22.5M worth of language skills

Finding out that William Gallas is available at 7.5m made me wonder again wether paying 30m for Rio was the right thing to do, despite the 'english factor'.

The price difference could finance Gudjohnsen + Bridge/Finnan, which means quite a lot of money for language skills.

Comments?

right on, surely the difference in quality between the two can't be worth 22.5m :(

but the fact that we're this big now, means AF wants to flex the financial muscle, make other clubs sit up, and firmly establish us as the biggest club in the world, bit of an ego trip, really, if you ask me, but he's brought the moolah in, it's his to spend

The problem with fees is that the difference between a World-Class player and a Very-Good player on the field of play is not that great, however in terms of market value the distance is huge.

We don't need another CB for this coming season however, so it's a non talking point. We want a true full-back and another forward with Yorke on his way.

Is Zidane worth almost 40m quid more than Ballack? I think not!

I think you are overrating Rio's language skills actually. Have you heard him speak?

i agree. peckhamese is more of a foreign language than just about any other in the premiership.

bloody hell, jedi dans.......have you nothing ever nice to say about people......dark side looms large in you, young padawan.....prejudice towards others, much ill-advised it is, hmmmmm..... ;)

Gallas is in the bag..

Ruddy said so a while back and Midlandzzz mentioned something about a French player and sports management..

They'll line up in front of Carini next season.... ;)

In this case one should go for 'very good players" then...I still think that the 30m fee is a result of panic because of last season's comic defending.
But that in itself was partly to blame on last season's "world class signings".
The "very good" scholes supports his CB's much better than "world class" Veron. Not to mention that a similar defensive line won us the league the season before last, so I think the not necessary panic cost us.

There was a certain amount of pressure to buy a big name defender after last season's results, but I wouldn't exactly call Rio a panic buy. The 30m fee will seem like peanuts if he anchors our defence for a decade and ends up helping us win trophies.

It won't seem like peanuts? Its a record fee...

For that kind of money he's expected to anchor your defence

With the current rate of skyrocketing transfer fees, 30m will seem like a relatively low amount, when you consider the amount of trophies we will have won with him in the squad. At least 5 Premierships, a few FA Cups and a couple of CLs. That glory and the money from those trophies would be worth much more than what he paid for him.

What?

You've wom at least 5 titles and 2 CL's with him on the squad?

You've only won 2 CL's in your entire history..and you think you're going to double this thanks to Rio?

peanuts???
There's hardly a team in the world that 30m would not buy their entire defence...
The entire Bank of England won't stop Barthez doing his tricks or mickey being caught from time to time...
Let's hope to are back to reasonable frequency in the coming season. It might help Rio settle.

We would have won it last season if it wasn't for Beckham, Keane, and G Neville being injured. And that would have been without Rio.

;)

We're also in the midst of our most successful run in history. You won 3 European Cups in a shorter period so its certainly not out of the cards for us either.

Are you?

How do you know you haven't just finished it?

Talk about getting ahead of yourself..

You probably said that after the 97/98 season, and BOOM, the following season you were as sad as you ever could be in terms of football. ;)

Why would we have finished it. I honestly think we'll better what we did in the last decade.

eh? the market's bottomed out, raoul. . .won't be long before we're all trading players a la US sports. . .in the current market, and with leeds being knowingly skint, you paid well over the odds. . .

Is there a salary cap or transfer cap in place now ? I don't think it will happen, simply because Football is global and US Sports work within a single nation. Clubs from different countries should be allowed to all follow their own national policies. It will eventually turn into the havs and have nots but there's little that can be done about it at this stage. United are richer than any other club in the world and that's not going to change whether we win 2 or 9 league titles in the next decade. The glamour of our brand will always be #1 in marketing circles.

Getting the better of Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Bayern among others on the way to CL triumph is something you scousers never experienced.
Gone are the days of parading the EC after beating Gornik Zabrze, Dynamo Berlin, Honved Budapest and their likes over 2 legs on the way to the final.

it will change if all the other current 'major' european clubs end up skint and there's only 5 or 6 clubs with any money. . .it will have to.

it's no good being the richest club in the world if there's no-one to play against. . .

You have dominated for much of the last 10 years...

You didn't last season, do you think you're far and away the best team now?

Weirdo

Its impossible to win the league every year. There are going to be letdowns every now and then. We've lost the league on two seperate occassions and rebounded nicely to win it back. I like our chances.

Do you think you're better than the Arse?

Your speculation as to what you're going to win over the next 10 years is purely that....

If we sort out our defence of course we are. We'll just have to wait and see what impact Rio has in that department.

As is your speculation implying that we wont. At least I have the historical reference of the last 10 years on my side. ;)

that's pure subjectivity. if you had ronaldo, zidane and a cloned version of pele you'd be the best team on the planet.

if.

This entire thread, in fact 80% of the entire forum, is subjective.

Well these are all opinions aren't they. I wasn't bragging...merely stating what I think could/will happen if we continue down this path.

They'd still have a ropey defence...

;)
