5 or 10 years ago football wasn't normal. We had 2 goats playing at their peak at the same time.
We need to forget the heights they reached and learn to reevaluate current players differently
Spot on.
Ronaldo and Messi were absolutely historic. Scoring 50,60 goals a season in modern top level European football is completely off the scale and moves them into alien territory. Vinicius, Mbappé, Kane...this is a normal seasons Ballon d'Or discussion

Mbappe is still putting very high numbers but a lot of it is helped by playing in Ligue 1. It's clear that we need to look at this current generation of superstars differently than Messi and Ronaldo.

At the start of the millenium we had a run of weak Ballon d'or winners:
2000 - Figo
2001 - Owen
2002 - Ronaldo (this version of Ronaldo was not all time great)
2003 - Nedved
2004 - Shevchenko
I think Vinicius is at this level right now and wouldn't look out of place among these guys. It's when you compare him to the superstars that came after like Ronaldinho or before like Ronaldo (when he was in his peak version) that Vinicius looks out of place. It feels like that with Messi and C.Ronaldo gone that we are missing a megastar like we did when Ronaldo got injured at the start of the millenium. I don't think anyone is good enough to fill that spot at the moment, maybe Vinicius can be in the future but he needs to get better than he is currently.

Who the feck thinks nedved, figo and shevchenko were weak balon d'Or winners

And that Ronaldo undoubtedly led Brazil to the world cup. Even not at his peak he was class.

Wouldn’t call Figo a weak ballon D’or winner. Actually I’m struggling to see anyone weak on that list.

To be fair Messi and Ronaldo also had the privilege to play for many seasons in absolutely stacked teams. These Real and Barca were two of the best teams in history. No one from this generation is currently playing with such supporting casts.

Owen is certainly weak by Ballon d'Or-winning standards. I'd say that out of all Ballon d'Or winners only Belanov in 1986 was less impressive (and he wouldn't have won it if non-Europeans were included in the vote, like it was in the 2000's).

The rest are very much alright. Ronaldo stands out a bit (mostly because of the unflattering comparison to his own's unbelievable best), but Figo, Shevchenko & Nedved were all unbelievable talents who just had the best seasons of their illustrious careers.

Kane literally has better stats than Lewa in his first season playing in a much weaker Bayern side… Kane has been better than Mbappe last few years apart from the World Cup so I don’t really get the Mbappe is easily the best on the planet argument.

De Bruyne is also just a better footballer than Mbappe almost every week in comparison. KDB also has won a European cup and dominated Madrid last season easily.

Something Mbappe has never done.
Mbappe has won a much bigger trophy than the CL though.

Owen aside, Vinicius isn’t at their level. Not yet anyway. Nedved was

I don't know if that's true - ballon d'or was calendar year, not season so he's literally got UEFA cup, FA cup (scored both in a 2-1 win), Super Cup (scored and assisted, 3-2 win vs Bayern), Charity shield (vs us, he scored their 2nd in a 2-1 win, not that it's a big trophy but he's turning up in every big game) and League cup albeit he didn't play much in that. Then you have the Germany hattrick for England and generally being great for us in the qualy rounds. Then you add in he's playing for a pretty cack Pool team.

Imagine how much press Harry Kane would get if Spurs did the UEFA cup/FA cup/League Cup and then Super Cup & was banging them in for England. Arguably more impressive than many of the other winners when you think about it.

As I’ve said, weak by Ballon d’Or-winning standards, which is still more than impressive on its own. For a striker who didn’t do much aside from scoring goals he simply didn’t score enough (16 league goals, outscored by Viduka, Henry, Marcus fecking Stewart and Hasselbaink)— as well not playing in Europe’s top competition. He did perform very well in most of big games that season but that didn’t make him the best player in the world — he didn’t pass the eye test (which, for me, is most important), his stats were pretty average and his achievements (on their own) didn’t justify the award either.

I didn’t compare him to Belanov for nothing — he was also pretty crucial in Dynamo’s CWC-winning campaign (not so much in the league but who of the foreign voters watched that?) and scored 4 goals at World Cup, shining just at the right moment to catch public’s attention. But was he the best European player of the year (I’m not even counting Maradona)? No, and neither was Owen.

Anyway, don’t want to derail this thread any further, it’s about Vini after all.

I really don't understand this certainty about Mbappé being THE best player in the world. What exactly makes him better than De Bruyne, Vinícius Jr., Griezmann, Kane, etc? This guy is insanely overrated. I've seen many talking about him as if he were the Messi of 2009-2013 compared to everyone else(not necessarily you). He's on the same level as the other world class players at the moment.
Elite production for both club and country, huge performances in the biggest games, and people actually have eyes.

Mbappe hasn't played well in any big game since the last 10 minutes and extra time of the world cup final. He was terrible vs Bayern last season and terrible vs Barcelona this season. He has been terrible for France too. This notion that he is the BPITW without evidence is tiring.
He single-handedly eliminated Real Sociedad, and led his team out of the group stage, scored 2 against Barca.

