Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies), are a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue - leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park - which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

Jose's never won at Newcastle in the league :nervous:

Can either be a very tricky game there or an easy one, seems to be no in between.

    De Gea
    Valencia Jones Rojo Shaw
    Matic
    McTominay Pogba
    Sanchez Lukaku Martial

It should be very comfortable on paper. Newcastle aren't the same force they were under Pardew. I'm going for 0-3 win for United.

They're up there for the taking, not really that strong team.

Pogba will start over Scott and maybe Young will alternate for Shaw (hope not) but other than this I expect a similar lineup like today.

I agree. Shaw over Young at LB any day. McTominay will probably be involved as a substitute. I also expect to see Jones return from his illness.

    ---------------------DDG---------------------
    TV----Smalling-----Rojo-------Shaw
    -----Ander----Matic-----Pogba----
    Mata----------Martial--------Sanchez

feel bad for Martial- was in super form until he was shunted to the right vrs Spurs - I'd give him a start in this balanced side

    De Gea
    Valencia - Lindelof - Jones - Shaw
    Matic
    Pogba Herrera
    Mata Alexis
    Lukaku

I'd want give Lindelof a start for this game. This is probably just me, but i don't trust Smalling in the long term.

I think Pogba and Young will be back in, I'm just not sure if Jose will be smart and go 4-3-3 and just keep McTominay in the mix, or drop him and go back to the fecking 4-2-3-1. I'm going to try and be optimisitc and go for the former.

Push the back-line further up and make it compact that way. Apply one of the CB as the "extra DMP" in position. Play with One DMP and a attacking game with sharp forward passes and runs. This style of play will (as I do see it) suit both players and Club.

    David - Valencia - E.B. - Rojo - Shaw - Matic - Pogba - Mata - Alexis - Martial - Lukaku.

Would love to see this. Won't happen though, Lukaku will start.

Let's hope Jose has got the clue to choose 433 this time.

    Think it will be

    DDG
    Valencia- Smalling- Jones- Shaw
    Matic-Pogba
    Lingard- Alexis - Martial
    Lukaku

The CBs are the only doubt I have

    De Gea

    Valencia Jones Smalling Young
    Matic Pogba
    Lingard Alexis Mata
    Lukaku

Is what I think the lineup will be. Mata and Lingard for Martial and Rashford will probably be two of the subs... no idea on the third.

Don't really think 4-3-3 is needed against them. Wouldn't expect it tbh.
How do they play in midfield? High press? I haven't watched Newcastle at all. I'm just thinking many of our away games need a midfield three.

After all this, you still put Jones right of Smalling and Pogba left of Matić in a midfield two?

Kudos for Mata on the rightwing, though.

No need to be anal about specific naming placements. Smalling and Jones at CB, Matic and Pogba in midfield. It is 11 names centred, not a lot of effort.

Only places where it really matters is fullback and wing, though as Mourinho tends to move the attacking players around even that doesn't matter.

Pogba himself seems a bit anal about not playing right of Matić, it even got him dropped from the team. It's just that they never play there.

    ————Matic
    McTominay—-Pogba

    Alexis————-Martial
    ———-Lukaku

Apparently, Newcastle are very weak defending from the wings, so, contrary to what we've done against Huddersfield, it would be useful playing someone there that actually doesn't drift centrally all the time, like Martial. Even if Mata has been good lately and combines very well with Sánchez, I would go like this:

    Lingard Sánchez Martial
    Lukaku

If not 4-3-3 then a variation on the 4-4-2 that we saw when Pogba came on and before Rashford and Martial at the weekend:

    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling Jones Shaw
    Lingard McTominay Matic Pogba
    Lukaku Sanchez

A full week for the lads to get on the same page with Sanchez, who's going to be very influential in attack. 3-0

We should bounce the Mags, Palace were all over them a like a rash yesterday.

I want us to go 4-3-3 and get used to attacking at speed from that formation. First and foremost it gives us better solidity (and an actual midfield) but there's no reason we can't attack quickly with the pace we have up front and Pogba pulling the strings.

    Lingard?? Where for art thou??

 An admirable, if predictable, sentiment from you sir but I must inform you that doesn't mean 'where are you?'.

Ahh well, at least I tried to ask it in a different way!

Indeed and it's a very interesting question. He's my PotM for January but I can see the logic in Jesse missing out if we're going to play 4-3-3 cruel and strange though it appears.

    DDG
    Val, Mike, Rojo, Shaw
    Matic
    Herrera Pogba
    Sanchez Martial
    Lukaku
Should be more than capable of beating the toon.
