GSTQ Tactics

1. Build-Up Play

  • Inverted Fullbacks (Krol and Neeskens): These players will tuck into the midfield during the build-up phase, creating numerical superiority in the center. They can also drop deeper to form a temporary back four when needed.
  • Centre Backs (Van Dijk and Ake): When one moves wide, the other stays central to cover. Van Bommel can drop between them to form a back three. Both are adept at starting plays from the back with their passing and composure, and they have experience in high defensive lines, allowing them to push up, compress play, and support the press effectively.

2. Midfield Control

  • Defensive Midfielder (Van Bommel): He will act as the anchor, breaking up opposition attacks and distributing the ball. He will also drop between the center backs during the build-up to provide additional cover.
  • Attacking Midfielders (Sneijder and Gullit): These players will have the freedom to roam and create. Sneijder can exploit spaces with his vision and passing, while Gullit can drive forward with his physicality and dribbling.

3. Attacking Phase

  • False 9 (Bergkamp): Bergkamp will drop deep to link play, drawing defenders out of position and creating space for the wide forwards and attacking midfielders to exploit.
  • Wide Forwards (Rensenbrink and Rep): They will cut inside to take advantage of the space created by Bergkamp. Their pace and dribbling will be key in breaking down defenses.

4. Defensive Transition

  • Pressing: Implement a high press to win the ball back quickly. The front three (Bergkamp, Rensenbrink, and Rep) will lead the press, supported by the midfielders.
  • Compact Shape: When the press is bypassed, the team should fall back into a compact shape. The inverted fullbacks will drop back to form a solid defensive line alongside the center backs.

5. Overlapping Runs

  • Inverted Fullbacks: When in possession, Krol and Neeskens can also overlap on the wings, providing width and crossing opportunities. This will also allow the wide forwards to move into more central positions.

Key Points

  • Fluidity: Emphasize the total football philosophy where players are comfortable in multiple positions and can interchange roles seamlessly.
  • Positional Awareness: Ensure players maintain their positional discipline to avoid being caught out of shape, especially during transitions.
  • Quick Passing: Encourage quick, one-touch passing to move the ball swiftly and exploit gaps in the opposition's defense.
  • Communication: Maintain constant communication between the center backs, fullbacks, and the defensive midfielder to address any gaps quickly.

Himannv Tactics

Formation: 3-4-2-1

Tactics:

The formation itself is based on Ruben Amorim's system to some extent:
  • Amoros operates as a more traditional flank hugging wingback, while Brehme cuts in more.
  • The two players behind the striker are more like AMs than wingers and look to create chances more than scoring themselves although they can venture wide on occasion.
  • The back three generally have ball playing skills although some will be more skilled at it than others. They offer a solid base with which they can progress the ball but also have enough defensive solidarity.
  • The system allow for one of the back three to sometimes venture forward and create an imbalance elsewhere, with Koeman being the most likely to do this.
  • The midfield two are both industrious with Dunga being the more defensive one and Matthaus being more attacking in general.
  • Klinsmann is a combative goalscorer up top.
The tactics are a bit different to what Amorom's team tend to do.
  • Some focus in the drafting was to pick players who somewhat know each other. I left out Ruggeri, for example, because I wanted more proven synergy between players. Bergomi, Ferri, Brehme, Matthaus, and Klinsmann all played for Inter around the same time and were part of a Scudetto winning side in a very competitive Serie A and they make up the core of my team.
  • This is a medium block and we'd look to press deeper.
  • While this team does compete for possession, it also looks for transition and counters.
  • The likes of Koeman and Matthaus ocasionally get forward while others cover and cause overloads in certain areas of the pitch.
He doesn't get picked as often so he deserves a video:

Like the design of both teams.

Hmanv's Inter / West Germany 3-5-2 remake is very much of its time. Some proven tandems in there.

Lots of complementary movement and nice use of Neeskens from GSTQ.

@Himannv How will the back three work against the F9? Does one have freedom to follow Bergkamp as he drops back. Or will you be more passive and restrict the space

It really depends on the out-of-possession scenario. If our team is mostly behind the ball, most of the pressing will be done by players ahead of them in the mid 4 and front 3, while the back three offer a defensive base, restrict space, and support where needed. If we don't have players behind the ball and we're dealing with a counter, one will step up and put pressure on the opposition ball carrier/receiver and either win the ball or slow them down until we retain our defensive shape.

With this setup, we are not easy to break down and are set up to defend well without providing much space, but we have quality on the ball as well to launch counters and challenge for possession ourselves.

GSTQ has a more flamboyant team, with Himannv looking more lethal on the counter.

Lots of discipline needed to pull off GSTQs tactics. I think he'll have the most possession, but Himan will score win a 1-0 with a goal against the flow of the game.

That makes sense

Gone Himan. He has the quality to block out GSTQ and Koeman pinging it to Littbarski or Klinsmann on the break is a serious threat on the counter.

Props to GSTQ for a tactically well thought out 11 with good fits everywhere.

Thanks mate. I think you did a great job considering the restrictions. There aren't many great defenders available in your pool so Neeskens at RB was a masterstroke.

Cheers. Great team too, but don't drop Ruggeri for Ferri going ahead.
