    Real Sociedad de Fútbol, S.A.D., more commonly referred to as Real Sociedad or La Real, is a Spanish professional sports club in the city of San Sebastián, Basque Country. Football was introduced to San Sebastián in the early 1900s by students and workers returning from Britain. In 1904, they formed the San Sebastian Recreation Club and in 1905 the club competed in the Copa del Rey. In May 1905, the San Sebastian Football Club was formed as a separate branch of the club. In 1909, it applied to enter the Copa del Rey but complications over registration permits saw them compete as Club Ciclista de San Sebastián. This team defeated Club Español de Madrid 3–1 in the final. Out of the confusion, the Sociedad de Futbol was formed on 7 September 1909. Subsequently, the club was a founder member of La Liga in 1929.

    Traditionally the club followed a policy (similar to that of its rival Athletic) of signing only Basque players, before signing Republic of Ireland forward John Aldridge in 1989. While a strong Basque contingent has been retained among its players, nowadays both non-Basque Spaniards and foreign players are represented at the club. Its youth section subsequent to the all-Basque era has still been very successful in developing internationally renowned players, such as World Cup winners Xabi Alonso and Antoine Griezmann. Real Sociedad won the Liga title in 1980–81 and 1981–82, and last finished runner-up in 2002–03. The club has also won the Copa del Rey twice, in 1909 and 1987. It contests the Basque derby against rivals Athletic Bilbao, and plays its home games at the Anoeta Stadium.

    Team should be...

    ------------------De Gea------------------
    Dalot--Lindelof--Martinez--Shaw
    ----------------Casemiro----------------
    -----Fernandes-----Fred-----
    Antony------Ronaldo------Rashford

    Subs: Heaton, Maguire, Malacia, McTominay, VDB, Eriksen, Garnacho, Sancho, Elanga

    Midfield looked knackard today so needs freshening up and with Bruno now missing the weekend game might as well be Eriksen given a rest in this one

    Tbh, I don't care about finishing first or second in the group.

    Will be tough, need to win by 2 due to the goal difference. Kind of in the mindset of "eh, feck it, we'll play who we play".

    Luckily, our manager probably does. We add an extra two matches to our schedule if we come second, and probably ones against someone like Barcelona/Juventus/Atletico/Sevilla/Ajax at that.

    I absolutely care. A win is vital. We dont want extra games.
    this cup is a route into the champions league next year as a back up to what be a very hard contested top 4.

    Hopefully the manager doesn't share this opinion, we can do without the 2 extra games especially when they'll be against a good team dropping out of the UCL

    If you really don't care about coming first or second why not rest Martinez, Casemiro and Bruno?

    I hope we thrash these shithousing feckers. They got such a dodgy non-penalty win over us in the reverse fixture and then proceeded to waste time until the end. Can’t stand Spanish teams.

    Was honestly a disgrace of a penalty kick.

    Is Lindelöf available?
    Bruno is suspended next weekend.
    We don't have alternative to Casemiro, I never want to see McFred again.

    We need to field a decent team too. I don't care about winning or losing doesn't mean I like seeing the team gets embarrassed.

    Yea I get the point but really I would prefer to either fully commit to the win or if not rest Martinez and Casemiro at least as I'm worried about they being overplayed, even if we need to put up with Shaw or McTominay at CB and Fred in CM for a game. I didn't actually remember Bruno was suspended

    Lindelöf is just sick, so he should be back in time. McTominay and Eriksen have been ok when playing together, so I don't agree there is no alternative to Casemiro.

    You are right, It's between Case-Fred or McTominay-Eriksen, and I'd pick Case here as he is more used to playing against spanish teams.

    2-1 would do for us wouldn’t it?

    No. All forms of away goals were abolished before the 21/22 season.

    Tiebreakers
    1. Points in head-to-head matches among the tied teams;
    2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches among the tied teams;
    3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among the tied teams;
    4. If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
    5. Goal difference in all group matches;
    6. Goals scored in all group matches;
    7. Away goals scored in all group matches;
    8. Wins in all group matches;
    9. Away wins in all group matches;
    10. Disciplinary points (direct red card = 3 points; double yellow card = 3 points; single yellow card = 1 point);
    11. UEFA club coefficient.

    Due to the abolition of the away goals rule, head-to-head away goals are no longer applied as a tiebreaker starting from last season. However, total away goals are still applied as a tiebreaker.

    Even if we put out our strongest team I would not rate our chances of winning with minimum 2 goals at more than max 30%, and based on that I would play the reserves and prioritise the Villa game.
    I fully recognise the importance of finishing first in the group, but to go to Spain and being forced to win by 2 against a defensively very strong team like Sociedad is unlikely.

    Don't start casemiro, seems to need some rest.

    We really need to win this if don't want to complicate things but I'm afraid we'll come off just short of the requirement.

    I really want to see us win the competition but it's not the end of the world if we finish second in the group. The teams that already got knocked out of the champions league are here for a reason and it will make for an exciting tie at any rate.

    That being said, a 2-0 win would be nice.

    I still cannot get over the penalty they got at ours. How no-one had to account for that decision is laughable.

    I’m confused about the last part. So head to head away goals aren’t taken into account but total away goals are still applied as a tie breaker? If we go there and win 1-0 or 2-1 it gets decided on goal difference?

    Either way we should be looking to score twice anyway. Real Betis went there tonight and beat them 2-0, so I don’t see why we can’t.

    Exactly this, and they would have the better GD if we ‘only’ won 2-1.

    If we win by any 1 goal margin, we finish 2nd on goal difference.
    If we win by any 2+ goal margin, we finish 1st on H2H.

    If we had scored a 4th goal the other night, any 1 goal margin win here would've meant finishing 1st on goals scored.

    Personally don't really see the point of away goals/wins as tiebreakers (just go straight to disciplinary and coefficients) but I guess it doesn't really matter. Tiebreakers that far down on the list coming into play is very rare.

    Ole beat them 4-0 over there a couple years back. Ten Hag has got this

    Feels like a nice tester for later on in the European season. Confident we can get a positive result, but will be difficult to get the necessary margin of victory.

    Tough task to beat these guys in their home ground but I would love it! Still sore about the daft pen they got at OT.
