Fergie in swoop for teen star | The Sun |Sport|Football

MANCHESTER UNITED have wrapped up a deal to sign 17-year-old Welsh wonder Adam Matthews.
Alex Ferguson's champions have nipped in ahead of Arsenal to take the Cardiff defender to Old Trafford.

Matthews, who has made 12 Championship starts for the Bluebirds, will complete his move when the transfer window opens in January.

United will stump up £5million with further payments to follow as the Swansea-born player progresses through their ranks.

Never heard of, nor seen, this bloke play. Would be a decent wedge to spend on a very untried 17 year old. Anyone have any thoughts on the guy?

I also wonder if this is true at all.

Hmmm... The last time we allegedly nipped in ahead of Arsenal to sign a 17 year old from Cardiff it didn't end well at all.

What made that worse was the official site trumpeting the news of the deal like is was done and dusted, when in fact we'd only agreed a fee with Cardiff.

hmm.. there is no way it'll be on the club site unless he has signed a contract .. ie , if we are interested at all

Yep. I heard Arsenal were in for this lad, but that's all, it's news to me that we were interested, nevermind actually agreeing a deal. £5M+ addons is MORE than the price we agreed for Ramsey also, and he was exceptionally highly rated... so it's funny I never heard of this lad.

Also, seems to be something in the Dodo signing too, looks like that's happening afterall. That's an aweful lot of young defenders we have signed in the last 12 months.

Fornasier (CB/LB), McGinty (CB), Massacci (RB), Matthews? (RB), Dodo? (LB/CB)

None of them are actually English either.

I think that's the wrong way round, the site stated that we had agreed a fee but people (on here) assumed that meant it was done and dusted and then promptly went on to blame the official site.

my mate is a cardiff fan, he raves about adam matthews as the next chris gunter. Its belrone Jerome from Rhyl who we should be looking at, brother of Cameron.

I'm from Cardiff. The Cardiff fans don't shut up about him. They reckon he's bigger a prospect than Ramsey was when he was with them.

Looks like he plays at right back.

I just knew Matthews was class the first time I saw him – McNaughton

Nov 21 2009 by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo

KEVIN McNaughton is ready to fight it out with young Wales star in the making Adam Matthews for Cardiff City’s right-back spot.

Scottish international McNaughton makes his first appearance of the season today when the Bluebirds play Barnsley in Yorkshire.

He has put ankle and calf problems behind him, but admits: “It’s going to be a big selection battle in the future.”

Teenager Matthews is ruled out at Barnsley after being injured playing for Wales Under-21s in Bosnia in midweek. But McNaughton knows that when Matthews returns, he will stake an immediate claim to regain the right back berth.

Dave Jones would have the option of switching McNaughton to the left flank, but he does like Mark Kennedy’s experience and cool head.

McNaughton said:“Adam is different class – and I knew that when I first saw him in training last season.

“He has a cool head and the attributes needed. Adam is one for the future, no doubt about that.

“He has everything needed to succeed. He has such composure, bags of it, and you can’t teach young players that.

“Adam isn’t fazed by anything or anybody. No matter how dangerous his opponent
.

Seems the Welsh team in 5 years time is going to actually try and get to the World Cup. Some classy young lads coming up. Stay tuned!

Judging by his name, I don't think he's a very good player.

Cardiff City chairman Peter Risdale has confirmed that Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal FC are both interested in signing Bluebirds youngster Adam Mathews.

The 18-year-old Welshman is one of the brightest young talents in the country and was the recent recipient of the Championship Apprentice of the Year award. The Wales Under-21 star has made 27 league appearances for Dave Jones’ side, and Cardiff City chairman Risdale suggested his form has not gone unnoticed by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsenal FC’s Arsene Wenger.

The Cardiff City defender was rumoured to be on the radar of Manchester United and Arsenal FC during the January transfer window with reports purporting of a £4 million move, however such is the starlet’s promise, the play-off chasing Championship side are likely to push for higher terms, even though Risdale suggested they wanted to retain the player.

Ridsdale told FourFourTwo.com: “We’ve had two or three enquiries and I know Manchester United and Arsenal are in for the lad,"

"But there is no agreement with any club, verbal or otherwise. We want Adam to stay with Cardiff and that’s what we are hoping will happen.”

"Our aim is to strengthen the squad. We don’t want to let any key players go."

No, Drifter mate, I have to refer you to the OP which states that United have "wrapped up a deal" for the lad. It's come from the Sun. It's in tablets of stone.

He will be sold to pay off the tax bill hanging over Cardiff head at the moment.

If Sir Alex sees a space for him, then lets get him in before he follows Ramsey and Bale as young Welsh prospects who went elsewhere.

Don't know why we would sign him, we already have a huge talent in Rafael there playing at right back.

Is our new young Belgian player, also a right-back.? How many do we need for that position..

Celtic have confirmed they have agreed a pre-contract deal to sign Cardiff defender Adam Matthews in the summer.

Matthews will join the Scottish giants on a four-year deal in July after his contract at Cardiff expires.

The highly-rated 19-year-old has been linked with a move to Celtic for some time with Bhoys boss Neil Lennon a big admirer of the full-back.

A club statement read: "Celtic are delighted to announce that they've signed defender Adam Matthews on a pre-contract agreement.

"The 19-year-old, who currently plays for Cardiff City, is one of the most exciting young prospects in the Championship, and it's a real coup for the club to have secured his signing.

"Matthews, a Wales Under-21 internationalist, will join the Hoops on July 1 on a four-year contract, and will link up with his former Cardiff City team-mate and fellow Welshman, Joe Ledley, who has proved to be a great signing for the club already this season."

Matthews is the second player to agree a pre-contract at Celtic for next season after securing a deal for Nottingham Forest centre-half Kelvin Wilson.

It all went very quiet on him over the last year or so. Supposed to be very highly rated, and moving to Scotland might allow him to play regular football and get games in the CL.

Celtic are doing some smart business under Lennon.
