Will Ronaldo ask to leave in the summer?

The graveyard shift manages to score 73 goals last season. United have scored 23 goals in the 16 matches since he's joined - a pace of 20 less goals in a season. Not to mention the deterioration in play that has seen us go from 2nd last season to 7th now.

Forget about solving problems. The issue is much worse than that.
Half of that 20 is the freak 9-0 over Southampton

This version of Ronaldo isn't anything special.

Maybe not, but he is still one of the very best players of all-time and has managed a goal pr. game in the Champions League this season (in a crap team). For me, it would be sad to see him playing in the Europa League or Conference League, just because United is in such a mess.

I hope, he will! CR7 is a great player, but was the wrong signal to many players. Instead of addressing the needs, we signed glamour and drams.

He was but he isn't now.

It wasn't just Ronaldo we bought, do you also place equal blame on Varane and Sancho? Two absolutely top class quality players?

Ronaldo is a big problem in this team.

He created more problems than he solved. Sancho and Varane solved more problems than they created as a signing.

1. We needed a CB who is quick, he will not impact the team in a negative way
2. We needed a winger, scouted Sancho for years.

Ronaldo on the other hand, we begged Cavani to stay, we worked 2/3 years on Greenwood's growth in preparation for him to become our ST when Cavani leaves.

We wanted to play a fluid front 3 that were mobile, good all round players.

Ronaldo is nothing but a tap in merchant now. Yes, a great one but he offers close to 0 if he doesn't score. he can't cross, cant pass, can't hold up the ball and gives out a a negative attitude towards team mates when they dont pass to him.

People will argue, he is the reason we got CL qualification or the goals he scores, yes but if he wasn't there someone else would have scored the goals and the team would be alot more cohesive.

I think it's best for all parties if he does. I hope he doesn't ask to leave I'm hoping it isn't a big ruckus and is respectively handled by all parties.

He wasn’t even a transfer target. One of the strangest signings the club has ever made. The manager probably didn’t even know about it until he signed. Felt sorry for Ole in a way. I said it at the time, it would be the final nail in Oles coffin.

He’s done it once before , he will do it again!
I just hope it will be more mutual. We will have a new manager who will want to input his own philosophy and clearly its going to be a ground-up job, Ronaldo is more of an icing on top player dealing with a player like that in the latter days of their career is going to be a massive distraction that a lot of managers won't want.

Add to Ronaldo he has a couple of years playing left probably, he is going to want to compete for trophies not be part of a project which is what we will be. Add to that he will be 37 at the start of next season and 38 by the end. There is going to come an appointment where he has to become a bit-part player if he wants to keep playing in the premier league. I suspect he won't want that and would rather do somthing like go be a star at an MLS club.

But we will see.

He was but he isn't now.

He is no longer one of the very best players of all-time? Just because he is not currently spectacular doesn't take away from his legendary status in the game. And it is because of that status that I would find it sad to see him in the Europa League or worse - it doesn't have anything to do with how good he is or isn't now.

Is Pele still one of the best players in the world? I think you are misunderstanding what I'm saying - he was and always will be one of the greatest players to have played the game however he is not currently anywhere near that level and never will be again.

The bolded bit is why I would find it sad to see him play in the Europa League. Is that hard to understand?

You'd find it sad to see Ronaldo play in the Europa league, but wouldn't find it sad if United play in Europa ?

His last best chance of adding a substantial trophy to his CV was the failed move to City last summer (especially that extending his Juventus-stay was seemingly untenable).

No title-winning club (domestic or European) in England, Spain, Italy, France, or Germany will want him now.

No European club will offer him even half the wages he is offered at United.

Could he move to a lesser club for the sake of adding more Champions League goals? Possibly yes, but I see no reason why he should stop milking United for a cool 450,000 every week for another year and a half.

I don't know why this thread isn't locked already!
You can accuse him of a lot of things, but he's not the type who will be happy to stay on as a bench player collecting his wages.

His legacy and prestige is far more important to him at this stage of his career. An additional 10M is not really a big deal. I'm sure he would rather accept a wage cut and move to a big club, rather than sit on the bench.

So you care more about Ronaldo playing Europa League than United playing Europa League?

Amazing

I was very happy when he came back, now I would be happy to see him leave again.

It´s not working out, and neither him nor us can be satisfied about it - he´s on very large wages and is apparently guarenteed a spot every match no matter what.
I dont think he is to blame for the massive disharmony but I also dont think he´s helping it either.

I agree that he needs to leave. But please, Varane has already missed so many games to injury. And Sancho has been crap.

If it were not for Ronaldo taking the limelight off him, Sancho would be getting absolutely slaughtered by the media now.

