Thirty four years ago today we won the European Cup, the first English side to do so. 1999 was unforgettable because of the last few minutes. 1968 was unforgettable because of the previous ten years. Stepney's save from Eusebio sent the game into extra time and Georgie ripped them to pieces. Matt Busby's dream fulfilled as Duncan Edwards and the babes looked down from heaven. Was it really that long ago? Am I really that old? Yep, but thanks for the memories.

Was there. The only part I really remember well was when I nearly died when Eusebio was through on goal. Probably the greatest moment of Stepney's life. The whole match hinged on that save. Final exams next day at UNI. It was a tough choice! Memories fade. Didn't Charlton score a rare header? Denis didn't play for some reason but Kidd was in there and Georgie had a blinder. Remember these but little else. Was it all blue we played in that night? It's all a blurr.

Bobby scored from a header, Denis missed though injury and we played in all blue. I seem to know more about it than you but I was only becoming interested in football at the time.

I didn't realise the enormity of winning until later. When I did, we were struggling against relegation and it seemed like a different time although it was only a couple of years. 1993 was very sweet for supporters of my vintage because we hadn't won the league during twenty odd years of support. In those days that meant we didn't even qualify for the EC so winning was never even a possibility. How times change!

Lot of water under the bridge since then. I'd been away from Manchester for two years fully into uni life. Used to check for the scores every week but that was it. Travelled a lot and finally left England in '76. Kept in touch mainly by short wave radio.
Only told I had a ticket the night before in 68 'cos my uncle was sick and couldn't make it. My aunt came down from M/Cr and I sat with her. Strange I don't remember too much about Barca either except for the last 5 minutes and the aftermath which are etched indelibly into my being, just like the Stepney save.
We're so fortunate.

Well, you were fortunate with 68, I wasn't particularly interested at then. Until August 1968 I lived in Bahrain in the Middle East. I went to a boarding school in Liverpool and that's when I started supporting United seriously. We slipped very quickly and both scouse were much better than us (Everton won the league in 1970). If I didn't have those years of ridicule I wouldn't appreciate the current achievements as much.

99 was a bit of a blur. I saw it at St George Rugby League Club, United supporter's base in Sydney. There were several hundred there. The place erupted when we equalised and we cheered each time they replayed the goal. I was still dancing from the equaliser when we scored the winner. At first, I thought it was another replay. Then I thought they'd disallow it for scoring too quickly. I still can't believe the change from utter dispair to utter joy in about a minute.

Probably the best thing was that the FA Cup was a few days before and the EC started at 4.30am and was on free to air television. This meant that the glory hunters and part timers didn't turn up. Most of the crowd were former regulars. The atmosphere was great because most people were singing, especially after the game. I got told the last reds were kicked out at about 2pm because the singing was disturbing the people playing the one arm bandits.

The only thing I have in common with 1968 is it is my year of birth!!
