Rio Ferdinand has hit out at David Moyes’s tactics as Manchester United manager, claiming some of them were “embarrassing”.

The former England and United defender has set out a string of criticisms of Moyes’s ill-fated reign at Old Trafford in his autobiography #2 sides.

Ferdinand said the players became confused about how Moyes wanted them to play.

“Moyes’s innovations mostly led to negativity and confusion,” he said in an extract from the book, which is being serialised in The Sun.

He added: “The biggest confusion was over how he wanted us to move the ball forward. Often he told us to play it long. Some players felt they kicked the ball long more than at any time in their career.

“Sometimes our main tactic was the long, high, diagonal cross. It was embarrassing. In one home game against Fulham we had 81 crosses! I was thinking, why are we doing this? Andy Carroll doesn’t play for us!

“The whole approach was alien. Other times Moyes wanted lots of passing. He’d say: 'Today I want us to have 600 passes in the game. Last week it was only 400’. Who cares? I’d rather score five goals from 10 passes.”

Ferdinand, who left United for Queens Park Rangers in the summer, said Moyes brought the “mentality of a small club” to Old Trafford. He revealed one of the first signs of future problems was when Moyes banned the players from their ritual of eating low-fat chips on the night before a game.

Ferdinand also disclosed his upset at being left out of the United side that played Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

He said Moyes took the players to a park to practice their set-pieces, which he said was "bizarre".

"It was amateurish," he said. "I mean, why not just send Bayern an email or a DVD"

And as they were standing in public, Moyes told Ferdinand he would not be playing as he wanted a bit more pace in defence.

"It killed me," Ferdinand said. "Inside I wanted to scream and grab him. I'm a team player, so I just had to bite my tongue and stand there. But it was probably the worst single moment I ever had at United.

"I'd never been dropped for a big game like that - and to drop that on me in front of everybody."
Thank god he's not our manager anymore, is all I have to say.

Jesus, some very harsh words there. I believe every single one of them though.

Still feel sorry for Moyes; I mean who could turn down the opportunity to manage United if they'd been told by the greatest manager of all time that they're fit for the job?

DM didn't come into it thinking he was an imposter, he thought he was up to it - but ended up losing all credibility and leaving looking like a mug.

That part from Rio about the small club mentality was interesting; we used to set up so negatively against big teams, and then start bringing on defensive players if we went 1-0 up. Just didn't feel like United.

Don't think Rio's being very classy here though, but as KM says above - he needs to sell books.

Having said that, I'd like to know if there was any truth in the rumours Moyes asked Rio to study Jagielka.

Finally

Looks like Moyes really was as clueless and amateurish as we all thought, and then some.

Oh dear! Not surprised at all, can't wait to hear more. Also from Vidic and Evra.

I mean how just how can you as Champions not even qualify for Europa League? Anyway, good for us and good for Everton too, actually that he'll never ever manage us/them again!

I think Moyes taking over at United was a bit like a kid playing FIFA for the first time with his mates. The second they hand him the controller, they tell him "Press [shoot] to shoot, but make sure you hold it for a while, or your shot'll be too weak." And Moyes was so afraid of his shot being too weak that he held the button too long. The result is blasting it into the stands, which is twice as embarrassing.

When he came in, he was so afraid of being seen as too soft that he tried to be harder than he is. He barged in and started demanding things left and right, wanting the club to bend to him immediately, which only ended up throwing things off balance. He was trying too hard. Like that midlife crisis dad trying to look "cool" in front of his son's friends. If you're the proper fit, you don't have to try to be the proper fit.

He's not as horrid a manager as everyone thinks he is. He just overdid it. He wasn't himself, he wasn't natural. He was way too focused on being SAF's replacement and not focused enough on being Manchester United's manager.

Just seems to be par for the course these days- even from Keane to SAF have done it while still playing or managing. Remember the Keane insight into Mick McCarthy's management tactics -Harry Ramsden's fish 'n' chips challenge the night before the match. This could be nearly as entertaining/bewildering.

Haha that's pretty damning though Rio's displeasure with Moyes was apparent last season anyway.

Wonder what he says about Sir Alex and before.

Btw, he deserved to be dropped last season.

Love the bit about the passes. First thing that pops to mind is that Everton game where we just passed it around the midfield and defence all game without even trying to penetrate. Definitely seems like the try to get 600 passes thing and 400 passes isn't good enough

Btw, i don't get not having 1 fixed way of playing critique. As the same could be said about Sir Alex' last couple of years atleast but he made it work.

I'd love to see what differences Rio has listed out if any.

This is going to be great. Don't get why some are offended that Rio is speaking out about this. I want to hear exactly what went on. Moyes is welcome to say his side too. But the story and the blame of last season needs to be told.

YESHHHHH, We'll GOOO for it.
They have Pardew. Moyes will be welcome after that tbf. Ex Players at Everton atleast spoke highly of him.
But Kid has a point. Newcastle appointed Big Sam and they had the same complaints about how Sam was all about winning the ball and nothing to do with after they got the ball. Anyway most of these sounds really jarring. His book and he has to sell, but why wash dirty linen in public? I'm sure Ferdinand is not blameless in all this.

One thing I'd say though, I was pumped up for the Bayern second leg, but we approached both the matches as if we were some pub team. It looked all rosy for us, because we played with a lot of heart, but by god we were terrible, conceding possession and getting starry eyed at Bayern.

The most shocking thing there is Rio thought he deserved to play in big matches. He was fecking shockingly bad last season.
I think he was surprised that he was dropped for the away leg after having a solid performance at Old Trafford.

I know it's unseemly, but I can't get enough of this stuff. Sort of like watching Mean Girls-the more dirt slung Moyes's way, to me, the better.

At the end of the day neither Moyes (thank God) nor Rio are associated with the club. It can be deemed unseemly but it's something the club can only put behind.

Hopefully more comes out. At this rate will Moyes find a job? Maybe Championship might be his level.

I agree. The Champions League is starting this week and we're not in it mainly thanks to him so I'm all for Moyes-bashing.

I'm such a bitch.
