Associazione Sportiva Roma, commonly referred to as Roma and nicknamed I Giallorossi (The Yellow and Reds) or La Lupa (The She-Wolf), is an Italian professional football club based in Rome. A.S. Roma was founded in the spring of 1927 when Italo Foschi initiated the merger of three older Italian Football Championship clubs from the city of Rome: Roman FC, SS Alba-Audace and Fortitudo-Pro Roma SGS. Italo Foschi was an important Roman representative of the ruling National Fascist Party. The purpose of the merger was to give the Italian capital a strong club to rival that of the more dominant Northern Italian clubs of the time. The only major Roman club to resist the merger was Lazio because of the intervention of the army General Vaccaro, a member of the club and executive of Italian Football Federation. All three founding clubs were relegated, but the fascist-aligned FIGC bet over the capacity of the new team to give a stronger representation to the capital of Italy, and they were awarded a wild card for the Divisione Nazionale, the Serie A forerunner.

An early season in which Roma made a large mark was the 1930–31 championship, where the club finished as runners-up behind Juventus. After being inconsistent for much of the late 1930s, Roma recorded an unexpected title triumph in the 1941–42 season by winning their first ever Scudetto title. The 18 goals scored by local player Amedeo Amadei were essential to the Alfréd Schaffer-coached Roma side winning the title. Former Milan player Nils Liedholm was the manager in the 1970s and 1980s, with players such as Bruno Conti, Agostino Di Bartolomei, Roberto Pruzzo and Falcão in the ranks. In 1982–83, the Roman club won the title for the first time in 41 years, amidst celebrations in the capital. The following season, Roma finished as runners-up in Italy and collected a Coppa Italia title, they also finished as runners-up in the European Cup final of 1984. Subsequently, Roma returned to form in the 2000s, beginning the decade in great style by winning their third ever Serie A title in 2000–01. The club's captain, Francesco Totti, was a large reason for the title victory and he would become one of the main heroes in the club's history, going on to break several club records.

In Italian football, Roma is a club with many rivalries; first and foremost is their rivalry with Lazio, the club with whom they share the Stadio Olimpico. The derby between the two is called the Derby della Capitale, it is amongst the most heated and emotional footballing rivalries in the world. Against Napoli, Roma also compete in the Derby del Sole, meaning the "Derby of the Sun". Nowadays, fans also consider other Serie A giants like Juventus (a rivalry born especially in the 1980s), Milan and Internazionale (increased in recent years) among their rivals, as these four compete for the top four spots in the league table to secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League. Since 1953, Roma have played their home matches at the Stadio Olimpico.

Have to be beating these, their quality isn't great. I expect it to be pretty comfortable.

    Team should be...

    ---------------------De Gea---------------------
    AWB---Lindelof---Maguire---Shaw
    -----McTominay-----Fred-----
    Greenwood---Bruno---Pogba
    ---------------------Cavani---------------------

Subs: Henderson, Tuanzebe, Williams, Telles, Matic, VDB, Mata, James, Rashford

    De Gea
    Wan Bissaka Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    McTominay Fred
    Rashford Bruno Pogba
    Cavani

Would be huge to start off with an away win.

I think Ole would consider dropping Bruno if we were away from home on Thursday. As it is, he may just put Pogba in the double pivot to fit all his other attackers in. Only other decision is in goal.

    ........... Henderson
    AWB Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    ........... Pogba Fred
    Greenwood Bruno Rashford
    ............... Cavani

Same XI as the Spurs game except DDG should be the keeper since he's going to play all our remaining EL games.

4 important players back from injury for Roma EL Shaarawy, Kumbulla, Spinazzola and ex United player Smalling. The latter starting tonight but I won't pay much attention to that match tonight as Roma have rested a number of starters this semi final.

Roma as we all know are no world beaters but they have been competitive and got plenty of draws against the top 4 teams in Italy this season and are decent at home so I think it's important that United win this leg in Old Trafford.

I'm going to guess at the below starting 11, but if Ole feels he needs McFred then Pogba or Greenwood will be on the bench as we know Rashford won't be.

Roma are in awful form and we have a vastly superior team. Won't be any excuses not to beat these over two legs

Would prefer to be playing away first as that's where we generally do our best work.

I'm confident we'll go through in the end but I think the tie will still be in the balance after Thursday

Reading that Roma are mediocre and then seeing their fans on twitter slamming Fonesca, one may feel we have upper hand here. But these are exact kind of matches we feck up in. So, let's see Ole can get more than a semi this time.

My worry is that if Ole can get more than a semi, that's it's been that long that he may get over excited and not be able to last through to the final.

I just hope that deciding to fully focus on the Europa League doesn't backfire and we end up trophyless for yet another season

They had another bad result today but their injured players are just coming back, including Mike Smalling.

Get the feeling they will look for a draw and hope their big players are more fit in a weeks time. It does look good for us though with the two teams contrasting form. A convincing win at OT and this tie should be in the bag.

If he does not blow the Italian job, Ole will finally get over his semi issues and have the happy ending he deserves this time around.

Haven’t played them in 13 years and before that played them 6 times in 13 months.

Shaw, Rashford, Fred, McTominay and Lindelöf surely will play against Liverpool, so we have to see some rotation. We should seek to dominate possession, set a high line and get balls into the box. Donny with a free role in the middle.

    .................. De Gea

    Bissaka - Bailly - Maguire - Telles

    .............Donny - Matic

    ... Mata - Fernandes - Pogba

    ................. Cavani

Mata ?? There’s more chance Of me starting than Mata and Van De Beek doesn’t play In that position .

Why would we not rest players today & against Pool?

We are in a European Cup semifinal. Top four is still in doubt.

Priorities seem a bit skewed. It would be nice to hammer Pool, but that wins us feck all.

    Focus on the hardware.

Donny with a free role to run forward, so DM only on the sheet. Ole was praising Mata´s form in training while Greenwood has been playing a lot lately. Mata can get crossers into the box for Cavani, Pogba and Donny. I think this team could work against Roma while at the same time planning for the Liverpool game.

This is my team anyway, and not a prediction of what Ole will go with.

    De Gea
    AWB-VNL-Maguire-Shaw
    ----------Pogba-Fred-----------
    Greenwood-Bruno-Rashford
    -----------------Cavani-------------

    2-0

It has you be Pogba/Fred and not McFred. The rest of the XI picks itself.

Crush Roma in the first leg, please.
