PFC Central Sport Club of the Army Moscow (nicknamed Koni - Horses, or Krasno-sinie - Red-blues), is a Russian professional football club based in Moscow, and playing in the Russian Premier League. The history of the CSKA dates back to 1911. Officers in the army of the Tsar who loved skiing founded the Society of Ski Sports Amateurs. Later on they began to develop other sports and games. The club stopped its activities due to the 1917 Russian Revolution. After the Civil War the Red Army began to encourage sports activities in military units – especially in the cavalry. Coincidentally, the club’s first stadium was located at the former royal stables, which explains the nickname of the club - koni. Army athletes excelled in football, track-and-field and swimming. In 1928 sports activities of the Red Army were united under the name of the Red Army Hobby Club (CDKA – Central House of the Red Army). The name was changed several times up until 1960, when the club took the name of CSKA.

CSKA had its most successful period after World War II with five titles in six seasons. It won a total of 7 Soviet Top League championships, including the last-ever season in 1991. The club has also won 6 Russian Premier League titles, and the 2004-05 UEFA Cup. CSKA was the official team of the Soviet Army during the communist era. The club later became privatized and in 2004, the club received a major financial infusion from a sponsorship deal with Sibneft, an oil company owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. The Main Moscow derby is the name of the match between two Moscow based teams – CSKA and Spartak. CSKA play their home games at the VEB Arena, also known as Arena CSKA.

Doubt Mou will go completely 2nd string, but it wont be far off, given this is the start of 9 games in 27 days!

    Romero
    Darmian, Tuanzebe, Blind, Shaw
    Pogba, Mctominay
    Mata, Mhkitariyan, Rashford
    Ibra

We might really regret not getting the job done last game. Should be playing a fecking kindergarten side.

    Romero
    Darmian--Smalling--Tuanzebe--Blind
    Herrera--Pogba
    Mkhitaryan--Mata--Rashford
    Ibrahimovic

If no Ibra then 4-3-3 with McTominay starting.

    Romero
    Darmian Lindelof Smalling Blind
    Herrera Pogba
    Mata Mkhitaryan Martial
    Rashford

    Rashford

Wouldn't risk any of these - our game vs City is as close to a cup final as we're going to get. Lose that game, and the league is effectively over.

I would have mctominay starting. See how he gets on. If he shines play him at the weekend.

Wouldn't it be 3-4-1-2? They play 3-5-2 and 3-4-1-2 is how we lined up against them last time, plus we've gone with a back three in the last two games to match a back three.

Maybe Mkhitaryan could start this game as the ten to get some confidence back, with Rashford up alongside Lukaku (or even Zlatan) for game-time.

Mkhitaryan gets a game, so does McTominay alongside Pogba, Rashford gets a game.

Rest as many players as possible that played v Arsenal, we need them for the city game.

A complete second string bar Pogba please. City game is too important. Should still be pretty strong.

    Romero
    Darmian Tuanzebe Blind Shaw
    Pogba McTominay
    Mkhi Mata Rashford
    Ibra

    Something like that

If we lose we still qualify first, don't we? We'd be top on goal difference, assuming we don't get smashed which is unlikely.

    Romero, Pogba, Ibra and Rashford.

Plus 7 kids. Have all the main boys wrapped up in cotton wool.

I’d rest as many players as possible for the derby.

    Romero

    Lindelof
    Tuanzebe
    Blind

    Darmian
    McTominay
    Pogba
    Shaw

    Mata

    Ibrahimovic
    Rashford

Yeah. We can lose 0-3 and we still win group. We would have to lose by 7 to possible not go through

Pogba should play this, otherwise most players who played as starters against Arsenal need a proper rest. We can still field a strong team though.

Hope Bailly is back as well.

    Romero
    Darmian - Bailly - Lindelof - Blind
    Scott - Pogba - Herrera
    Mata - Mikhi
    Rashford

    Romero
    Darmian Bailly Rojo Blind
    Pogba Fellaini
    Miki
    Mata Ibra Rashford
    That should do it.

If we go with 3 at the back then we can give Zlatan his first start :

    Romero
    Darmian - Bailly - Lindelof - Rojo - Blind
    Scott - Pogba
    Mikhi
    Rashford - Zlatan

Yeah. We can lose 0-3 and we still win group. We would have to lose by 7 to possible not go through
No I don't think it's possible for us to not go through. First tiebreaker is head to head results, which we already have over Basel who are 3 points behind. We have to avoid losing by 4 goals so CSKA don't overtake us. Don't know why but some outlets are still saying it's possible for us to not qualify but we have qualified and barring a freak result we will finish first

I'd like to see a full raft of changes, might as well play Pogba though as he'll be missing for 3 games. Not sure if Jones or Bailly will be fit but hopefully he can get in here.

Incorrect. 3 teams could end up with 12p then it is h2h between those teams. Everybody would have 6p out of those games and then deciding factor would be goal difference on those h2h matches. We are +5 now, basel -1, moscow -4. If we lose by 6, goal difference would be united -1, basel -1, moscow +2, but we still go through with more goals scored. So as I said if we lose by 7 and basel wins we are out. Not going to happen obviously.

I don't expect Shaw to start but he should be given some minutes during second half, 20 minutes or something like that.

