He looks terrible this season. Uninterested, unaware, slow and what not. It's almost as if he's some personal problem outside football.

Whatever it is, he needs to get a grip. We need Carrick. A Carrick & Fletcher combo should be really good.

I thought he looked a lot better tonight than he has done. Looked a lot more lively and like he cared. Also did a couple of those passes we've come to expect from him.

Yeh I thought he was alright tonight. He had a couple of really stray passes, but when you're down to ten men you sometimes do that - you play a ball to an area you know should be occupied by a teammate, but of course it isn't because that teammate is off the field!

I have trouble telling him and Gibson a part, so I`ll refrain from commenting in this thread.

He is just having a bad run of form. Hopefully it will end soon. The prob is that he needs games and he wont get to many if he keeps playing like this.

I'm surprised by the comments here so far, I though he was terrible tonight.

He was better, but still not very good.

He played the game at the pace of a Carling Cup game, when he ought to have been stamping his authority on it. By rights, he should have been the stand out player tonight, and he just looked pretty middling and sloppy. Again. The finger needs to be extracted, and fast.

I don't think he and Gibson should play together. I can't tell them apart...

Agreed. I can't believe he's actually getting some mentions in the MOTM thread.

He's having a piss poor season, and unless he can pick things up, I would say he's fecked his chance of going to the World Cup with England.

Conspiracy time: he grew a hidden, but sure, man-fancy for Ronaldo since the first day he arrived at OT. He was playing out of his skins in the last 3 seasons just to see Ronnie's happy smiles at the end of the day, or the end of the season for that matter. Needless to say Carrick never recovers from the mental blow that was the departure of a certain winker. Ever.

Carrick was as poor tonight as he has been so far this season. One pass summed up Carrick at the moment for me, De Laet had made a good run down the left, and all it needed was a simple pass from Carrick into space. He well over hit it and went out for a goal kick, despite the efforts of De Laet who busted a gut in an attempt to keep it in.

He wasn't moving into space like he can, often running behind players. I thought the fact he had been included in the side tonight would have been enough of a kick up the backside, but obviously not.

his head isnt at it at the minute -

its like he's on the pitch, but is thinking that kris akabusi is at home shagging his wife...

sort it out.

To be fair, Gibson didn't exactly make things easy for him, and Nani was the only attacking player who found some space.

Yes. I thought before the game this would be perfect for him to get back on track but it didnt happen. I know his form will return, but he really needs to get it back soon.

Almost everytime I saw Carrick do something well it turned out to be Gibson, so I probably shouldn't comment either.

I'd bet he lacks confidence from not getting a regular starting place.

He probably doesn't get a regular start because he lacks confidence.

This condition will only clear up with a total attitude change on his part.

To speed things up I suggest anti-anxiety/anti-depressant meds. Zoloft. 50mgs daily. If that doesn't work, ECT. If that doesn't work threaten to sell him to Ipswich for a discount; the threat of Roy Keane should either fix the problem, or show it to be chronic.

I thought Gibson stood up to play where it should have been Carrick driving the team. That's not Gibson's fault, ideally carrick should be the leader, but that's up to him. I am huge Carrick fan but he's off pace, making it look hard when it's usually so natural to him.

It's as if he's forgotten the rules of the game, and thinks he's playing netball. Any time he gets the ball, his feet are wedged solid to the ground

We know he's a quality player so it's clearly confidence. Not showing any signs of changing soon though

I reckon a few matches alongside Scholes would soon sort him out. Problem for him is that he won't get that, Fletcher isn't being dropped any time soon, and it's more likely Scholes will play instead of Carrick. And no chance of playing 3 men midfield's any time soon, and even if we did he's behind Anderson in the pecking order too

Needs to sharpen it up

He was slightly better today, but still uninspring and dissapointing considering what he is capable of...
Akabusi doing his wife won't help neither

Gibson disappointed me, he didn't really do anything, and he lost the ball when he tried something out of the ordinary.

Carrick was by no means great tonight, but I don't think he had a lot to work with tonight.

Gibson played twice as well as Carrick tonight which in fairness wasnt hard to do

I didn't notice anything useful from Gibson except for one or two times where he found a bit of space with the ball only to mess it up in the end - with one of those times leading to Fabio's sending off. His passing was too weak and sloppy, and he didn't seem to have any new ideas other than pass the ball to Carrick.

Though to be fair, he was involved in the goal.

Granted he wasnt perfect but still contributed more and showed alot more presence than Carrick who looked like he would rather be anywhere else but on the pitch

...Or hes had 3 seasons where hes been quality for us and is experiencing a dip in form after maintaining a good level of consistancy in his previous seasons.

Fletcher's form has gotten to his head. For the first time in a while, he knows that if he plays like shit, he won't start.

Also, I think he really benefits from playing in a settled midfield that is the same game to game.

Maybe we are just comparing him to Fletcher too much. Carrick is still doing what he always did.

That is not true. He was dropped at the start of the 07-08 season due to poor form. For some time, Fergie prefered Anderson and even Hargreaves to Carrick, but he regained his form and ended the season in superb form as our best midfielder.

My theory is that his confidence has been completely drained after the dominance of the Barcelona midfiled in the CL final.

Definitely a confidence issue - he's not getting stuck in half as much and is seemingly unwilling to attempt those magnificent cross field passes that we've become so used to over the last 3 years. It worries me that he's a shadow of his former self at the moment, but I find it very hard to believe that this will go on for much longer.

He was letting Andershow and Hargreaves' form get to his head. Going from a certain starter to starting based on form is a huge transition. in 06-07 it was pretty much written in stone that he would start alongside Scholes. After his injury in 08 he was pretty much a certain starter and same with last year.

There is alot of pressure placed upon a player when he knows that if he doesn't play well he won't play. Tevez suffered from this badly last year.

It is always in the back of player's minds. Some let it get to them and some thrive on it (Fletcher).

^ I agree with this. But tonight was a great opportunity to get some of that confidence back, unfortunately he left it in the locker room.
