Prolifik Tactics

We continue with the 4-2-2-2 setup. It works because not only do we have two excellent attacking full-backs in Lahm and Maldini to provide width, but the front four of KDB, Iniesta, Messi, and Henry are all comfortable floating between wide and central areas, making them incredibly difficult to pick up. KDB will be more direct in his driving central runs to support the front two, while Iniesta frequently drifts infield to aid the build-up play. Given the insane technical quality of not only our midfield and attack but also our back four (Lahm and Scirea in particular), we should dominate possession regardless of the opposition.

Out of possession, we drop into a medium block with an intense press once the ball approaches the halfway line. KDB and Iniesta cover the flanks, while Messi, who still has a high-defensive work-rate in this phase of his career, comes inside to press the deepest opposition midfielder. Should you get past our hard-working attackers and the double-pivot of Rodri and Schweinsteiger, you then have to deal with a GOAT-level back four of Lahm-Nesta-Scirea-Maldini with Buffon behind them. When we win the ball, we have terrifying counter-attacking potential with Messi, Henry, and KDB carrying the ball forward and/or picking out the killer pass; if such an opportunity doesn't present itself immediately, we recycle possesion and keep probing until one of our creative geniuses is able generate an opening.

Not sure exactly how Himann will line up, but our defence has the individual quality to match his attack. It doesn't appear Maldini will be directly marking a winger, so he should be able come infield to assist with Gullit.

Himannv Tactics

Formation: 3-4-1-2

Tactics:
  • There's no point pressing high against a possession based team where they are good enough on the ball to beat the press so this team will stay deeper and compact.
  • There is a focus on zonal defense so that we don't get pulled out of position too much chasing after opposition players. We handle Messi zonally, but with extra focus.
  • When we do win the ball, all of my players are good enough to start attacks with quality, precision, and speed and we get the ball up quick to Diego.
  • MvB and Gullit up front are a pairing that know each other well and offer both an aerial threat and a threat on the ground as well with their skills.
  • The front two can occupy the defense and ensure they create that space for Diego to wreck them or they drop deeper and interlink with him to help unlock that defense.
  • There's no doubt our opponents have quality and synergy, but this team too was from a time when football was at it's best and these are the creme of the crop with players who have played with each other or in similar tactical systems for most part.

hman upgraded the best he could but its still not enough, pro won the lottery with being only one with Pep....

Messi against Koeman would be a masacre

Better width provider. Also, Given opponent formation, Cabrini suite your team more than Maldini.
Maldini is perfectly fine going forward though. He played wingback in a back five over several tournaments for Italy (including Euro 2000 where they made the final). It's not like I need him to be Marcelo.

Yeah pretty much this. H-man probably needed another reinforcement to equal things up.

At the end of the day two great teams.

I think it's damn close. Maybe it is a slight fatigue with prolifik team/tactics.. I also wanted to see Messi as a false 9 at some point with this personnel. It would have even more impact on Koeman and I could accept that overly emphasized point. Here though, he will often go through channels or mostly Kohler.

Will think a bit more. Or forget there is a game to vote. Something out of those two will happen.

I'd agree if we're talking about F9 Messi, but in this setup he'd have to operate more to the right. I'm not saying he will not run into Koeman, he absolutely will, but it's unlikely to be a regular thing and Koeman is unlikely to be completely isolated against him.

If Koeman were to thrive in any system in football, it'd be this one with two really good defenders on either side of him, one of whom is probably the best pure defender in the game. Koeman launching it forward to Diego or one of the front two against the run of play is an equal threat in my view.

Koeman also has Dunga and Matthaus in front of him. You have some great long passers in the side for the quick counter. Also Rodri and Bastian are brilliant but are they wouldn’t be my go to guys to stop Diego on the counter.

These are fair points, i hate how Koeman get's written off almost every game when going up against a pacey attacker, whilst he had his weaknesses, in specific systems you can mitigate them and i think you have done a great job here, those wide CB's are as good as it can get and pro doesn't have a CF that will exclusively be operating in his areas.

He has both Henry and Messi operating in those areas. Even if we discount it isn't nominally f9 Messi, although he no doubt will attack that space, there's also Henry who might be even worse fit for Koeman and has given much better defenders a torrid time like Cannavaro with his pace and directness. There's a reason why Koeman is singled out, because he wasn't very mobile or good defensively. His strengths were elsewhere and Barca were exciting team playing attacking football that scored a lot but also shipped a lot. So whilst it's indeed a narrative I wouldn't say it isn't deserved unlike Vidic who is unfairly singled out from time to time due to one game against Torres.

Great match-up this in pitting two systems against each other. Hard to imagine any real improvements to either shape in terms of personnel or fit.

Torn on the outcome. Henry is probably my favourite player of all time in stretching a back 3, as he showed in the Euro 2000 final. That said, any back 3 will typically prefer to play against a front 2 so they can operate as 2 markers and a cover.

Pro's been miles ahead of everyone in this draft, but for me Himannv's drawn level here.

Should be a really good game.

Himannv has a GOAT attack and very good wing-backs for this set-up. Prolifik on the other hand has a GOAT defense and a front-6 that can re-cycle possession for the whole day with ease. All of them were great passers and good under pressure as well. In the end, really tough to separate the teams. However, I am not a huge fan of Koeman in general. Especially against attackers with great turn of pace and close control which Messi and Henry possess in plenty. A CB like say a Rio or Virgil or Stam would have tilted the game in his favour for me.

I mean, by the same logic false 9 Messi would frequently be dropping deep where Koeman wouldn't have to deal with him. Considering we also have KDB and Lahm operating on the right, I don't think it changes the equation all that much.

The key for me though would be Messi and especially Henry making runs in behind, whether diagonally or down the channels, which is where Koeman would struggle to deal with them. We have the passers to spring them as well between Messi, Iniesta, and KDB.

Our system is quite a compact one and a back 3 is more suited to deal with your two attackers. A back 4 would have been a lot worse for us against your system, of course. With Dunga and Matthaus in front of them, I believe we have a compact defensive base. All of these players are also good on the ball and we will get our chances to counter via Diego and our front two. You have a great team, but I believe that will not be the easiest to deal with against the run of play.

Back and forth. One of those games where I feel am doing the other side a disservice voting against them, so all level for me. Well done to both of you.

Messi is the real life goat now, but in drafts, there was, is and will be only one goat, innit?