Might as well play Pogba since he can't play league, but Matic has to rest

    Romero
    Darmian - Smalling - Rojo - Blind
    Herrera - Pogba - McTominay
    Mata - Lukaku - Rashford

Don't think Zlatan is ready to start, sadly

    Group A: Manchester United (12 points) v CSKA Moskva (9), Benfica (0) v Basel (9)
    • Manchester United would qualify in first place with a point (and can afford to lose by six goals and still go through). If they lose to CSKA and Basel do not win, United and CSKA will go through with first place determined by head-to-head results between the two; United won 4-1 in Russia and would have the superior overall goal difference if they lose 4-1. If CSKA and Basel win, the top two will be decided in a three-way head to head; United would be through in this situation unless they lost by seven goals, and would be top unless they lost by five goals).
    • Basel will go through if they better CSKA's result, or if both teams draw or lose due to their superior head-to-head. If CSKA and Basel win, the top two will be decided in a three-way head to head, and Basel would be through unless CSKA win by a margin of between three and six goals inclusive).
    • CSKA must pick up more points than Basel to ensure second place (if both win, CSKA must win by a margin of three goals to go through in the three-way head-to-head and by a margin of five goals to finish top).
    • Benfica will finish bottom.

Will we keep the 3-4-1-2 that matches CSKA's, but might cause problems, for instance, to fit some players in need of minutes (Mata) and demand more of our injured centerbacks? Or are we changing to the 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 we'll probably use against City? Might be a sign to see if Mourinho is finally seeing the 3 at the back as more than a reactive option.

Probably a lot of rotating here. Can't see anyone who's starting vs City start here, apart from center backs.

Ah I see, didn't know it worked like that in a three way tie. Cheers

Think it's really important for Rojo and Fellaini (if fit) to get 60 minutes.

    Romero
    Darmian Lindelöf Rojo Blind
    McTominay Pogba
    Mata Fellaini Rashford
    Zlatan

    this.

don't think Jose will rotate and risk things much at CB.

Lukaku, Lingard, Martial, Matic, Young, Velencia ,Herrera and De Gea to be rested. Maybe Herrera will get a half to get his things going but I can see this side starting for us.

I like it, but I bet you Lindelof starts instead of Blind. Shaw may miss out to Blind on the left though.

Man for man exactly the side I would pick. Saved me the trouble of posting it. Cheers.

Not arsed about the result so long as we keep it below a 4-0 loss. Play the B team.

It is actually nice to see us not sweat it out in the final game. Jose's done very well so far this season to keep us in a comfortable position in all competitions. Only worry is no Pogba and how long Matic can go without getting injured (talking about the league).

Also think Herrera will start. He hasn't had game time and Jose will want to play him for 60 minutes midweek before the City game, assuming he is a starter for the latter.

    Romero

Think you switch Mata and Mkhi.

Mourinho wont change too much, he never does. He also loves the home record so, he wont want to lose no matter what. United 2-1 moscow .
Romero, bailly, lindelof, rojo, Blind, darmian, Pogba, mctominay, Mkhi, mata, Rashford.

Pogba may as well play the 90 as he'll be missing the three games after. I'd like Ibrahimovic, Mkhitaryan and Mata to start, and I'm sure Rashford will be involved as well. If Bailly or Jones aren't fit, then I think it will be Lindelof and Smalling if we play two CB's. Darmian and Blind are probably the most likely full backs, while Romero might as well play as it's probably one of his only two chances to play again this year. I really wish we didn't lose to Basel, then we could leave out a few more players, but it is what it is. Jose will want to at least avoid defeat in this game.

    Romero
    Darmian Lindelof Smalling Blind
    Herrera Pogba
    Mkhitaryan Mata Rashford
    Ibrahimovic

    Team should be...

    ---------------Romero---------------
    Darmian--Lindelof--Rojo--Blind
    --------Herrera------Pogba--------
    Mata--------Mkhitaryan--------Rashford
    ---------------Lukaku---------------

Subs: Pereira, Shaw, Tuanzebe, McTominay, Matic, Lingard, Martial

Yeah. We can lose 0-3 and we still win group. We would have to lose by 7 to possible not go through

I don't understand that. Because what if we lose 6-0 and Basel win by 10? Does it go on Head to Head before goal difference?

Why there is no news about Bailly, Jones and Fellaini? Hope we get at least Fellaini back and prepare him for the derby.
    I'd play
    ----------Romero----------
    Darmian--Tunzebe--Blind--Shaw
    -----Mctominay--Pogba-----
    Mata-----Mkhitarian-----Rashford
    ----------Zlatan----------

    Don't risk any one.

    Romero

    Tuanzebe
    Lindelof
    Blind
    Darmian

    McTominay
    Pogba

    Mata
    Ibra 10
    Mkhi

    Rashford

I don't understand that. Because what if we lose 6-0 and Basel win by 10? Does it go on Head to Head before goal difference?
Yes H2H between all three teams. A mini-league gets created between United, Basel and CSKA if all three finish on 12 points and all results against Benfica are discounted.

At the moment, United’s GD is +5, Basel’s is -1 and CSKA’s is -4. Basel’s GD can’t be changed as they play against Benfica on MD6 so their result will have no impact on the mini-league. They could win 20-0 and it’d make no difference.

The game against United and CSKA does however count and so it would take a 7 goal swing for us to go out because we would have a lower GD than both Basel and CSKA. (CSKA +3, Basel -1, United -2)

Similarly, if we only lose by 4, we’d still be going through as our GD would be +1, and CSKA’s would be 0. In that case Basel, would instead go out as their GD of -1 would be less than both United and CSKA.
