ABU perception of United

I was listening to the 'sports zone' with Richard K on Talksport yesterday, and it amazed me how selective the ABU's are with their memories.

They all cited the D'Urso incident from 3 seasons ago versus 'boro as an example of United 'getting away with massive dissent'

Funny how I remember an incident from an away match at 'boro when Quinton Fortune put us 4-2 up and all the 'boro players thought he was off-side.

They then all swarmed angrily around the linesman and hurled abuse at him from close range.

The TV replays showed that Fortune was about 3 yards onside and that the linesman had in fact got it spot on.

The commentator for Sky remarked that the scenes were reminiscent of the D'urso incident.

Did Middlesborough face any vitriol from the media?

Did they bollocks.

The FA is biased towards United says the ABU's.

'Keane only gets 5 matches for nearly killing poor Alfie'

Keane actually will serve 8 matches if you include the first ban 2 years ago.

What about Henry's elbow against Charlton?
If anything, you could argue that the FA are lenient towards United AND Arsenal as Bex was cleared of an 'elbow' in the same weekend.

Last season, Henry did a 2 footed lunge on an opposingplayer in the last 10 minutes of the Everton away match. Result: yellow card. No media hysteria.

Steven Gerrard did one of the worst attempted 2 footers I've ever seen against Veron last season in the PL game at Anfield. Result: Referee tells Gerrard to calm down. FA action = feck all. Media reaction:= zero.

Barthez successfully puts off Steed Malbranque with a bit of gamesmanship.

Result = Booking. Media reaction:= Barthez is a cheat and a bounder etc.

Basically, I'm arguing that it's still fashionable to jump on the Anti United hate-wagon even though we are no longer 'the best team ever ever ever' like Arsenal were a few days ago, and Liverpool are now apparently.

What do you guys think? Any more examples of other teams getting away with the things United are constantly accused of?

i notice you conveniently forget about beckham's elbow against leeds on the same day when citing henry.

you're only beginning to notice being punished for things now 'cos you got away with them for so very long. . .

No probs.

My point is probably slightly reactive and pro United, but I think the gist of it is balanced. I am only trying to point out the hypocracy and paranoia of other clubs' fans saying that United players get away with everything when refering to Vieira getting a two match ban.

A 2 match ban, which he has received for breaking the rules.

All players swear at referees, but PV has been reported for it. You could argue that maybe more refs should follow D'urso's example in order to try and stamp this out. Or you could say, 'it's an adult game, where passions run high and street language is prevalent, so we have to accept it' (this is my opinion too. I play Sunday football. I don't swear at refs, but can see why others do so.)

Or you could say 'ManYoo are sooooo lucky and favored by the FA 'n' refs innit?'

;)

Thought gerrards tackle on boateng was way worse than his one on veron. But its all part of the game really and the reason why other teams arent really punished severly is because there isnt as much coverage of there games. If boro players bet the ref senseless only a few diehard fans would probably see!!!! United are in the spotlight constantly and the players have to watch every move or the press will hammer them and call for the FA to do something!

I think that Utd players have the tendancy to make things look worse then they really are. Or make them looking even worse then they already are.

For instance: Yes, Gerrard's tackle on Veron was over the top. But SG doesn't then stand over an injured player hurling abuse at him. (as Keane did). Or as I remember Stam doing against a Chelsea player.

Why? GH has talked some sense into them. 'When you make a foul, walk away and don't make matters worse'. SAF on the other hand has instilled a kind of 'if they whistle anything against us, they're an ABU bastard' into your players minds, which has made them loose the plot regularly. Either alone or in group.

This has obviously angered referees and the FA over time. They're only human.

TRM.

Totally agree! But this is only the latest in a series of biased phone ins he has held in recent weeks.
He is the public face of ABU

No one has mentioned the murder A Shearer has gotten away with eg kicking N Lennon on the head etc

Is there anybody can tell me the full name of "ABU"?
Thanks :p

Anything but! :p

Refs seem to make up for mistakes though don't you think?

Penalty against Spurs and second "goal" ruled offside against Leverkusen spring to mind this season.

ABUs only see the mistakes though.

Have also noticed twice this season that Arsenal have benefited from ref decisions which have reduced the opposition to 10 men, allowing them to clean up the points, only for the ref to rescind one of the cards AFTER the game.
