I'm currently listening to his EP for the film Submarine and was wondering what the general opinion is of him as a songwriter. For me he's been consistently brilliant ever since he came onto the scene. Piledriver Waltz and Stuck On The Puzzle from the EP are brilliant, and it was no surprise to find that Brick By Brick was written by Matt Helders instead of Turner.

How highly is he rated by you lot? I'm kind of expecting someone to reply and shoot me down and say there's plenty better but I haven't heard it. I'm sure there have been better, but what about in terms of the last 10 years? How good can he be?

I thought Last Shadow Puppets were excellent. Disappointed their second album is taking so long. Most of his endevours have been successful. It's fairly clear he's "the talent" in them too. Fit bird.

He's my favourite lyricist who is still at his peak. (Dylan is my overall favourite, but he hasn't been at the same level consistently since John Wesley Harding) I thought Humbug was criminally underrated by some people.

I think whenever I've heard Tracks he's written i've been very impressed with the quality of the song writing, perhaps on most occasions more than the actual musicianship on the tracks.

He does come across as a curious song writer though, I think its clear that he grew up listening to music that most kids within his age range simply wouldn't. I think thats a brilliant and positive thing but I think where that might become a hinderance is as he grows older. It clear that he is channeling influences from his childhood but just how good a song writer he can become remains to be seen because sooner or later he has to begin to define his own style of writing and expression.

I am not sure he has his own song writing style as yet - just a very good intuition of how to write a good song drawn from listening and channeling those early influences - however all excellent or legendary song writers have become so by finding their own voice and means of expression. Does Alex have that in to be a truly great song writer? Yes, but he needs to find his own voice and i'm not so sure he's done that as yet.

I think he's an outstanding song-writer, if only for his way with words. He's a brilliant lyricist. Best I can think of over the last decade or so. Maybe the best since Morrisey?

Agreed. Some of his lines are fecking incredible. Stuff like 'Mardy Bum' sticks with you long after you hear it.

I think moses discussed the rumours of Richard Hawley being a 'secret' songwriter in the Arctic Monkeys in another thread. I don't know much about it all, in truth.

Very good.

I don't think it's a coincidence that all of his projects have had success.

He's defo in that league. Jarvis was alright.

That's what was being whispered in some corridors alright, but I think it stemmed more from the maturity in the lyrics on that debut album. That and the fact they were good mates.

Has anyone actually seen the film yet? I'm thinking of going to see it, it's directed by Richard Ayoade (which is why Turner's done the OTS - he directs their videos) who I think's awesome and it's supposed to be very funny.
