Whoever won the game
Xabi Alonso's success at Bayer could have been foretold in the way he read the game as an active player. Same with Zidane.

Which active footballers do you reckon will go on to become the best managers down the line?

Gundogan, Odegaard, Van Dijk, Di Lorenzo, Busquets, Raul Albiol, Koulibaly, Lewis Dunk, Seamus Coleman

No it couldn't. Otherwise you'd have to explain why Scholes and Pirlo are crap managers.

I guess there are other skills at play, such as communication.

Xabi Alonso always struck me as a potential manager though.

Rodri, Gundogan, Herrera

When he was here I thought Herrera has the makings of a future coach, good on pitch intelligence, talked the talk.

Agreed, reminds me a bit of Arteta in his playing days

It's impossible to tell, on paper Lampard should have been a top manager (or at the very least a solid one) and even now when I listen to him talk about the game I scratch my head at how he makes so many amateur mistakes while on the dugout.

I think there are just too many variables that you don't see on the pitch as a player that would go in to making a good manager to be able to even guess. I think most people would have expected Vieira and Keane to end up as top managers with their leadership skills, and one ended up bang average and the other worse.

Lothar Matthäus was another with absolutely everything you'd have thought you'd want in a potential manager. Couldn't manage his way out of a paper bag.

Casemiro
Gundogan
Varane
Jordan Henderson - even if he couldn't predict living in the desert was going to be warm

Matthäus is dumb as a rock. That’s not ideal for a manager.

Ryan Giggs.

In all seriousness i thought Gerrard would be a good manager and he turned out to be terrible.

Gundogan is one of those rare situations where I'd actually be surprised if he didn't become an elite level one. Very good tactically, great with people, incredibly intelligent and a good speaker. Played under both Klopp and Pep. But most of this would be true for someone like Lahm as well and he has shown no interest in managing so who knows.

Rodri is another

Ødegaard already talks like one, and his dad is a decent coach (at his level)

Koke at Atletico might be a shout, Thiago Silva seems to be coaching the Chelsea backline as the game goes on already every time I see him

Slightly off topic considering he doesn't play anymore but I always saw Gareth Barry becoming a manager. Just looked the part, coupled with his demeanor and the position and way he played the game that has produced a lot of good managers. But like Lahm, doesn't seem to be interested.

So is Scholes, but from watching them play, their 'football intelligence' was off the charts. That's part of why I think it's very hard to guess who will make a good manager from their playing careers.

You should be looking for players who got/get by on their wits who are more unathletic than not who makes few mistakes and comfortably glide through gameswho play in the heart of midfield or step out of a backline and control with ease. DM’s, DLP’s, playmaking CB’s first and foremost and then fanning out to CM’s and AM’s.

Busquets, Rodri, Jorginho etc.

What’s the point of citing Scholes when he never dipped his toes in management to prove or disprove anything?

Modric
Van Dijk
Muller
Milner
Christiano Ronaldo

Busquets is the next one I think. Ridiculously intelligent player. I can easily see him doing well as a manager.
