HAMANN

One of Liverpools most influential midfielders and best signing during the Houlier era.One of the most under-rated players in the PL.Known for his reliability and consistency. A quality defensive midfielder who can not only interrupt the opposition attack but also had a very good range of passing himself. Won the CL with Pool and Capped 60 times for Germany.

I think those of you'all who have seen him play many times will admit he was real quality.

BALLACK

Arguably the best box-to-box midfielder of the last decade. An absolute machine and midfielder who could do everything possible.
Known for his Passing ,Agility, Shooting, Quickness, Strength, Ability in air, Attitude. So basically everything. Had an eye for those killer through balls too and a very good goal scoring record. 42 in 90 for Germany and a similar record for the clubs in his pick.

Was my favorite midfielder before he joined Chelsea.

UEFA Midfielder of the Year 2002.
3 times German player of the Year
Named 2 times each in the World Cup and Euro's Team of the year respectively.

LITMANEN

The greatest player Finland has ever produced and arguably one of the best players ever during his peak at Ajax ( the 90's decade).

9 times Finish player of the Year, Voted 3rd best in Europe in 1995, and the Dutch player of the year and top-scorer in 1993.

One of the best players Ajax ever had, Litmanen had almost no weaknesses. Known for his touch, technique, skills, passing and scoring. In his prime at Ajax he was almost as good as the great players named of the last century.

Sub: Freddie Ljunberg

Tactics: Scholes is my best player and has been given a more free role to do what he wants. He starts off behind the strikers but can drop deeper when needed to control the midfield, make trademark late runs into the box, thread through balls to the strikers or unleash a piledriver. Scholes at his peak was capable of doing it all and was box to box. Butt is required to have defensive discipline and is responsible for disrupting the opposition's midfield link man. Okocha has the underrated ability to run with the ball from midfield and beat players. Gattuoso will provide the legs and constant closing down. Both full backs are capable of providing width and quality crosses. Cole and Yorke, do what they do best - combination play and getting on the end of things.

Brad Friedel: Safe and reliable on a normal day, unbeatable on his best days (usually against United). A fantastic last line of defense.

Albert Ferrer: Represented Barcelona for almost a decade. Part of the famous Barcelona dream team that won 5 league titles and the European Cup, amongnst others. Was a pacy, tough tackling full back who could get forward.

Marek Jankulovski: Champions League and Serie A winner with over 100 caps for Ac Milan. A fantastic left foot and a quality crosser of the ball.

Sol Campbell: Quality, hard defender. Made it into 3 PFA, a World Cup and a Champions League team of the year.

Ivan Cordoba: One of the quickest defenders around to compliment Campbell's strength. Over 300 caps for Inter and has won it all.

Nicky Butt: An often underrated component of the hugely successful United team of the 90s. Its his job to disrupt the opposition link man and protect the back 4.

Paul Scholes: Ginger Prince. Legend. Has the playmaker role here and can play off the front two or drop deeper if the midfield needs help. A huge goal threat from midfield.

Gennaro Gattuso: Fierce, hard working and a born winner. He has played in this position numerous times for Milan. Will never stop running and make that side of midfield his own.

Jay Jay Okocha: Magical at his best and a joy to watch. Has the underrated ability to run with the ball from midfield and beat his man. Could cause all sorts of trouble. Set piece specialist.

Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke: The telepathic, unstoppable partnership that won United the treble will be leading the line with Scholes and Okocha threading through balls for them and Jankulovski and Ferrer swinging in crosses. Defenders beware.

Freddy Ljunberg (SUB): Fantastic, pacy option to bring on when the opposition is tiring.

This is my starting formation for the game not the previous one.

With Di Natale as the sub.

Ballack , Hamann and Albelda in midfield with Ballack as the enforcer and furthest forward. Hamann and Albelda will stay back around the centre mostly with Hamann spraying the passes and Albelda as a tough tackler to break up any play by the opposition.

Litmanen and Wiltord on wings who will cut back in whenever needed.

