Well, you were fortunate with 68, I wasn't particularly interested at then. Until August 1968 I lived in Bahrain in the Middle East. I went to a boarding school in Liverpool and that's when I started supporting United seriously. We slipped very quickly and both scouse were much better than us (Everton won the league in 1970). If I didn't have those years of ridicule I wouldn't appreciate the current achievements as much.
99 was a bit of a blur. I saw it at St George Rugby League Club, United supporter's base in Sydney. There were several hundred there. The place erupted when we equalised and we cheered each time they replayed the goal. I was still dancing from the equaliser when we scored the winner. At first, I thought it was another replay. Then I thought they'd disallow it for scoring too quickly. I still can't believe the change from utter dispair to utter joy in about a minute.
Probably the best thing was that the FA Cup was a few days before and the EC started at 4.30am and was on free to air television. This meant that the glory hunters and part timers didn't turn up. Most of the crowd were former regulars. The atmosphere was great because most people were singing, especially after the game. I got told the last reds were kicked out at about 2pm because the singing was disturbing the people playing the one arm bandits.
