CSKA COACH: REDS AT THEIR BEST SINCE SIR ALEX

CSKA Moscow will face the best Manchester United team for at least four years, according to the Russian club's head coach, when the sides meet in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Viktor Goncharenko provided that assessment at Tuesday's pre-match press conference, where he was joined by one of his star players, midfielder Aleksandr Golovin.

"Since Sir Alex Ferguson left [in 2013], this current version of Manchester United is without any doubt, their strongest team," said Goncharenko.

"Sir Alex Ferguson created so many strong versions of Manchester United. We can compare it [the current side] with the 1999 version, the 2003 team... they have had a lot of great squads and great teams. The transfer policy that Manchester United is developing now is good and clear so they are making themselves stronger. In great clubs, it must be exactly like this."

Golovin was equally respectful of the Reds, when he was asked if there are any defenders he looks forward to pitting his attacking wits against.

"I wouldn't like to point out anyone personally because we all know that we are going to face a strong group of players," said the 21-year-old Russia international.

"We need to be as strong as possible in every part of the pitch. We need to be ready to encounter them in every area because they are so strong as a team."

CSKA's press conference followed United's media briefing, in which Jose Mourinho confirmed that three midfielders - Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba - have missed the trip. Not that Goncharenko is taking any encouragement from the absences, saying: "The characteristics of a great club is that if they lose some top players, they can compensate by bringing in other strong players.

"The players who come into the team, like [Ander] Herrera, may have different characteristics to the players who are missing, like Fellaini, but it doesn't mean that the level of the team's performance will be decreased. Maybe some things will change with respect to the set-pieces but we still won't find any weakness in our opponents there."

As for his own team's strengths, Goncharenko commented: "I have no doubts that we have a lot of experience and class. Our task is to find some weak points in the opposition and put pressure there.

"We know there will be a great atmosphere at our wonderful stadium and we will be well supported. Our team is going to be so hugely motivated and focused on the match.

"Despite having spoken a lot about the strong qualities of Manchester United, in any game against any opponent, we can change the course of the match.

"We have to keep looking for our chances and soon as our supporters are feeling that we are close to achieving a great performance and a great result, then I am sure that we can succeed a lot."

PFC Central Sport Club of the Army Moscow (nicknamed Koni - Horses, or Krasno-sinie - Red-blues), is a Russian professional football club based in Moscow, and playing in the Russian Premier League. The history of the CSKA dates back to 1911. Officers in the army of the Tsar who loved skiing founded the Society of Ski Sports Amateurs. Later on they began to develop other sports and games. The club stopped its activities due to the 1917 Russian Revolution. After the Civil War the Red Army began to encourage sports activities in military units – especially in the cavalry. Coincidentally, the club’s first stadium was located at the former royal stables, which explains the nickname of the club - koni. Army athletes excelled in football, track-and-field and swimming. In 1928 sports activities of the Red Army were united under the name of the Red Army Hobby Club (CDKA – Central House of the Red Army). The name was changed several times up until 1960, when the club took the name of CSKA.

CSKA had its most successful period after World War II with five titles in six seasons. It won a total of 7 Soviet Top League championships, including the last-ever season in 1991. The club has also won 6 Russian Premier League titles, and the 2004-05 UEFA Cup. CSKA was the official team of the Soviet Army during the communist era. The club later became privatized and in 2004, the club received a major financial infusion from a sponsorship deal with Sibneft, an oil company owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. The Main Moscow derby is the name of the match between two Moscow based teams – CSKA and Spartak. CSKA play their home games at the VEB Arena, also known as Arena CSKA.

Would take a draw here if it means we can rotate a little bit.

    Lukaku
    Martial Mata Lingard
    Matic Herrera
    Darmian Blind Smalling Young
    De Gea

The Russian teams, at home are very strong, so this could be a tricky one.
The one advantage we have is that Jose is the manager and he will know how to get a draw/win against a side like CSKA.
Under LVG, I'd expect a loss (100%), but Jose should have a cunning plan designed around playing a defensive game and hitting these guys on the counter.
I think Jose will accept a draw, here.

Will Jones and Bailly still be ineligible for this?