Cold Boy for me, although not sure about Litmanen out right ahead of Di Natale. Very solid team across the board though.

It's a real shame kps has Yorke and Cole but no width, bloody waste that. Unfortunate for Scholesy :(

I'm not convinced about Cold Boy's width insofar as I don't recall Litmamen being adept on the right, while Wiltord would tend to cut inside from that position. His midfield trio is very imposing though.

Was expecting Cold Boy to go with his previously used formation. Will be changing tactics.

Think CB has a better back 4 also.

I think my back four is better man for man except for Stam.

Don't think Cold Boy has any width either. Wiltord and Litmanen aren't wingers. I reckon Jankulovski and Ferrer are much better going forward than his full backs.

Actually, it is his fullbacks I rate higher myself, not that much the central three (I would want his against your strikers and yours against his!).

Cold Boy's width is somewhat artificial, agreed, it is just that in your case lacking width is criminal, not so much in his.

Really? You think Lauren is better than Ferrer?

Really? You think Lauren is better than Ferrer?

As a pair, not as individuals. Although Lauren was actually quite impressive at one point, no idea what happened to him... replaced by caf favourite Eboue . Flash in the pan type situation or maybe he was never that good to begin with...

Still, Ferrer didn't have as good a left peg:

Brwned's still not online so I'll just post the updated formation here.

Actually on refelection, theres probably not much in it. I suppose theres not much between Ferrer and Abidal, Jankulovski and Lauren, and Cordoba and Materazzi. I'd have Stam over Campbell but theres no doubt Campbell was a class player on his day too.

Edit: Your revised team has a much better balance in midfield. I would now rate the teams very similar, however have already voted :nervous:

Dunno about that. I still think Jankulovksi and Ferrer are better than Cold Boy's fullbacks. Much more pedigree and class about them for me.

Wenger turned Lauren into a right back. He never actually was one. He was a central midfielder before that and after the invincible season he got pegged down and was often used as right midfielder. I'd have Ferrer over Lauren definitely, Abidal over Jankulovski, Stam is the best defender but Campbell and Corboba are 2nd and 3rd so the defense is about even for me.

If I were CB I'd switch Wiltord and Litmanen. Wiltord is one of the most one footed players I've seen. He won't be touching the ball with his right much. And he isn't a winger like Valencia so that's why he used to play on the right where he cut in.
Litmanen isn't a winger either so if he cuts in as well, and he would drift in, it would be better to have him on the right. He's mainly a 2nd striker but CB already has Shevchenko and Ballack who are both top class. He'd probably be better with Di Natale instead but then again Di Natale only really triumphed in the striker role so he wouldn't either be used in his optimal role. The left is therefor a problem for both teams really.

I like the teams. They're missing a tad in their balance for my width but I feel 88's change to a 442 is good and it can work easily with either Gattuso or Butt next to Scholes. It's very close and for me the vote will be based on gut feeling since I find them very even.

Wenger turned Lauren into a right back. He never actually was one.

That's what made him look so good. Wenger brought him from Mallorca (?) where he was a midfielder and replaced a traditional fullback (Dixon) with someone with the skill and all-round play to be much more positive. Likewise on the left. It worked very well for them in what was a very positive team.

With Okocha on the left (more likely to drift centrally really) I fully expect Lauren to have a good game here, while Ferrer has Wiltord to deal with before he can contribute in attack. It's not a matter of whether Lauren is better than Ferrer, it's a case of this game being perfect for Lauren while Ferrer will not find it as easy to make an impact going forward.

Even after Kps88's change of formation, I think my midfield is very imposing and hard working. Ballack , Albelda and Hamann are all hard workers who will run around a lot and would harass any midfield that comes up against. So the midfield of Scholes and Gattuso is good with due respect but still might lose out against Ballack, Hamann and Albelda.

Plus I know Wiltord,Di Natale and Litmanen are not examples of perfect out and out wingers but they are pretty accustomed to playing wide and have the quality.

Also Lauren at the point (in his peak if not through out his career) was very very good at RB for Arsenal best in the league along with Gary.
