Team Duffy

GOALKEEPER
In between the sticks is Bats, his description speaks for itself, European Championship winner with France. He is this teams "Guardian".

------------------------------------------------------------------------

DEFENCE
It's no conincidence that my defence is made up of 2 half, both half have won the European Cup together. The right hand side of Liverpools 1984 European Cup winning defence, Phil Neal and Mark Lawrenson, and the left hand side of Juventus' 1985 European cup winning Defence, Sergio Brio and Antonio Cabrini.

The stability of Lawrenson and Brio in the centre allows Neal and Cabrini the room to get forward and support the wingers. The one thing my defence has that no other defense in the competition can boast it a proven understanding. Lawrenson and Neal played together for Liverpool in 4 league winning seasons and as mentioned a European Cup winning campaign.
This is mirrored in Brio and Cabrini (also a World Cup winning left back) who also won 4 League titles in Italy together in addiction to a European Cup.
Overall the defence boasts a total of 23 League Titles, 7 European Cups and a World Cup, thats before getting into National cups, Uefa Cups and Cup Winners Cups.

A Defence Built on Understanding, Stability and Success.

MIDFIELD
In Midfield the mix of the English League's Finest, with the class of the Italians continues as Robson and Ancolotti (another 2 time European Cup winner) stand side by side in the middle. Captain Marvel is the legs of the team, the driving force such as he was for years for Man United. With Robson getting stuck in and working the opposition midfield hard, this will give time for Ancelotti to dictate the game.

Ancelotti will look to spread the play to the wide positions where Houseman (the sides 2nd World Cup Winner) and Blokhin (Former European Footballer of the Year) can look to get at the opposition defence. Houseman is very direct and pacey in approach approach, Blokhin is one of the most skilful players of his time and showed throughout his career how well he plays coming in from the left. The dribbling ability of both Blokhin and Houseman is enough to baffle any defender and provide plenty of chances for the teams Strikers.

STRIKERS
The frontline is lead by former European Footballer of the Year (winning it on 2 seperate Occasions) Kevin Keegan, and starting his first game of the tournament is Portugese goal machine Rui Jordao. With over 500 career goals between them there is plenty of goals in this team. Keegan showed throughout his career how well he works in a 2 man frontline and how well he drops off in order to create chances. With chances being created left right and centre, Jordao is the man to be putting the chances away and the wingers will be instructed to be aiming balls into the Portugese.
A born goal scorer, he is strong, pacey, skillful and has a hitman like accuracy when finishing.

OVERALL
Throughout the team you have the balance of toughness (Neal, Brio, Blokhin) creativity (Cabrini, Chalana, Ancelotti, Houseman) and determination (Keegan, Lawrenson, Robson) to beat any side.

Tactics:
The 6ft-plus backline pack plenty of physical punch with three of the four famed for their defensive intelligence. Their comfort on the ball, combined with the passing range and vision of the midfield trio should ensure control of the game - providing plenty of ammunition for the marauding and direct four of Platini, Cha, Rep and Elkjaer.

Indeed. Making some effort to generate some interest here, as much as I admire the purity of Duffy's 4-4-2, it does leave Platini roaming a bit too free. If Robson decides to pick him up, Souness and Brady will stroll midfield.

Elkjaer and Rep will give that left side of his defence mayhem, Cabrini'll just be taken out of the game in an attacking sense and he's getting no help from Blokhin. Outplayed in midfield as well, Duffy's only hope is skipping out the midfield and knocking it up to Keegan for Jordao to pick up the scraps...doesn't look good. Also in Bats he has the biggest liability in the draft.

I can't see Duffy coping with that front four. He has too many players isolated upfront for the amount of ball he will get and none of his front four contribute much by way of tracking back.

I do rate Bats though, he was one of the top keepers in 86 until that semifinal feckup.
