The Beatles. Obviously.

Next question, who was the greatest painter: Rolf Harris, Tony Hart or Michelangelo?

Greatest what?

This is bit like -Who's best, The England Cricket Team or The England Rugby Team ?

But to answer this way, if I was only allowed one discography I'd pick The Beatles marginally over Elvis.

I've never understood that saying..about the exception proving the rule.

I've never understood that saying.

I guess you haven't understood the ways of intelligent rhetorics or empirical studies.

I have no idea either, but it's good to card to play when you want to say 'I don't know'

did you delete your thread? I made a satisfying post about the faults of democracy and stuff that disappeared in to nowhere.

Yeah I did, I got the title wrong.

The good news is I'm about to post a new one in a matter of seconds.

Michael Jacksons death, unfortunate as it was, will have an impact on his popularity for a while I feel.

Beatles are the greatest of those 3 choices however.

I picked The Beatles, but if Elvis would have been shot in 1957, I think that people would rate him higher because of what he could have become. Unfortunately, we know, and that only hurts his status.
But I don't think his impact on the music scene should be belittled though. He had his breakthrough in a very weird era for music. He was banned, censored and heralded as Satan by many.
He was the greatest performer ever, in my opinion, but he never wrote anything significant himself, (and neither did Sinatra) so he can't really be considered as great as the Beatles. And regarding Beatles, the thought has struck my mind that they may have mastered the art of time travel and traveled in to the future and stolen the best songs, because they are so versatile. The were exceptional at every type of songs.

Wouldn't be surprised. The true greats are never properly recognised by their own generation.

Elvis doesn't even come close.

I've opted for the Beatles over Jackson for the reason that they were much more involved in the writing of their music than Jackson was.

Haven't really listened to Elvis or The Beatles, ever

The point alot of people are missing here is that Michael Jackson was of a generation the Beatles and Presley were of generations hence they dont deserve comparison. The Beatles and Presley will always be the only true musical legends of modern times. I honestly would be embarrassed to say that Jackson was even close to being in the same calibre

I just don't care for the Beatle's music though. My old flat mate's missus played it endlessly. I thought much of it was tripe. And hell there was a lot of it

That said I do like some of Lennon's solo stuff

But I know I'm a lone voice. Well done to the Beatles on their revolution of music. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have bland generic manufactured pop today. And we'd all be poorer for it...

Great entertainer yes.

The Beatles changed the face of modern music forever.

That's all.

Elvis created Rock'n'Roll, the same genre the Beatles earned all their accolades. He was the first real international superstar entertainer. He transformed blues and country genres into a new rock style that was copied by many. He was aptly dubbed "The King" for a reason. The man could sing, dance, play piano, acoustic and bass guitar, simply multi-talented.

Jackie Wilson: "A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man’s music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis."

Though I'm not surprised the English based posters are voting to a certain group from Liverpool. But why a poll with one band and two solo entertainers? That's like comparing Manchester United versus Muhammed Ali and Tiger Woods in a sense.

Surprised The Rolling Stones weren't nominated in this poll.

Found this interesting tidbit on wikipedia... if this session had been unofficially officially recorded, it would still be the highest selling album of all-time.

1965: "The Fab Four" meet "The King"

During filming of Paradise, Hawaiian Style, Presley returned to his Bel Air home. The Beatles were at the end of their second U.S. tour. Colonel Parker had been negotiating a meeting for some time, through The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein, though Parker simply saw it as a valuable publicity opportunity. The group arrived in Bel Air amid a flurry of elaborate security arrangements, made by Parker, at 10pm, on August 27, 1965.[181] The visit lasted about four hours. Many of Presley's closest and trusted friends— members of the so-called "Memphis Mafia"—were present, including school friend and bodyguard Red West, Marty Lacker, Jerry Schilling, Larry Geller and their girlfriends.[181]

Biographer Peter Guralnick maintains that Presley was at best "lukewarm" about playing host to people he did not really know, and it took a while for everyone to feel comfortable.[181] Paul McCartney later said: "It was one of the great meetings of my life. I think he liked us. I think at that time, he may have felt a little bit threatened, but he didn't say anything. We certainly didn't feel any antagonism. I only met him that once, and then I think the success of our career started to push him out a little, which we were very sad about, because we wanted to coexist with him."[182]

Marty Lacker recalls Presley saying: "'Quite frankly, if you guys are going to stare at me all night, I'm going to bed. I thought we'd talk a while and maybe jam a little.' And when he said that, they [The Beatles] went nuts."[183] The group told stories, joked and listened to records. The five of them had an impromptu jam session.[182] "They all went to the piano," says Lacker, "and Elvis handed out a couple of guitars. And they started singing Elvis songs, Beatle songs, Chuck Berry songs. Elvis played Paul's bass part on "I Feel Fine", and Paul said something like, 'You're coming along quite promising on the bass there, Elvis.' I remember thinking later, 'Man, if we'd only had a tape recorder.'"[183]

Ringo Starr played pool with two others that night; George Harrison "looked to most of the guys to be stoned" on arrival and allegedly smoked a joint with Larry Geller and talked about Hinduism (see: 'Influence of Colonel Parker and others'). Parker played roulette with Epstein.[181] However, Guralnick claims The Beatles were, overall, disappointed by the visit. They still reciprocated with an invitation for Elvis to visit them, but only some of Presley's "Memphis Mafia" accepted. "John Lennon went out of his way to tell Jerry [Schilling] how much the evening had meant to him" and asked Schilling to tell Presley, "'f it hadn't been for him I would have been nothing.'" Schilling says that when he told Presley he did not say anything, but "just kind of smiled."[184] (See: '1970–1972)').

You say he created Rock 'n' Roll but he didn't write the music, and while many black musicians copied his mannerisms, they were already playing similar music before Elvis came along.

Plus, at least half of the people who have voted for the Beatles in this thread aren't even English.

Of the three I'd pick Elvis- the fact he could be so big in Britain getting number ones to this day despite just a single performance on British soil says an awful lot about how incredibly influential he was.

Elvis was a shill. Not better than Jackson for entertainment and far inferior in terms of actually having any input into his songs. Wildly overrated for cultural reasons. brought Rock n Roll into the limelight with his image but to say he created it is ridiculous....man couldn't write a song if his life depended on it.

Beatles easily....and by a long long long way...And haven't we already done this poll when Jackson died?...Why are we doing it again?

Of course it's ridiculous. He just popularised an existing style of music(black music)

Seems like people missed it if we did as people kept suggesting it, and I had some PMs asking. Can't remember who won it, or who the candidates were.

I think we need to have an archived forum to keep all the polls in.