Both will be back surely? Jones IIRC was given a 2 match ban (Real Madrid and Basel) and Bailly 3 games (Ajax, Real Madrid and Basel)

We got a 1-1 under LVG

I'd take the same again tbh

    Team should be...

    ---------------De Gea---------------
    Valencia--Bailly--Jones--Darmian
    ----------------Matic----------------
    -------Herrera-------Fellaini-------
    Mhkitaryan---Lukaku-------Martial

Subs: Romero, Smalling, Young, Carrick, Mata, Lingard, Rashford

    De Gea
    Valencia Jones Smalling Blind
    Matic Herrera
    Lingard Mkhitaryan Martial
    Lukaku

Really shouldnt need Fellaini for this game

How is the playing condition in Moscow at this time? Anyone Russian resident can help?

Feel great being back looking forward to next game just right after a win unlike the last few years.

Draw isn't enough. We must win this so a draw in Lisbon will be enough for us through the difficult fixtures at this time. We're still in Sep so the weather and pitch condition will probably be good in Russia.

    De Gea
    Valencia - Bailly - Jones - Blind
    Matic - Fellaini
    Mata - Mikhi - Martial
    Lukaku

    Darmian-Bailly-Jones-Blind
    ----------------Carrick---------------
    ---Fellaini---------------Herrera--

2-0 United. Big Rom and Martial

Tough away game. Wouldn't mind a draw here. I'm guessing Martial will start. Hope Jose rotates the squad a bit.

I think Bailly and Jones are still suspended for this, I'd transplant the whole back 4 to get 2 units used to operating together. I'd also give Lingard a game as this is what a squad is for.

They're fine to play. They were suspended for the Super Cup and first CL game. However I won't be surprised if Smalling and Lindelof play to rest both for the Palace game. I'll prefer the opposite, though. Play Bailly and Jones against Cska and Smalling and Lindelof against Palace as they aren't much of a threat in their current state.

Think we'll win. CSKA haven't been that convincing so far this season despite fluking a win at Benfica.

They're not a bad side. Don't underestimate them. They won all 4 qualifiers without conceding and did manage to a dig out a win in Portugal.

A draw would be a good result.

The two Brazilians, Vitinho and Fernandes, are decent players and they have some other players like Dzagoev who are capable on their day.

I'll never underestimate an away game against a Russian side, but I'm definitely much more optimistic about getting a win in Moscow than I was when we played them with Van Gaal at the helm.

They were a much better side two years ago with Musa and Doumbia in attack. Genuinely frightening on the break.

Ah right, I thought Bailly was definitely 3 due to the red card. Not sure what we'll see then, could be any combo, not sure Mourinho would trust Libndelof in the PL yet though, I think if he plays a game it'll be this one.

Can see Darmian getting a start here. Also think Lingard might get a start here. De Gea- Valencia- Bailly-Jones-Darmian- Matic-Herrera-Fellaini-Mkhitaryan- Lingard-Lukaku. Although us going more offensive and playing with Martial could be a good option as well.

Strong team needed, maybe a couple of changes only , Martial and Darmian in for Rashford and Young perhaps.

He's had 3 remember, the Europa final, the Super Cup final, and the first champs league game.

I'm seeing lots of realistic 4-3-3 but also overoptimistic 4-2-3-1, this in a Champions League away game against a 3-5-2 team. I think Mourinho's going for 3-5-2 also, and he tried it twice in the last two games.

I didn't include them in my lineup but to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if Jose rotated heavily and Smalling, Lindelof and Lingard all came in. Part of me thinks why not?

This might be one of the toughest lineups to predict. Pretty much everything can happen.

    DDG
    Valencia, Jones, Bailly, Blind
    Matic, Herrera, Fellaini
    Lingard, Lukaku, Martial.

Can rest some key players vs Palace at weekend.

    Not confident,

    -------------------DDG-----------------------------

    ----------------Matic-----Herrera--------------------
    Mata--------------Fellaini-------------------Martial

    CSKA Moscow 1 - 1 Man United
    Lukaku

I was disturbed when I heard some guy on talksport talking about CSKA when the draw was made. Instead of saying "C""S""K""A", he said it all as if it was a word like "Siska".

Anyway, I think we'll win this. A comfortable 2-0 win. Will take a draw though

Definitely, do they still play on the artificial pitch as well? As that might effect who Mourinho picks.
