Co Adriaanse has been sacked as coach of Ajax with immediate effect, which does not really suprise me to be honest.
Ajax have not been doing brilliantly this season in the Dutch Eredivisie and despite making a good start they have not done nearly as well as expected and apparently (Could someone clarify this for me?) he has been on the verge of leaving Ajax numerous times.
A club statement said: "Ajax will try to find a replacement for the position of Co Adriaanse as soon as possible.
"The club has not made a decision about the positions of assistant-coaches Peter Boeve and Leo van Veen. Ajax will discuss the future with them in the near future." Ajax managing director, Arie van Eijden would not reveal the reason behind Adriaanse's sacking but said, "we have discovered that it would be best for Ajax to continue with a different manager. We are trying to arrange a successor as quick as possible. We are considering a number of options but haven't reached a decision yet. " Van Eijden said that the board had unanimously voted for Adriaanse's departure. He continued by saying that, "Adriaanse did not agree, but he also realised that the circumstances were already beyond discussion".
Despite coming under pressure from fans and the board, Adriaanse has repeatedly stated this season that he would not quit the Amsterdam club and would see out his contract which was set to run until 2003. <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />
Ajax, however, have won just one game in their last seven outings, but remain second in the KPN Eredivisie.
The club have scheduled a press conference for later this afternoon.
Apparently the latest here is that Leo Beenhakker, technical director for Ajax wants a manager ready for action by Saturday...
Danny Blind and Leo van Veen will take charge till the end of the season apparently (rumours?) so I am not sure how that works out.
To my amazement some reports on <a href="http://www.dailysoccer.com/article.php?Article=51477" target="_blank">Daily Soccer</a> say Marco van Basten may become an advisor for the next man
