Epic's Fergusson: Xbox 360 'Approaching Upper End' Of Visual Potential

Talking to Gamasutra, Gears Of War 2 franchise senior producer Rod Fergusson has been discussing the Xbox 360's technological potential, suggesting that we're "certainly approaching the upper end" of what developers can do with it -- though adding that "there's room to grow" for 2010-shipping titles.

When asked about the Xbox 360's lifespan, as part of an extended Gamasutra interview, and specifically quizzed on "...where you think we are, technologically, in terms of the potential" of the Xbox 360 in this hardware generation, Fergusson commented:

"I mean, I'm not the technical guy... all I know is that with the two to three more years of optimization that we've had, we're much further along than I think, three years ago, we thought we were going to get.

So I think we're certainly approaching the upper end of it

Interesting to say the least.

Who said it was a tragedy?

It isnt, but that ginger analyst deserve his portrait being posted.

You can look at it two ways:

a) The 360 is essentially approaching the end of it's life-span

b) Real quality games will be expected just over the horizon.

Honestly I only think it's the latter, as time goes by the 360 will just have to get used to producing multi-disk games and hope that the cheap price of the console will see their sales take them through.

RedKaos you are a divvyshivel sometimes.

The fact here is that the senior producer of the most technically impressive XB360 game is saying that it's hit its limits, whilst at the same time Naughty Dog are saying that they've not even tapped 40% of the power of PS3, and that coming from the developer of the best looking game of the generation.

They haven't hit the limits yet, and admittedly this is not the "technical guy" so i doubt he has any great knowledge on the subject. Im sure there is still years left of potential in the 360. And as Elessar says, design>graphics, a flaw of the PS3.
