement of the mouse.

Kinda off topic, but just my 2 cents. If it was priced a bit better it might actually be competition.

Agree with pexbo. And whilst it's a bit of a pain in the ass, the security measures being put into pc games with limited activations etc may end up being what saves the pc gaming industry.

Personally I feel that if a game is really good I don't mind paying for it - I have bought games which I had previously downloaded on that principle.

I think it just shifted from fps and rts to rpg games in multiplayer. I never did much multiplayer gaming on PC. Only CS 1.6.

I still don't understand people who play fps games on a console. That's a ridiculous waste of money imo. It's alright for some mp fun in Time Splitters or games like that but playing it seriously is stupid to me. Doesn't work if you don't have a mouse.

It's such bad value for money, you can get a pre-built system with the same specification for 25-30% less.

Don't understand what's so funny. It's exactly the same what Apple does. Make it look nicer and put big mark up on it. It's by no means a bad strategy to go by now. Watch some Apple bashers jump on this "console". People mostly don't build their own system.

I do both. You aren't going to be playing Mortal Kombat or God of War or Demon Souls on a PC. Never mind the sports games.

FPS games I don't touch on a console. Same with rts games and most rpg's.

It's probably impractical but like a lot of people these days I have my Computer rigged up to both a monitor and a Plasma, I've also got a wireless controller for my PC which means I can play certain games if I wanted to sit back and play on the screen but I tend to just stick to FPS, RPG's and Strategies which are all much better on the PC.

I've always thought that a gaming operating system would be a great route to take so loads of independent companies could create the hardware much like Alienware has done here. Both Windows and MacOS are actually quite poorly optimised for gaming with the various tasks that run in the background so it'd make sense.

What the price comparison with a PS3? I own a PS3... it would be really difficult these days to beat a PS3 especially since it has been Jailbroken... I'm having real fun... playing games, watching movies, watching webtv, surfing the web... a real gem of a media center! :)

My PS3 is always in a broken state. Not a fan of the old 40gb ones. Have had 4 die on me, all in warranty.
