United v Newcastle U18s - O'Hara, Grimshaw, Blackett, Ioannou, McCullough, Rudge, Barmby, Rothwell, Pearson, Wilson, Van Velzen.

United v Newcastle U18s subs - Byrne, Harrison, Wilkinson, Fletcher
Great news that Rothwell is back!
Any idea who this Harrison on the bench might be?

Kieran O'Hara and Ashley Fletcher are U16-players aren't they ?

Indeed. Could be an important player in the semis if his fitness is up to scratch by then.

I doubt it - first, there probably isn't enough time considering how long he has been out - and even if he regains his fitness by then - we simply weren't big and strong enough to match Chelsea at home. And we will need a lot more than just Rothwell to turn that around.

It's probably 1 year too early for this bunch

I'm not saying we'll go into the tie as favorites with him in the side, but - given that he's our best cm - he'll improve our chances.

Agree. Now if Januzaj also returns, that could really make things interesting.

thanks all who sent me links

1-1 from a free-kick. This happened to be a good set piece but it seems to me that at least half the goals I've seen United conceded at this level recently have been from set pieces.

2-1 United. Very similar to the first, Van Velzen with good work down the left followed by a cut back and Rudge on hand to finish this time.

Bit of info on 2 recent signings who should be playing for the u-18s next year from Mr. Mujac on Twitter

Andreas Pereira featured for 16's friendly this morning v Tranmere...Yussif Adam played in midweek...two recent signings in action...

we need a win today to boost confidence at least...so important to hold on to this

Pearson looks a good young talent. Did well against chelsea and today carried on that form. One to watch out for. Newcastle were unlucky I think but overall some very good individual performances.

2-1 FT. Byrne won a penalty in added time which Rothwell had saved. United under pressure at times in the second half but considering some of the losses and draws in the run of games without a win I think we deserve the win.

Impressed with Ioannou and McCullough at the back. Thought Blackett was impressive and Van Velzen had one of his better games in a while. Good team performance all round really, only worry is every set piece I thought we looked suspect and while O'Hara had a relatively good debut he looked to punch every ball rather than gather it.

He was good. Gangly at times but set up both goals with good wing play and measured passes for players to slot home. He's still raw but he's improving. The second half, was less influential and newcastle did well.

Kieran Harrison, U15/16 keeper

What is going on with the keeper situation? We've must have played at least 5 different keepers this season.

Was just about to ask that, we have 4 'keepers at this level but for some reason had two u-16's in the squad yesterday. I know Coll is gone to that Dallas cup thing but anyone hear anything about the rest?

Suspect Jacob might leave in the summer and Sutherland or Gollini might be needed in the reserves from time to time next season so makes sense to give O'Hara a game now. Pretty common to give future scholars games towards the end of seasons.

Might be some injuries involved as well, although Sutherland was fine and warmed up with the other two yesterday.

wouldn't mind Coddington coming over from 'Boro full-time, considering his stint in Brazil.
