So we have already had a couple of these '... of the decade' threads and Im sure there will be many more until the end of the year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
NME have their top50 of the decade in this week's issue, seems various industry type voted:
"Bands such as Radiohead and Arctic Monkeys, plus record producers and label bosses were among those who cast their votes."
The Top 100 Greatest Albums Of The Decade | NME.COM

and here is the NME Top10:

1. The Strokes - Is This It
2. The Libertines - Up The Bracket
3. Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
4. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell
6. PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
7. Arcade Fire - Funeral
8. Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
9. The Streets - Original Pirate Material
10. Radiohead - In Rainbows

Obviously, NME is basically indie music so the list is dominated by that type of stuff but overall is is not a bad list - although I dont really know the albums at No5&6.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

For comparison here is the Pitchfork Top 10 (this is picked entirely from staff of the website):

10: The Avalanches - Since I Left You (2000)*
09: Panda Bear - Person Pitch (2007)
08: Sigur Rós - Ágætis byrjun (2000)*
07: The Strokes - Is This It (2001)*
06: Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica (2000)*
05: Jay-Z - The Blueprint (2001)
04: Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002)
03: Daft Punk - Discovery (2001)
02: Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004)*
01: Radiohead - Kid A (2000)*
Pitchfork: Staff Lists: The Top 200 Albums of the 2000s: 20-1

More eclectic than the NME list - never heard of Panda Bear but I have all the other albums.

I will add any other Top10's that I come across from recognised sources.

Only ever heard 1, 2, and 4. They were quite good however.

One of the RHCP's would prob make my top ten from this decade, trying to think of others is difficult though.

I have all of those albums. Well done me. Though I'm not sure XTRMNTR should be on there. It's a good, interesting album, but it's a bit too patchy for my tastes.

I was suprised to see it there to be honest - I have quite a few Primal Scream albums and I rarely listen to that one - some good tracks but plenty of filler.

I see Arcade Fire got in there by virtue of every one of their band members voting for them.

It is a fantastic album although if I had to choose I'd go for Neon Bible.

Crap list and anyway, wouldn't it be better to wait until the end of the decade to decide what the top 10 albums are?

Never understood the fuss about arcade fire, some fantastic stuff but the majority is quite boring.

  • dizzee rascal-boy in da corner
  • the cribs - the cribs
  • electric soft parade - holes in the wall
  • miss black america - God bless miss black america
  • We are Scientists - with love and squalor
  • jamie t - panic prevention
  • Idlewild - the remote part
  • eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
  • kings of leon - aha shake heartbreak
  • laura cantrell - humming by the flowered vine
  • kt tunstall - eye to the telescope
  • maxiimo park - a certain trigger

Some of my favourites, although I tend to listen to older stuff.

What I thought was interesting was how many of those albums were debuts;

1. The Strokes - Is This It (2001)
2. The Libertines - Up The Bracket (2002)
3. Primal Scream - XTRMNTR (2000)
4. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
(2006)
5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever To Tell (2003)
6. PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea (2000)
7. Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004)
8. Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights (2002)
9. The Streets - Original Pirate Material (2002)
10. Radiohead - In Rainbows (2007)

And how most of them come from the early part of the decade, there's only 2 later than 2004, and none at all from the last 2 years. To me that suggests that people voted for albums that are more... established, and you might see a very different list if the vote was taken in another 10 years time.

That aside, I agree with a few on the list (Is This It is a great album, as is Turn On The Bright Lights, Funeral and XTRMNTR) but some are silly. In Rainbows was just not that good, and as much as I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fever to Tell is probably their weakest overall album, carried by 3 or 4 great songs (Maps, Date With The Night, Y-Control and maybe Pin).

It's all silly though as any such list is so subjective. The other thing I'd highlight is the almost complete absence of Hip-Hop and Electronica from the list. There's The Streets and Primal Scream, both of whom are pretty indie-fied. For a contrast here's Pitchfork's list (I don't agree with this one either, but it's very different):

20: Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights (2002)*
19: Spoon - Kill The Moonlight (2002)*
18: Kanye West - Late Registration (2005)
17: LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver (2007)
16: Sufjan Stevens - Illinois (2005)*
15: The Knife - Silent Shout (2006)*
14: Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion (2009)
13: Outkast - Stankonia (2000)*
12: The White Stripes - White Blood Cells (2001)*
11: Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele (2000)
10: The Avalanches - Since I Left You (2000)*
09: Panda Bear - Person Pitch (2007)
08: Sigur Rós - Ágætis byrjun (2000)*
07: The Strokes - Is This It (2001)*
06: Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica (2000)*
05: Jay-Z - The Blueprint (2001)
04: Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002)
03: Daft Punk - Discovery (2001)
02: Arcade Fire - Funeral (2004)*
01: Radiohead - Kid A (2000)*

Still a flawed list, but one that I'd say is far more representative of music that really shaped the last decade than the NME's usual suspects.

Having dismissed the NME and Pitchfork's lists, here's mine (in no particular order):

  • Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
  • Explosions In The Sky - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place
  • Sigur Ros - ( )

  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones
  • Malcolm Middleton - 5:14fluoxytineseagullalcoholjohnnicotine

Keep the different lists coming guys - whether they are your own or from an online source - would be interesting to pick out those albums that are continually mentioned.

As mentioned in the OP, i totally agree that the NME list only reflects one type of music - I will do my own list at some point but will need to think about it as this is serious shit !

Any "best of" with these two in are ridiculous.

