Ten contenders have been named on the shortlist for the 2007 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Formula One ace Lewis Hamilton, boxers Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe, plus athletes Paula Radcliffe and Christine Ohuruogu are among the contenders.

Golfer Justin Rose, motorcyclist James Toseland, tennis player Andy Murray and England rugby stars Jonny Wilkinson and Jason Robinson complete the candidates.

A public phone vote decides the winner during the show on Sunday 9 December.

Millions of viewers are set to tune in for the star-studded programme hosted by Gary Lineker, Sue Barker and Adrian Chiles.

An audience of nearly 8,000 people at the NEC in Birmingham will see a range of awards being presented at the sell-out show.

Hamilton is rated favourite by the bookmakers to win the trophy, which was lifted by world equestrian champion Zara Phillips in 2006.

Second favourite with the bookies is Hatton, who fights Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas less than 24 hours before the vote takes place.

The shortlist was drawn up by canvassing the top 10 selections of more than 30 sporting experts, including a range of newspaper editors.

Three current world champions and three runners-up are on the shortlist, with a total of seven sports represented:

#
Joe Calzaghe - Undisputed world super-middleweight boxing champion.

#
Lewis Hamilton - World championship runner-up in his rookie Formula One season.

#
Ricky Hatton - Fights Floyd Mayweather for WBC world title on eve of show.

#
Andy Murray - Broke into the world top 10 despite an injury that ruled him out of Wimbledon.

#
Christine Ohuruogu - Returned from one-year ban for missing three drugs tests to land world 400m title in Osaka.

#
Paula Radcliffe - Won the New York Marathon just 10 months after giving birth to a baby daughter.

#
Jason Robinson - Retired after playing key part in England making the Rugby World Cup final.

#
Justin Rose - Captured golf's European Order of Merit title.

#
James Toseland - Claimed the World Superbikes Championship for the second time.

#
Jonny Wilkinson - Shrugged off injury to help England to Rugby World Cup final.

For the second year running, no footballer has made the list - Northern Ireland's record-breaking striker David Healy and Scotland star James McFadden did not gain enough votes.

There will be much debate over who should win the coveted title

Frankie Dettori was among the award favourites earlier in the year, but does not feature despite his emotional Derby win on Authorized.

Joint champion jockey Seb Sanders, who shared the title with Jamie Spencer, was the 11th most popular choice in the nominations.

In addition to the main honour, there will also be several other awards, including the Top Team prize.

Other winners announced on the night and decided by judging panels will include Coach of the Year, Overseas Personality and Young Personality.

And the Sports Unsung Hero honour, supported by Robinsons, goes to a volunteer who has made a real difference to a club or team.

The BBC also gifts two special honours - lifetime achievement, and the Helen Rollason Award for achievement in the face of adversity.

If Calzaghe doesn't win this ahead of Hamilton the people of Britain should be ashamed.

feck knows who'll win this. I mean didnt Zara Phillips win it last year????

Still, I reckon Hamilton is nailed on.

If Hatton beats Mayweather then it should be out of him and Calzaghe.

But as Calzaghe once rightly put it 'I dont pay attention to this silly little award as you only ever get the loser's winning it'

And his statement will be right again if Hamilton wins it.

either of the boxers are deserving - but it does say personality and a phone vote so it'll be radcliffe or hamilton, or murray - who's got a tabloid headline counter?

Aparrently, anyone who puts money on anyone other than Hamilton is a millionnaire

The people want Calzaghe. But it's really the BBC who decide so i expect Hamilton will get it.And they really want to drop the personality part of the title.

I thought any kind of phone in have been banned at the BBC, anyway after Hatton got beat it has to be Hamilton, though Christine Ohuruogu did actually win a World championship however there too much controversy round her.
I reckon Hatton could make top 3 via the sympathy vote though.
Calzaghe wont get it as I dont think the BBC with give it to someone who is not there.

Lifetime achievement award well deserved - Sir Bobby Robson.

Not a well man these days...great servant to the game and a true gentleman.

Healy isn't nominated because he isn't British.

Northern Ireland is not in Britain, it is in the UK. The award is given out by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

No real surprise Fergie was there...him and Sir Bobby are the best of friends.

How wrong you were :wenger:

Excellent, well done Joe on a fully deserved win. Missed the start who else won apart from joe calzaghe and bobby robson?

Justice is done.Should have got it last year.If Hamilton is the real thing he'll be back next year.SAF on the BBC shocker.

SAF was there for Sir Bobby and what a man he is, the way he helped Sir Bobby back to his table and carried his award....class man

Congratulations to Calzaghe. He's had to wait far too long for U.K. wide recognition of just how good he is, let alone world wide recognition. It's a pity the American's will always kid themselves into thinking he dodged the best the division had to offer when the truth seems to be that the best the division had to offer avoided Calzaghe (none more so than Hopkins - who will probably pull out all the stops to avoid him again). At least a lot more people have now come to appreciate what is undoubtedly one of the greatest British fighters (and probably world fighters) of all time.

Give it to Hatton. Anyone who thinks they can beat Mayweather probably has quite a personality... At least enough to give me a laugh for his efforts.

i think thats wrong, i mean Darren Clarke was nominated for this thing a few years ago and actually there was a huge internet push to get a GAA man nominated last year (or the year before, cant remember)
