Starting a thread for some gratuitous glory hunting. Two gold medals already for Ireland and two more medal prospects running in women’s 400m at 8.50pm. With various far right shit heads winning elections this week it’s particularly pleasing to see Rhasidat Adeleke leading the medals charge. Stick that in your pipe, ye wankers.

I know they have home advantage at these championships, but what the hell has happened to Italian athletics in the last few years? They’ve historically been a fairly middling country in terms of winning medals, even at the European championships. But now they’re suddenly world beaters in several events and are completely dominating the medal table in Rome. Is there any particular reason for this rapid improvement? (Also, conversely what the hell has happened to German athletics recently? It’s almost like Germany and Italy have swapped places)

Combination of the effects of becoming a multi-ethnic country plus greater focus and investments on it. Same as happened with Spain a generation or two ago

Home ground effect as well. Despite this being an Olympic year I wouldn't be surprised if some of our athletes in the disciplines where they have no chances of medal in Paris prepared to be in top form for this instead. Coupled with massive home support(adrenaline rush) + familiarity with environs

Germany's decline in track and field has been astonishing. Maybe they lack motivation with no GDR to compete against to prove a point? Lack of investment in grassroot sports?
