360 Plug and Play Kit

I have one of these, and I also have a generic mains USB adaptor for charging my mp3 player. Should I be able to plug the usb form the plug and play kit into the mains adaptor and charge without using the xbox?

Mine often stays on and charges after I've switched the sexbox off.
