100 Greatest Drummers of All Time

And unless I missed him, Brann Dailor's not on the list. He should be, he's better than half the plodders on the damn thing.

I hate these lists - so many world class drummers aren't included but (shock), the top 15 consist of the drummers from The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Hendrix, Cream...as usual, it's simply the drummers from the most popular bands.

After a quick scan, 3 names I expected to see somewhere were.. (Maybe they are there, I just didn't see them)
Lars Ulrich
Nicko Mcbrain
Joey Jordison

I know Ulrich is a whiney bitch but he's still a top drummer, and definitely better than a fair few I see on that list for sure.

I'm not an expert in music by a long shot though so maybe they're correctly left off the list. But that white stripe chick being there is insane.

Also it didn't even include this guy, which makes it a proper naff list.

Phil Selway should've made the top 100.

Can't really argue with that top three, although I do prefer Moon to Bonham personally.

The Electric Mayhem's drummer is better than over 99% of drummers on that shit list. What a fecking shit list.

Good list overall though. Rolling Stone need to do a 100 greatest microphone stands list.

I play guitar and not drums, but I thought Danny Carey would've made the top 20. He's the only other drummer that made me think 'wow' other than Neil Peart and Bonham.

How does one tell the difference between a great and a good drummer?

I think this guy has to be the best there is.

This, and here's a proof:
John feckin Bonham! Love the man.
Not to say I don't love Bonzo myself, but it's just convenient to name them.

On topic, haven't seen the list yet but I'd nominate Marco Minnemann and Gavin Harrison pretty high from the current ones. Two absolute giants of the game.

Meg White would own Brann Dailor in a drum off. Think of her complex masterclass beats from 'hardest button to button' versus his pedestrian tapping on something like Iron Tusk.

The list does not lie.

I have a better idea, for those who read the whole list. Tell us your obscure best drummers off it, the ones you feel other people should really check out to broaden their horizons.

For example - I'll say Louis Bellson. Most people will be familiar with Buddy Rich from that era, but Bellson was even tastier. Even pioneered double bass drums!

Joe Morello - the great educator, so stylish and cerebral in solos.

I love those first four Metallica albums, and a fair chunk of what came after, but I wouldn't consider Ulrich a great drummer. Each time I've seen them live, he's been the weak-link. Always sloppy. He's pretty solid on record, but in a very rigid sort of way. No real flair, in a genre that is all about flair.

But the fact that probably 1000s of pretty good and pretty solid drummers (such as Ulrich) don't make the list and Meg White does is pretty funny.

I don't know the dude's name, but the guy from The Locust is one of the best drummers I've ever seen. The band's music is virtually unlistenable, but he's great.

Ginger Baker (crazy old coot that he is) was a better drummer than John Bonham. It's not even close. There are quite a few on the list who were better actually- Billy Cobham and Danny Carey for instance. Bonham was a classic thumper with some decent technical ability.

Dave Astor and Gabe Serbian.

And the list is fecking bunk, Buddy Rich not in the top 10, Travis Barker is apparently objectively a worse drummer than Ringo. Ok Rolling Stone.

I honestly wouldn't mind these lists if it was "100 drummers from bands you have heard of" but when someone like Brandon Morgan from Misery Signals won't even get a look in (or the aforementioned Locust members) it just outs it as useless from the start.

I've gone right off Ginger Baker as the years have gone by. It's probably as much down to his behaviour and attitude as his playing, but I've come to see him as more and more limited as time has gone on.