All 3 signings this year have been decent at best. Certainly not worth the 100M+ on transfers we spent.

Nowhere did I write that.

Maybe you just poorly worded that statement. But that's what it sounds like mate.

I agree, Sancho has been crap but I have seen glimpses of Sancho. The other thing is Sancho and Ronaldo are at different stages of their career, Sancho knows he has to work hard and still make a name for himself, where Ronaldo at this point almost feels entitled.

I agree, the money spent on the signings have not worked out.

Our problem has always been recruitment, we looked like we are doing better and boom Ronaldo. its always the same with us, we take 1 step forward then 2 steps back.

People don't understand what impact Ronaldo had, Ole spent years building the squad and shape it the way he wants, got rid of Lukaku and the like to introduce Martial and Greenwood as the strikers, then got Cavani as a short term gap.

We spent pre season thinking Ronaldo, Greenwood, Sancho will be our front 3, the all of a sudden we got Ronaldo. It meant starting from scratch because the plays a different brand.

Listen to the Juve players, they said they had to change their game plan and base it around Ronaldo, how do you expect a manager to do that in 2 weeks?

Like who? Cavani was injured at the time, Martial with his paltry 4 goal return last season hardly fills fans with confidence. Then we have Rashford who arguably cannot operate successfully as a FC/ST. Greenwood perhaps could of seen us through but that isn't a certainty.

CR7 gets more hate than warranted imo.

CR7 is a good player if we had the team built around him, if he was in the plans. You dont build something then tear it down with one signing.

That is my point, it was a signing we didnt need at this stage of our development.

I could see it being some left field choice that nobody on here would come up with. Might even be a winger who Ralf reckons he can convert, who knows. I certainly don’t, but he’ll have his own ideas about what he wants from a centre forward and if ronaldo leaves he’s got a blank slate I guess.

A new centre forward who presses and allows other players to make runs ahead of them while they drop back into their position would suit Rangnicks style of play more, would it be better for Rangnick if he could replace Ronaldo or is he too good to let go?

I think he’ll probably replace him. Not that we’ll have to convince him to leave, I really doubt he’d be here next season anyway.

He wants to leave apparently.

Can't handle McFred quality

Why this thread popped up? am I missing something ? It won't be good to see him leave this way if we don't progress to C.L.

If we are knocked out in the cl i think he will leave. But to where though?

Only way he stays is if he was fluke the CL. He's had his nostalgia tour, if we miss top 4 then it is better for both parties that he leaves which I imagine is the most likely scenario.

And who was very much involved in the decision of Ronaldo to come back to United?

Are you sure it wasn't just (maybe ''fronted by SAF) but just another one of Woodward/Glazer's... "lets sell shit loads of shirts, with a high profile player purchase, and also boost our sponsorship income"... never mind how it effects the team?

As much as it pains me to say it. It’s best for both parties if he leaves.

If we had a fully functioning squad so we didn’t have to rely on the GOAT then that would be ok. Truth is we don’t have a functioning squad and Ronnie has lost his physicality so he is unable to carry us.

Not sure who would take him to be honest? Not sure I care for next seasons drama about his contract expiring either.

An interesting theory, but how do you account for the other 'Ole-knifing-in-the-back' meddling: his interview after the Everton game about the best players always having to play (unless injured) basically making Ronaldo undroppable, forcing Ole to NOT use Ronaldo as an impact substitute (which is quite ironic if you think about it).

Imo we shouldn't deny the fact how instrumental SAF was in bringing Ronaldo back.

I'm very thankful and of course hugely respect SAF, as any United fan should but imo that doesn't mean he can't do anything wrong.

Plus one thing I've noticed that most of our fans think SAF is still the same person when he left. He's 79 yo now.

My father used to be a ruthless tough as nails man. He didn't talk much and was very cold. But now as he got old he could cry when watching TV dramas. Or could talk to anyone who would listen about his younger days for hours. You got old you got sentimental and nostalgic. No one could escape age I guess, even SAF.

Yes, undoubtedly SAF was involved with bringing Ronaldo back, its whether SAF took the initiative, or did the Glazer's get him to act as a 'go between' knowing his past closeness to CR.
It may be stretching things a bit but there is no doubt Ronaldo's return, the statue he has within the game generally, as well as at United, was finally what did for Ole. As it just further exposed Ole's weaknesses, in particular the lack of experience in dealing with top/WC players.

Who knows, may be that was the 'master plan' i.e. to use one club legends return, to ease out another club legend, who was beginning to sink without trace after the Liverpool, City and then finally the Watford result?

True, ..."age does weary and the years do condemn"

Talking about the old days is a central tenant in the life of the Old (I know I'm 76 this year). At family parties, once the younger family members have paid their respects, they head for the hills!
