He stated that Denis Irwin and Raimond van der Gouw played their last match for the club. We all knew this was a done deal.

Then SAF stated Ronny Johnsen played his last match. That leaves yet another hole in United's defense. Where do they go from here?

We seem to be set to sign 17 year old Steele from Portsmouth, and with Ben Willians (is that the name?) appearing to be a good player according to reports, may we not sign a new 3rd keeper. Arsenal didn't do badly with Taylor, did they? Anyhow, we never got to the stage where we really needed that third keeper.

Irwin gone, Ronny gone, my crystal ball tells me Fergie decided to let Ronny go because Blanc is staying another season. Thats a lot of experience to lose in a moment if Laurent goes too.

A bit cruel on Johnsen, but definately a 'Fergie' decision - good for the future of Manchester United.

I'm disappointed for Ronny but the guy is so injury prone he is expensive. So thanks for everything Ronny and good luck!

Blanc must be staying though??

Ronny play his last match ... not today isn't it ? .. .he's not even in the team ...

Ronny to go ? ... really ?? I think he still able to contribute to the team IMO ... although he has injury problem but when he's fit - he's fantastic !! ... and I don think he's one expensive player to keep isn't it ...
Gosh ... we now have all our CB for the Treble Winning side gone ... Berg, Stam .. Johnson. ..

But we still have David May, at least for now, right?

Ronny's been a great servant, a bargain buy. But it's a logical move by Fergie. Ronny's not getting any younger, and his injuries have stalled him in recent years.

If we're gonna go out and buy more defenders, the board have already said, Fergie will need to sell.

Good luck to Ronny, and thanks.

Major shake up on the way it looks like ... for sure !! I think we will see quite some new faces come next season ...

On the "sell first bfore you can buy" thing .. . well we lost 3 long time servant but have got zero $ from any of them ... so this case here it won't help boasting Fergie's coffer ...

Ronny Johnsen
Honours with United
1996 F.A. Charity Shield - Winner
1997 F.A. Premier League - Winner
1997 F.A. Charity Shield - Winner
1999 F.A. Premier League - Winner
1999 F.A. Cup - Winner
1999 European Champions League - Winner
2001 F.A. Premier League - Winner

Well done Ronny and Good Luck!

I hate to see Johnsen leave, but it may be for the better. Blanc has been solid for United this season, but I think it would be wise to server ties with him too. Blanc is not getting any younger and United need speed at the back. I'm having dreams of a Nesta-Ayala partnership at back with Gazza-Micky on the flanks. United need to get younger at the back. Ayala is near 30 with a handful of top notch seasons left. Nesta is about 25 just entering his prime years. He is the best CB in the world and would make the mark in the EPL just like Stam in his first season. Send Veron back to Lazio in exchange for Nesta.

Isn't Lazio still haven't completed the payment on Jaap Stam?
Maybe we could force them to sell Nesta to us using that fact.. :D :D

I did'nt hear him say who because of a few nob head Charlton fans but I assumed he'd said Blanc, and for people that stayed right til the end like myself then also Jimmy Gunn(?) is retiring today and him and Fergie seemed quite close so thats a good red member of staff gone, good luck to em all

Doesn't Ronny want to retire ? He must be fed up to be always injured...Will another club take him, knowing he's injury prone ? :(

Thanks for everything Ronny.

I'll never forget the time Mark Hughes (Playing for Chelsea) pulled himself off the floor using Ronny's tackle. Didn't even flinch - a warrior, and a true Red.

:)

Fergie:

Finishing third

"The point is we're in the Champions League and there's a positive to take from that. Albeit that we'll have to qualify in August. But we've done that before, and we went on to have a great season. I think the endeavour and the determination next year will be very evident."

Denis Irwin

"What a fantastic buy. What a great professional, what a great man. He goes with all our prayers and best wishes to him and his family. He's been absolutely fantastic."

David Beckham

"It went on for so long, I started to wonder what was going on to be honest with you. I think David always wanted to sign and that's important. The most important person is the player."

Ronny Johnsen

"We really need consistent, regular players at the back. Ronny has unfortunately had injuries. He's a great player when he's fit and he goes with our best wishes.

"He's been a good servant, he's achieved a lot, he didn't cost us very much, only £1.4 million, and we hope he does well."

Raimond van der Gouw

"He's been understudy to Peter Schmeichel and to Fabien Barthez, and he's never complained once. He's been a terrific model professional."

Laurent Blanc

"We're going to have a meeting during the week and hopefully there'll be some good news."

New goalkeeper

"We've signed a young goalkeeper, Luke Steele, from Peterborough. He's only a seventeen year-old boy but we'll give him the time he needs, he's come to the right club."

Recruitment drive

"We're going to assess things. There won't be a kneejerk reaction, obviously. We'll look at things in the cold light of day, hopefully make the right decisions and put the club back on the rail."

Wish Roney good luck. He is a good servant for the club for a long time, and if he can play consistently without injury our defence may not have been that bad.

I fully agree. There are a few posters here who harp on the fact that Johnsen is not getting any younger, a bigger case can be made for Blanc as well.

A new central defensive partnership is inevitable next season so we might as well create a whole new one which would play together for the next several years.
