Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

    Team should be...

    --------------------De Gea--------------------
    AWB---Lindelof---Maguire---Shaw
    --------------Fred---------Matic--------------
    Greenwood--Bruno--Rashford
    --------------------Cavani--------------------

Subs: Henderson, Tuanzebe, Bailly, Williams, McTominay, Telles, VDB, James, Martial

    Should be:
    Henderson
    AWB-Bailly-Maguire-Shaw
    Matic-Fred
    Greenwood-Fernandes-Rashford
    Cavani (Martial if not fit)

With the Europa result we can go as strong as needed. Cavani up top for James, Shaw at the back and the rest as it was; including Henderson.

Still in that territory where every game is a cup final. Got to keep winning to keep it at the very least respectable. City are gonna win the league? Keep the tally down as much as we can... do we want someone to overtake us? No chance.

With Cavani and McTominay likely out I'd like to see the below team but I suspect it will be Lindelof and Martial over Bailly and James.

    Henderson

    AWB
    Bailly
    Maguire
    Shaw

    Fred
    Matic

    Greenwood
    Bruno
    Rashford

    Cavani

3-0 to United. Newcastle are so poor without Calum Wilson.

Expect them to employ the low block which was so effective for both Sheff Utd & WBA against us recently

A kind request to admins - please change “Shalo Shoretire” to “Shola Shoretire” in the lineup prediction options. Many thanks! :)

Now Mata’s returned from his mysterious absence, I wonder if we might see him here to break a defensive Newcastle down.

Hopefully De Beek and Cavani are fit to feature. Would like to see Bailly start again but I bet Lindelof will be restored to starting 11.

Bruce will go full park the bus mode while looking to score from a Man United error. This season Newcastle have got away results/points against West Ham, Spurs, Wolves, Palace and Everton.

Is this going to be the usual us and struggle after a very good performance? He have to beat these they are so poor right now

Is this going to be the usual us and struggle after a very good performance? He have to beat these they are so poor right now

Probably, Ole will start Lindelof and Maguire at the back and Rashford on this the right , an absolute recipe for disaster,

I fully understand squad rotation but it's becoming a joke how often our team changes match to match, especially in defence, for me that's an area that needs to stay as consistent as possible,

    I'd like to see:

    ---------------Henderson----------
    AWB-- Bailly--Maguire--Shaw
    ----------------McSauce-------------
    --------------Bruno---Fred---------
    -----GWood---Cavani---Rashford--

    De Gea
    AWB - Bailly - Maguire - Shaw
    McTominay - Fred
    James - Bruno - Rashford
    Cavani

    I think that’ll be the 11.

    Henderson
    Wan Bissaka Bailly Maguire Shaw
    McTominay Fred
    Greenwood Bruno Rashford
    Cavani
Though we'll probably see De Gea and Lindelof for Henderson and Bailly.

Diallo should start as captain based on last nights performance. They need to re-decorate Old Trafford and have a big picture of his head on the seat covers.

    Would like to see:-

    Henderson.
    AWB.
    Bailly.
    Maguire.
    Shaw.
    Fred.
    VDB. (if fit).
    Mata.
    Bruno
    Rashford.
    Greenwood.

We need players who can make those little runs in behind to break the low block, that's why VDB and Mata.

    I'd go with

    Henderson

    Shaw
    Maguire
    Bailly
    AWB

    Fred
McTominay (if he's injured, then Matic)

    Bruno

    Rashford
    Cavani
    Mason

We have to win against Newcastle - no excuses. If we're struggling to break them down, I'd sacrifice a midfielder for either Donny or Mata early in the 2nd half.

We've had a sticky period, and it's time to put that right and start getting consecutive wins under our belt. I'm fairly confident we can get a result when we play Chelsea at the bridge as well.

It was inevitable that people would want James to play on the back of last night's very good performance, but context needs to be kept in mind. We've seen it a lot of times so it shouldn't surprise anyone at this point. James, like any other player reliant upon physical advantages, thrives versus teams that offer up a high line and lots of space on the break. It would be a mistake (as proven time and time again) to play him versus a Newcastle side that will sit deep and force him to play in front of two lines of four.

Regardless of performance vs. Sociedad, Newcastle is not a game for him and playing him from the start would be a tactical clanger. We're going to struggle to break them down, as is always the case with us versus deep-defending teams; we need creative ball players who will be able to operate well in limited space in one half of the field.

    Henderson
    AWB Bailly Lindelof Shaw
    Greenwood Fred Matic Rashford
    Cavani Bruno

Let Scott recover & give Maguire a rest. 4-5-1 in defence, 4-2-4 in attack.

Anyone calling for James doesn’t know football. He’s useless against a low block. Newcastle are not going to play a ridiculously high line.

I would like Henderson to be given this game and the Real Sociedad return leg. It's the perfect chance to give Dean three games in a row. If he impressed enough then it's a big decision for Ole to make against Chelsea. I do expect Dave to play against Newcastle, Chelsea and Man City though.

Is the presser today? It'll be interesting to see the fitness of McTominay, van de Beek, and Cavani. I think it's possible any of them could start. I definitely expect Cavani to lead the line if fit, along with Greenwood & Rashford. We may end up being forced to play Matic & Fred, which would be a little disappointing as I'd like Matic to play against Real Sociedad instead.

Bailly should start over Lindelof, but I expect Victor to start, along with Shaw returning. So, expected line-up assuming the aforementioned players with knocks have recovered:

    de Gea
    Wan-Bissaka Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    McTominay Fred
    Greenwood Bruno Rashford
    Cavani

Hopefully Diallo can come off the bench, along with Donny and maybe Matic/James to get Bruno and someone else off.

I think we can afford to rotate everyone against Real Sociedad, I wouldn't be surprised if they rotate heavily themselves as I expect them to prioritize La Liga now anyway.

Agreed. Not the right match for James, he'll start again next Thursday.

    1. Rashford plays from the left, not the right.
    2. James/ Mata or Greenwood start on the right, not Martial or Rashford
    3. Henderson will be better here for his aerial game
    4. Bailly needs to play these sort of games

    I think we will see

    DDG
    AWB Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    Fred Matic
    Rashford Fernandes Martial
    Greenwood

    What I want to see?

    Henderson
    Williams* Bailly Maguire Shaw
    Fred
    Greenwood Mata Fernandes Rashford
    Greenwood

    *For his attacking

    Henderson
    AWB Bailly Maguire Shaw
    McFred
    Greenwood Bruno Rashford
    Cavani

    should do a job.

    Is Bruce a bus parker?

We normally beat his teams handily don't we? Hasn't it become a running joke that he doesn't actually want to beat United?

This will be different than last night. It will be a typical home game. Toon will have five across the back four in fro of them and one on the halfway line. Another attack v defence 90minutes of boring footy unless we get an early goal and they have to come out. There will be controversy for sure given that Baggies goal which has made it ok to put your hands in the face of a defender unless you are a United player and just looking at the keeper is a free kick. I hope Hendo starts this one.
