As someone who was standing in the old Kippax stand dodging the coins the Divs were hurling at us while our team (which included Bruce, Pally, Robbo, Hughes and a few other ledgends) went down to a bunch of no-marks I think it's clear that while things today look bad they are not as bad as on that dire Saturday.

Back in 1989 we had won nothing - Sexton and Fatkinson had come and gone and Fergie looked like joining them. We had spent what was considred a fortune at the time rebuilding the team with a bunch of high priced failures. And yes our team (with the exception of Hughes) showed absolutley no guts that day. Living in Rusholme surrounded by Divs and drinking every night in a true blue hovel I didn't know what to do with myself - the chants of "will you ever win the league" following me in my head wherever I went.

So today was shite. A poor overall display (read Scholes for Hughes) with sloppy defending and poor finishing - but my despair is still a long, long way from what it was 13 years ago. And I know from following this club through the ebbs and flows of the last 30 years that as well as those glorious spells that culminate in massive nights like Barc '99 you have to endure period like this season that lead to displays like today.

It's not fun supporting Utd. at the moment but some of the comments flying around are quite pathetic - and if you think this is bad look back a few years and read some of the old match reports and remember what it was really like to support a perennial "also-ran".

Bloody good post Oscar. I too was at that game, and many others like it, it is coming from that era that makes the last decade so enjoyable. You can't truly enjoy the good times to the full if you haven't been through some adversity IMO.

80's were bad... but the FA cup triumphs made up for it..

...robbo, whiteside, sparky, mcgrath, stapelton, 3-0 victory over barca, robbos 25 yarder against pool in the semi, the adidas kits.... not all bad ;)

89 by far.

And yes the 80's for all their shittyness had some highs - I was at the 3-0 Barca game and it's absolutely one of the very best games I ever went to. The thing was you allways got the fealing that while on our day we could beat anyone at the end of the day the FA cup was all we could ever win.

Then, by far! The supporters calling for his head was not the most pleasent thing I have seen at OT.

Hey, it's a strange place to me now. It's got big things sticking up in the air and seats and things. ;)

So what point are you guys trying to make here, cos we were once shite its okay to be shite now, and that is what we are at this minute, and don't try and hide behind all this Fergie has won this that and the other crap, cos currently it is his reason we are in this mess. And any of you guys who are going to respond with the usual 8 out of 10 titles can wise up, they are all in the past and we have savoured them, but at this moment we are a mess and fans need to wake up and stop hiding behind past achievements.

People like me do not hide, because we have seen past disasters! You are one of those who want us to win every game 5-0. And you accused me of knowing nothing about football!

Right, I want to know where you come from. Out with it! <img src="graemlins/annoyed.gif" border="0" alt="[Annoyed]" />

My point is that things may not be great but that they were far worse in the past. Nobody pretends we don't have problems - not SAF, his key players or loyal supporters like myself. I am no longer confident about this season - but I don't rule out a recovery in the league - and hope for another run in the CL. 13 years ago all I could do was hope that we beat the scousers in one of our two meetings. Nuff said I think.

I think the difference then was that we were still building, today we may be crumbling.

there's a lot of difference between a team on a rise and a team on the fall.. 5-1 veterans.. get prepared for our fall.. :( i hope this dip doesn't last.. i know we're much better and we can do much better too.. :)

You never know - back in '89 didn't seem like we were on the verge of anything other than mediocrity. I agree that the team of '99 will need to be dismantled but SAF has made it clear in the last couple of weeks that he is not happy and is prepared to make changes - in the coming months we'll see how permanent our decline is - not the next couple of weeks.

Meanwhile take a look at the determination on O'Shea's face when he came on the pitch - it's boys like him that the club will be built on in the future.
