It is not easy to make someone step into his shoes. The most likely thing to happen is that they would simply not fit.

Possibilities:

1. Ottmar Hitzfeld: Great manager. A man who has led two different sides to three CL finals and won two of those, two times casting aside Manchester United on the way. A man who enjoys the utmost respect from SAF. Has assembled a bunch of winners (until this season, though) at Bayern Munich, who are always a force to be reckoned with. Looking for credentials, this man does not lack any, surely. The only thing he may lack at this level, would be a hunger and he may prove a tad indulgent with the bunch of players here, in spite of all his professionalism.

2. Fabio Capello: All the same credentials, if not better than Hitzfeld. He may be better than Hitzfelt in terms of hunger, I feel. But, the one reason I would personally not go for him is on the lines that he will not stay long enough with us. He is a guy who stays long enough to win something. And chances are he will win something major, nothing short of the CL is my guess. But, he will not stay on 5-6 years or more to create a legacy. Capello has not stayed long at any club he has managed. We need someone who will be here to stay to have his own legacy at the club. I doubt Capello will bring this credential with him to Old Trafford.

Others will suggest David O'Leary? I am not so much in favor of him. He did good things at Leeds, but he has shown signs of immaturity as a manager.

Martin O'Neill looks a worthy candidate. But, my preference will go down to David Moyes. No credentials, you would say? Agreed. But, it has to be admitted, the man can manage resources at his disposal. He is a man of thorough character. Reminds me a lot of SAF. This little time frame he has been at Everton, he has been able to make Everton a top-half table team, with admittedly limited resources. No championships won yet. What I think should not happen is to let him win with another team first, because that would mean that we would have to finish second to that team some time. We may as well let him have his 'christening championship' at United. He is young and hungry and seems to have all the toughness required to handle a team like United. He will command respect, almost as much as a Hitzfeld or a Capello. And he will promote youth the same way as SAF. And, when he comes, if given the chance, we will have given the chance to someone who will be here at Old Trafford for the staying - 20 years maybe, if he gets lucky enough.

Other options? Backing? Criticism? All welcome...

This topic was done to death before SAF extended. Hitzfeld and Capello will be too old. O'Neill is a possibility, so are McClaren, Moyes, and Carlos.

It's one thing managing a club on limited resources like O'Neil at Leicester or Moyes at Everton, but they need to show that they can make the next step - which is to manage the superstars like Sir Alex, Hitzfeld, Capello & Wenger have...

I agree Capello will drop in, win the PL and/or the CL and move on, Hitzfeld wouldn't fit in at OT, Wenger is just a wa*ker, perhaps we should look at the likes of Iruerta (sp?), Lippi or Koeman?

Interesting thought, really. The reason, though, I would prefer a non-foreign manager would be his managerial longevity would be more likely than let's say a Koeman or Irureta or Lippi. I think more than anything else, when choosing a manager we have to choose one who will not find reason to move on, like, you agreed Capello would, and to a lesser degree the others will.

I hate to have to put it this way. But, there is something about Scotsmen managing United. Moyes may be THE NEXT ONE?

IMO Alan Curbishly is one of the younger managers who is a potential candidate besides Moyes. Charlton have done really well in recent years and Sir Alex has also recognised his talents as a manager. The board however would likely look for someone who is familiar with English football and has won something - so it will be Martin O'Neill or Sven.

We don't need managers who have already hit their peaks and want a cushy job to see them into their retirement years. I have zero confidence that Capello or Hitzfeld could do the job at this late stage of their careers. We need young, hungry managers who have yet to hit their peaks and who have excelled at their previous jobs. Again...Mclaren, Moyes, O'Neill etc.
