A substandard bag of meat and bones.
A slightly understrength side gives a few of the fringe players a chance to impress and take on additional resposibility:

United line up. Johnstone. Massacci. Mcginty. Thorpe. Fornasier. Charni. Lawrence. Cole. Van Velzen. Lingard. Blackett

Subs. M. Keane. Jacob. Barmby

For those interested, Blackett is playing wide left, Charni and Cole in the middle, Lawrence right and Lingard playing behind Van Velzen.

No real chances of note as yet, just a couple of long rangers from Van Velzen and Henshall from City over the bar.

Lingard tests their keeper from just outside the area after good work from Blackett but fails to get enough power on it to test the keeper. Good spell for United after City started the game better.

What do you make of fornasier datura? He was highly rated at fiorentina but it's always hard to judge defenders in academy games on tv.

I quite like him, he's a typical Italian defender in that he likes to get very tight to the forward and give him no space to operate in. Him and Thorpe are a decent combination at the back.

Just as I type that he makes a very important sliding interception in the box to prevent the two City strikers from combining.

City on top at the moment.

Lingard fires narrowly wide on the volley from a Blackett cross. Unlucky. Good game at the moment, a far better performance from United then expected without a striker (Keane and Cofie injured) and 2 full backs in midfield!

Cheers mate.

Van Velzen test the keeper with a powerful shot after being played in by Lingard. They've caused City quite a few problems.

3-0! Cole with a deflected shot following a clearance from a corner. A bit of luck as the strike was going wide.

3-0 ht, a far better performance then I think anyone could expect missing so many key players and no strikers. It's unfair to pick out individuals as all have played very well so far, although the scoreline is slightly flattering as City have had a few good chances also.

Lawrence forces a good save from their keeper after a great run from Van Velzen, then it's 4-0 as Cole scores a great individual goal to cap a fantastic performance from him so far in a central position.

Was just about to ask everyone what they make of Larnell Cole cos he always catches the eye when I watch the Academy, and then he scores a goal like that!

He's a good little player, far more effective in centre mid with his quick feet and touch play then out wide. His physique will be an issue as he moves up the ranks though.

There is something about Barmby that makes me think of Waddle. Good left foot, excellent skills and very little speed :)

5-0 Lawrence finishes off a flowing move from left to right at the second opportunity.

Another player who's had a very good game.

Sub. M Keane for Van Velzen. Lingard moves up front with Cole pushed up behind him with Keane going into c mid.
