From the Sunday Mirror :

FOOTBALL: UNITED WANT SMITH
MANCHESTER United will attempt to sign Leeds striker Alan Smith when the transfer window reopens in January.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes the capture of the 22-year-old England marksman, rated at around £15million, will help United revive their faltering Premiership title campaign.

Leeds have been made aware of United's interest in Smith, who grabbed all four goals in 4-1 demolition against UEFA Cup opponents Hapoel last week, and are adamant he is not for sale at any price.

They will resist any attempt to lure the player away - but Ferguson is determined to get his man.

He capitalised on financial problems at the Yorkshire club in the summer when he signed Smith's former team-mate Rio Ferdinand.

He believes Ferdinand could persuade Smith to join him at Old Trafford.

Leeds fans would be furious if Smith is allowed to go but the club's crippling debts, which are reported to be around £60million, will encourage Ferguson to make an irresistible offer.

The Elland Road club will fight off interest by offering Smith a new double your money five year contract worth around £42,000 a week even though he has 30 months remaining on his present deal.

A club spokesman said: "Alan Smith has this week reaffirmed to the club that he only wants to play for Leeds United, no one else.

"He is a Leeds lad and he loves the club. Far from going anywhere, we will sit down with Alan to thrash out a longer term deal which we hope to conclude before the end of the season."

Ironically Leeds made a similar noises when United stepped up their interest in Ferdinand.

Chairman Peter Ridsdale maintained the player was going nowhere and no amount of money would prize him away from the club.

But two months after United finally went public with their interest Ferdinand became sufficiently unsettled to hand in a transfer request to complete a record breaking £30million move.

Smith is a dynamic modern day striker who's aggression and will to win is what is admired most by Fergie.

hmmmm...

i said a while ago that id love to see smith partnering ruud, like like he did when viduka was on form because they were a great partnership. hes a mean fecker that can hold the ball, shame he's leeds through and through, unlike rio...

I really like Smithy. he could be a combatative forward like Hughes was for us. And it was reported in the press that he had a meeting with Risdale about his future.

Smith.

Is already established in all comps.

Cisse is untried at PL level and would cost more money.

can u see Leeds accepting an offer for Smith, and then secondly smith accepting a move honestly?, after the Rio innodent Leeds wont sell a big player again, they only sold rio cos of the debt. El Tel aint THAT stupid, the fans would go ape shit.

Be realistic. <img src="graemlins/yawn.gif" border="0" alt="[Yawn]" /> <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

Yea but anyone can be bought, if the price is right. :p

if we do manage to buy him it'll be for another outrageous amount of money. i should think sir alex will have learnt that he needs to spend on a few players, and not just splash out on one.

Comparing Smith to Cisse is like comparing Goater to Ronaldo imo. The choice is easy really.

No Thanks!!! Smith can stay where he is, languishing in a mediocre football club!!!

Smith's got what we are missing massively at the moment, heart and desire. I'd have Smith anytime before gambling on a more gifted, fancy-dan from Southern Europe or Soth America.

Cover story. Fowler is the one coming in. ;)

I want Cisse to join more than anyone.

Smith and Keane in the same team. Hmm, wonder how many times they'd finish a match with 9 players? :D

15 million, I thought we don't have that kind of money at United? I wouldn't want Smith here and fortunately I cannot see it happening. He gets too many red cards and is suspended for so many vital games for Leeds. Our Ole is better than him!

Did rather see Fowler at United than Smith. If Fowler can be motivated to regain his fitness an recapture the form he had at unfilled he'd be great for us. He is so quick in the box, before you've had a chance to think what he's going to do he's already done it and the ball is in the back of the net.

No thanks and it wont happen, there is no way Leeds are gonna flog us another player, the Leeds fans would lynch them! apart from that he is a Leeds player through and through, he isnt gonna swan off and join the enemy.

Saw Smithy on Soccer AM (post Rio signing) and when asked if there was a team he would never play for, he replied immediately Man Utd. Well he can f*** off then!

spot on!

for 15 quid we should snap him up..
from redcafs very own news article..

"2 Leeds United are to offer Alan Smith a 'name your price' contract to keep him at Elland Road - and away from the prying hands of Manchester United after they were linked with a £15 move for the England player."

i know leeds are skint but thats ridiculous ;)

Heart and desire is dependent on which club you play for. Ole's got heart and desire. Keano's got heart and desire. Diego, whatever his critics say, has got heart and desire in spades, despite being a South American fancy dan.

Smith now... he's got heart and desire to play for Leeds, not Man United. He can stay where he is.

I've read Inter want Giggs and Smith for a combined £40 million, so I think its best we dont listen to these rumours.

Are they stupid? Leeds are deep in debt. Selling Smith would bring in £10-15 million, while a new contract could cost them up to £15 million (i.e. £60k/week, 5 year). In purely business terms, he's worth more in terms of pure cash than he is to the club.
Theys should be capable of replacing him for half that sum, and would save on wages too. Smith isn't worth £15 million to the club, die-hard Leeds fan or no.
