Ali Benarbia on United and City

Elfie

Guest
In this week France Fotball Benarbia declares
"Manchester City is the club everyone is talking about in Manchester.
It is our club that people in town talk about and our club only.
People wear the City shirt in the streets and not United's. City are Manchester's club ".

Well Benarbia, Anelka, Schmeichel and some others aren't from Manchestery ? City has a lot of foreigners like United...

And I don't think the 60 000 people who attend games every week are foreigners too...

I was in Manchester this year(the week we signed Rio) and I saw some UTD shirts in the downtown area and not one single City shirt..that was my first trip to the city.

These stereotypes are totally wide of the mark....

A lot more foreigners in the OT crowd than at City,I'd guess. And where do you think the majority of the 60,000 come from?....not Manchester that's for sure.I think Benarbia is merely stating an obvious truth ie City fans are largely from Manchester, whereas Man Utd fans are from everywhere !

The majority do come from Manchester, though that United fans are from everywhere is a pretty fair comment.

If that were the case then it could only be a slim majority once all the London,Irish and Scandinavian contingents are excluded.Even if 60% of the crowd came from (Greater ?)Manchester ,it would still be a lower percentage than at Maine Rd where I'd guess the percentage is over 90%.Basically,City fans are more representative of Manchester than you lot.

All rubbish........

In the seventies (when we never won anything) we often had sixty thousand people at Old Trafford...

I guess that they would be fairly representative of Manchester people...

City were getting nearly forty thousand as well...

But now that we are successful United fans aren't from Manchester, well I am and I always have been...

Well, if you exclude the 10000 or so students studying in Manchester who watch City every week, you could say the same for City couldn't you?

Anyway, why are you all so defensive about City fans being more likely to come from Manchester than you?I don't understand, surely the point of Man Utd is that it's a global commercial institution attracting fans (and their hard earned cash) from all over the globe?
Manchester is only relevant in that a)It's where you play your games, b)It's still part of your name and c) because of a historic tie to the city (small 'c').

Most of your world wide fans probably have never been to Manchester and wouldn't be able to find it on a map of the UK.So why this sentimental attachment??Hardly the commercial reality these days ,is it?Listen,Manchester United is now just a brand name and it can only be a matter of time before some marketing genius at OT decides it would be more inclusive to drop 'manchester' from the name so appealing to all world wide fans with a club that transcends narrow parochial attachments and making even more money from them. You wait,it won't be long before the powers that be at OT decide it would be better to rename the club as just 'UNITED'.Just think of the marketing spin-offs !!

I'm simply pointing out your misconceptions and the errors in your post. Nothing sensitive about it.

put yer spoon away lad.

thought-provoking stuff though, and given the wimbledon move to milton keynes heralding a new age of football franchising, you could be onto something. . .

Actually,I was born and grew up Highbury....went to school in Highbury Park if you really are that interested.I'd say you are right about lots of fans in north london being from the 'dark side'
;) but they certainly don't outnumber Gooners. In fact, there are probably more Gooners in north london than spurs fans.North London covers a much bigger area than Manchester and depending where you come from is often a guide to whether you are likely to be a spurs fan or Arse fan.For example,if you live in Edmonton, the chances are you will support spurs. If in Highgate, more likely to be a Gooner.

being from manchester meself, i can tell you with a strait face (regardless of a dodgy concensus done in greater manchester by the evening news) that there are more citeh fans in "manchester" than united. walking down any of the main streets in manchester, of course you're going to see both kits represented... but lots of londoners, foriegners, etc. come to manchester just for united. most of the city fans are working, earning a living etc. what you also have to look at is, how does one define manchester? truthfully, old trafford isn't in manchester proper, and neither is salford (full of united fans), whereas maine road, and the surrounding areas (longsight, burnage, etc.) is! ali bernarbia is clearly just trying to stir it up a bit... creating a bit of controversy before the derby match. whether or not we chose to buy into that is up to us. all that matters to me is that i'm a united fan, from manchester, and i don't give a toss about everyone else is... shouldn't that be the case for everyone?

Prat ;)

I remember reading in that venerable, though admittedly extremely biased mag, the ol' Red Issue, that most city fans hail from Rochdale.

Probably not true. Food for thought though. ;)

Sorry pal, I don't want to get picky, but I live in Burnage, and i can assure you that even here, it's probably 50:50, and that's probably as good as it gets for the bittermen. In parts of Manchester (Collyhurst, Newton Heath, etc) the few who support citeh are seen as a bit peculiar, and are normaly killed at birth!

manchester united are the club that have the hugest fans in the world, and 1 more thing, there is only one ali in manchester. ali benarbia, teh bset plyaer ever said kvein kgeann

btw mancity only have 1 fan, he is noel gallagher

Does he actaully live in Manchester? - u would not of thought so. typical City clown.....just laugh at him like the rest of us

I'm from Burnage/East Didsbury, too. And I'd say it is red. There are more blues the closer you get to Didsbury, unfortunately, but they definitely don't outnumber United.

I went to school in Rusholme/Levenshulme (Xaverian), and sadly there were quite a few massives around there.

I`m from the northside and all the areas roundh ere are big red areas i.e moston, ancoats, harpurhey, newton heath, collyhurst.

In Rochdale there are a lot of old council overspill estates i.e milnrow where reds moved to 20 years ago but their sons started going to city matches with their mates cos they could`nt get into OT.Even then in places like middleton, which has a lot of blues there is still a large red contingent.

agreed about Burnage..

and Rusholme is predominantly Red.. strange coz its only seconds away from Main Road.

He's talking a load of bollocks I've been sat on Piccadilly gardens this afternoon and decided to count the shirts.

United 32 Massives 13.

Benarbia is absolutely confused in what he is saying. I think he means that the majority of city supporters are from Manchester, whereas the majority of Utd. supporters are not from Manchester, but that is only cos utd have millions more supporters.

I agree.MUFC is a global phenomenon and the result of a brilliant marketing strategy. In fact, they could play anywhere....and still command such support....couldn't they ??
