Fergie to pay £10m for a new van
Daniel Van Buyten will become a Manchester United player in the summer. The defender's French club Olympique Marseille have privately agreed an undisclosed fee with the Premiership title-chasers believed to be in the region of £10million. Sir Alex Ferguson initially moved for the Belgian international during the January transfer window to stave off growing interest in the 24-year-old. But in seeking assurances that Van Buyten would eventually complete a move to Old Trafford in the summer, United agreed to maintain a vigilant silence amid growing speculation about the player's future. In capturing Van Buyten, United have seen off stiff competition from home and abroad. Newcastle and Arsenal had watched the defender at close quarters, while Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan and European champions Real Madrid were also widely tipped to move in for the Belgian star.

Yes, he's very good and made for the English game I think. :D

This is why I put posed it as question in the topic header. I don't know too much about him and do we need another defender? I have a feeling we are going to see some other moves over the summer by SAF. The transfer window for whatever reason, did not give the team the striker they need. Have a feeling that people are more willing to move during the summer because contracts are up and they are free to move without much restriction

y another centre back ,we dont need him ! he wont be first team especially with RIO , WES and JOS <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

Yes, but we also have Gary and Silvestre who can (prefer to) play centre back and Escudé supposedly on the way in as a wing back, so I think your reaction to Schaffers' comment is too harsh.

IF you check up on our defense, here are the men, who would be there next season:

Gary Neville (RB/occasional CB)
Rio Ferdinand (CB)
Wes Brown (CB/occasional RB)
John O'Shea (CB/RB/LB, what versatility!!)
Mikael Silvestre (CB/LB)
Philip Neville (LB/RB)

Choosing 4 of 6 is not necessarily the best situation. The defenders are a species who tend to take up injuries with the tackling they do. Moreover, with the number of games we need to deal with, we need effective cover for a rotation system. Laurent Blanc was an integral part of this system this year, until we got our defenders fit. If one or more of them gets injured (God forbid) Laurent Blanc automatically will be thrown in the foray.

It is, thus, important we have capable cover. And Van Buyten is part of that puzzle at Manchester United, with the anticipated exit of Laurent Blanc.

but to pay 10m for a 3rd choice cb would be nuts not that it won't happen but it seems high. cover across the back should be less expensive.

He's not third choice, from what I have heard. He will right up there in the pecking order with Rio and Wes. They will have to compete for their places.

Obviously coming new will make Van Buyten a little lower. He will come up though. I have heard nothing short of raving reviews of this guy.

Maybe we do need a fourth centre back but if we are paying £10m for him he must be good so It will be hard to keep 4 top players happly when there is two centre back postions.

True, and that's where rotation comes in. We can anticipate long gruelling seasons ahead and we need resources for those.

and O'shea hardly comes into the equation since he is always covering both Mickey and Gary....

Then why pay 10-20 million for a 4th striker to compete with the other 3? Because the team needs depth with all the games scheduled and injuries that will occur. Having a fourth CB would allow for Wes to play RB more often, giving Gazza a rest here and there or cover for injury.

He's not third choice

he will be 3rd or 4th choice and to spend that kind of money is foolish.

He's a very good player, with bags of potential still yet to reach @ a bigger club, such as us... but I don't think that in the current climate we need to spend £10m ona centre back and to honest if I had to pick a replacement for Blanc at that sort of price range, I would not pick Van Buyten, i'd rather have Mexes!

Why Mexes over Van Buyten?

I don't think he is being sought after to come and be a standby, he is a type of defender we currently don't have i.e. a stopper, all the players we have available at CH are ball players eg O Shea, Brown, Blanc, Rio which is fine when they are paired with an out and out stopper. Australia's goal against England perfectly highlighted this point, Rio hussled of the ball by Kewell.

we don't have a strike partner for ruud either. - so spend 10m on a cb - for which we will not have a spot seems nuts. is he better than what MU have in place? like MS/Rio/Wes/John. i would hope so for that amount of money.

or Van Bommel wouldn't be bad either. If Utd. are going to spend 10mon van Buyten, they should rather buy Chivu - he supposedly has a buy-out clause of 12m and would be first choice with Ferdinand.