So, Mbappe with 15 g&a (12 goals) including a hat-trick in a WC final in 2 WCs is nothing special, but Vinicius with 3 goals for his entire Brazil NT career (3 goals in 28 games) is amazing and a big game player. ok got it.. You can find bad big game performance for any player if you search enough even for Messi or Maradona.

Also comparing 77 g&a (for France) WC icon Mbappe with 7 g&a Vinicius for Brazil, and then proceeding to declare Mbappe "terrible for France" doesn't make any sense. Since the WC, he has 18 g&a for France in 11 games including 5 g&a against Netherlands in two games, so I have no idea where this "he has been terrible for France" idea comes from.

At the club level, Mbappe had already shined in big games since he was 18 whether it is against City, Real, Juve, Bayern or Barca you name it. And only a few all time greats can rival his NT career.

And this is coming from someone who really likes Vinicius and his play style, and sees him as the most appropriate Ballon D'or contender from Real if he continues to play a big role in Real's potential UCL trophy.

Feel the need to point out even the greatly diminished version of Ronaldo was still by far the best player in the world post world cup. It was by 2004 that he started letting himself go

I saw that but not sure what I was supposed to say about that. I counted his Supercup and Charity Shield performances as well.

As for the potential winner — Raul probably, maybe Kahn... But that is beside the point, which was that the winner (and, by proxy, the competition) that year was pretty underwhelming compared to other years — be it from the 00's or overall. And that would've been true for Raul or Kahn or Beckham... all of whom had great years but none that I personally would remember for years to come.

Raul and Figo come to mind. Totti as well. Kahn.
Raul was probably the closest one but it’s always been a combo of Europe/domestic and it wasn’t a great season for Real from the looks of things (not going to pretend I followed Real when I was a teenager but you went out to Toledo in the Copa, didn’t win the CL) and so he’s hardly going to get ballon d’or for winning the league (when that was very common) and just being top scorer.

Kahn maybe if voting wasn’t rigged towards attacking players but I had this debate with someone ages ago and it’s just the way it’s always been. Goals and trophies matter in the ballon dor (which is why I think it’s a bit of a joke award) and a keeper isn’t going to win it.

Because you said he scored 16 goals and was out scored by x,z and y. I doubt if you took goals per game across comps there’d be many ahead of him that year national/domestic. I feel like we also need to remember Boone was scoring at Ronaldo/Messi levels in those days.

I just disagree, if Kane did that trophy haul and was scoring in the big games he’d have a shout of winning it unless someone like Mbappe won the treble.

Answer re Raúl to other poster above.

I don't know if you understood my post, but I asked why he's better than other world class players at the moment and not why he's considered a world class player. His "elite production" for France is not that relevant right now, is it? Or did that two-penalty hat-trick put him above everyone else permanently?

His performances in big games have not been better than Vinícius'. Kane, in his first season in a scenario similar to Mbappé's at PSG, got as good numbers and none them have had a massive impact in UCL so far. There are also other players with very different functions that have not been worse than him, like Rodri, Foden, De Bruyne(was hampered by injuries, but was great in almost every game he played) and Griezmann.

Again, I'd really like to understand what exactly puts Mbappé above the others at this moment.

I just told you. Do you switch your "best player in the world" opinion every month or something? Vini and Mbappe both are often very good in big games, but Mbappe has done it for longer while being more productive year over year in general and far more effective for his country. Vini is right there for Ballon D'or shouts though without a doubt this year.

The others are a level below for reasons that should be obvious to anyone but you I guess.

I think season-wise, just like most do, I guess, although I think Vinícius has been as good as Mbappé since 21-22 and De Bruyne has been at least as good since the French reach world class status. I also believe that Griezmann and Kane are not worse at their best, but I understand why they are ranked lower, as the former had some bad years at Barcelona and the latter has been a bit disappointing on the biggest stage. Both are easily on par with Mbappé this season though.

He did not play well vs Sociedad and vs Barcelona. He was very poor vs Barcelona. Average yesterday. I'm writing this without actually comparing him to Vinicius;it's just my observation. Since that world cup cameo, Mbappe has not played well in a single big game for PSG and has been mostly poor for France. Again, nothing to do with Vinicius.

One of the best big game players of recent years, showing more than Mbappé in big CL games, considering they are buying him for the same position. He also helps the team out off the ball way more than Mbappé. He set the tone for the match in the first 20 seconds by nearly getting through and geeing up the crowd. Wonder how they'll work it out next season, could upset the balance.

He's a player I tune in to watch. His drive and desire to find exploits is the best in the game - he is relentless. I keep using that word for him because I don't think any other single word better sums him up.

I don't think Real are dumb enough to mess with his position in the side.

Turned Kimmich inside out tonight. And Kimmich is supposed to be a big deal in his own right.

I have the feeling Vinicius will be better appreciated toward the end of his career, as opposed to those players who every moment is a celebration.

If Real is smart, they don't disrupt the team chemistry. Vinicius at LW is perfect, there is no need for Mbappe there.

Vincius actually plays that position like it’s supposed to be played. Rashford is just a wide striker pretending to be a winger.

Not really, all Mbappe needs is an okay euro, which is pretty likely, considering the squad France have, and he will win it.

International football overrides everything.