Although seldom seen kid and stankonia are great albums

I dont think you should be allowed to criticise anyone else's choices until you have posted your own - it's only fair !

mmmmm just shows my age , I dont have a single one of these

Nothing ridiculous about personal choice. My favourite 20 of the decade, not my opinion on which were the best. Clearly Delorentos haven't had the best album of the last 10 years considering 95% of people on here won't have a clue who they are.

21. Aidan Parle - Redcafe Sessions.

You're right!

i did in another thread a little while ago, hang on

Radiohead - In rainbows
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene

Beck - Sea Change
Sunset rubdown - shut up i am dreaming (hmm personal choice here i think)
yyy's - fever to tell
Outkast - speakerboxx/the love below (i think stankonia is better but this album had a good vibe about it
Bjork - vespertine(this album is the feeling of lying under covers in midwinter)
The Streets - Original pirate material fantastic blend of urban poetry and dancetunes.

yeah, you're right. this is tough. I havent listened to nearly enough music from this decade

As said these lists are totally subjective and say more about a persons taste in music then outline albums of the decade.

Pretty much every album list so far, is rammed to the rafters with indie-pop music. Its not reflective of everyone and its certainly not reflective of what is currently considered the most popular music, which going on the charts, is popified hip hop.

On a side note; Radiohead - In Rainbows..really?

What i dont know i cant comment on, i do know snow patrol, and i do know they are utter turd however.

I bet you like athlete keane and embrace as well?

I just dont understand the appeal is all, like ok, i can understand why you think snow patrol might be "alright" but i cant fathom how you can put them in twice! for your favourite album of the decade!

Well played sir. The only one album listed in this thread, that i personally agree with being in the top 10 .

I tried to pick albums that i thought had a big influence on the music scene.

In rainbows i put because i like it very much, reckoner and all i need are brilliant. However the online, pay what you want thing was a major step forward for music.

i put vespertine on there because she tried to capture her homeland on the album, people treading in snow, icicles hitting the floor etc.

The outkast album is almost a definite shoe in. It was one of the earlier hip hop albums to mix pop and hip hop and do it well! kanyes album did it well too around the same time, but i prefer outkast, i think they are more eccentric. Hey ya is one of the best songs in the last 20 years imo. (although overplayed)

Its similar with the streets, the lyrics are bang on reflections of modern man and society - continued in a grand dont come for free - plus the music behind it is clever too.

the rest are mostly personal choices.

As said these lists are totally subjective and say more about a persons taste in music then outline albums of the decade.

Yes but if you pick out the albums that are mentioned again and again by different people then those are the ones to focus on.

There have been a couple of more eclectic lists posted already anyway.
Plus I will be redressing the focus on indie rock whenever I get round to posting my list - i realised that someone had already attempted a thread like this a few months ago and this is what I posted at the time ...

i started to try and do this but it is just too difficult so since I have nothing better to do, i will just throw in some names that havent been mentioned to add to the options ...

aphex twin - drukqs
Nitin Sawhney - Beyond Skin
Skream - Skream!
Roots Manuva - Run Come Save Me
UNKLE - War Stories
Dizzee Rascal - Maths + English
Burial - Burial
Lemon Jelly - Lost Horizon
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Amadou & Miriam - Dimanche a Bamako
65daysofstatic - One Time For All Time
DJ Dangermouse - The Grey Album
Coldcut - Sound Mirrors
Gotan Project - La Revancha Del Tango
Ian Brown - Music Of The Spheres ...

Kid A should definitely be on that list instead of In Rainbows. Actually, Pitchfork's list is pretty much better in all aspects.

My problem with this decade is I was only 14 when it started and although I've listened to quite a lot of albums from the past 10 years I've spent most of it catching up with the previous 100 years.

This too.

2004 for me i was listening to led zep/hendrix/stone roses blah blah etc.

90's for me is my favourite decade for music, this decade is too maudlin for my tastes

Athlete had one semi decent tune, the name of which I can't remember. Keane are utter tripe and don't get me started on Embrace. Don't know what made you think I liked them considering I just gave you my top 20 albums and none of them appeared but ok. :wenger:

I'm not gonna bother posting the albums which I think is the "best" (As I think it's pretty impossible) and just post my favorite 20, in no particular order.

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Sigur Rós - Ágætis byrjun
J Dilla - Donuts
DJ Shadow - The Private Press
Editors - The Back Room
M83 - Saturdays = Youth
Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor
Onra - Chinoiseries
Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights
Nujabes - Modal Soul
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Ages Of Understandment
CYNE - Evolution Fight
Binary Star - Masters of the Universe
Blu And Exile - Below The Heavens
Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Jose Gonzalez - Veneer
The Streets - Original Pirate Material
Common - Be
Phoenix - It's Never Been Like That

I think this decade's been a shocker for music but here's a few that stand out for me:

Doves - Lost Souls
Kings of Leon - Youth and Young Manhood
The Strokes - Is This It
Kasabian - Kasabian
The Coral - The Coral
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
Elbow - Seldom Seen Kid
The White Stripes - Elephant
The Libertines - Up The Bracket

I don't think this decade has been all that much weaker than any other tbh, it just depends how aware you allow yourself to be of the full range of the current music scenes, rather than only hearing what the radio offers you. That, and of course clinging on nostalgically to the music you grew up with.

This decade, you've had great music in a wide range of genres and sub-genres. Even just within Rock;

Blues-Rock

Garage Rock

Post-Rock

Balkan Folk

Psychedelic Rock

Experimental Rock

Yes, the good music is dead

That's one of the most ridiculous assertions I've ever heard on the 'caf, and that's saying something.

Having seen your list though, it'd probably help if you tried some new bands, instead of listening to bands who peaked some time in the late 80s. How old are you out of interest?
