Where is the love?

For the first time i can remember in over 40 years, there isn't a single player in the squad that I would be overly gutted if they left. We don't even have a cult favourite anymore, someone who may not be the most gifted but at least puts his all in, or is a maverick.

That feels the same for everything nowadays, especially as we get older and become more cynical. Also, whenever I see players or the club come out with their bullshit PR efforts, which are clearly just void of any honesty and purely there to big themselves up like every feckwit on Instagram does, I immediately recoil. So their promoting has the adverse effect as far as I'm concerned and makes me feel even more detached.

Meh fans are fickle. A few months ago Bruno was Cantona and Luke Shaw Roberto Carlos.

But I'm not old or cynical. Just had enough and bored of it all.

Yeah but you're older than me so maybe you don't know you're cynical because of your old brain?

But seriously, it does get boring not actually achieving anything. If I wanted to see that I would just turn the TV off and look in the mirror.

It’s a tough time to be a Utd fan right now, as we all know. I still think there’s a couple of players who stick out. Luke Shaw still shows glimpses of an amazing attacking fullback sometimes, and his close passing is still as good as any. Fred has the odd Ando vibe for me and I can’t dislike him (even if he’s not quite good enough). Ron’s arrival has to me taken a bit of a light away from Fernandes and he’s not really shone since the shine was given to his fellow Portuguese. I still hope he can get back to the form we saw prior to last season.
I get what you mean but for me there’s still a few players to love. De Gea and Varane could be there too. Granted it’s not exactly the teams of yesteryear but if we look at football generally, I think that’s the case everywhere? There was always a player to love in the prem- Jimmy Floyd Hasslebank, JJ Okocha, Mat Le Tis. Loads of them over the years for other teams as well as Utd. For me there’s very little to love about the modern footballer in general, not just at Utd.

Uhm. So how do fans of non-stop teams cope? Although I suppose you guys have been spoiled and it's hard to see that disappear.

The days of cult hero’s are gone. They’d just be called shit online and everyone would demand a new signing.

I don't concern myself with the lives of shit team supporters, but I assume that they understand that they don't have the financial power to theoretically compete at an elite level nor are they bombarded online with soundbites from their players saying "biGgEst CLub iN ThE wORLd".

It's nothing to do with being spoiled because we haven't been spoiled in almost a decade and I've still found joy from time to time when we actually have a decent game, but the numbing effect of continuous false dawns has watered down my optimism and hope to the point that it's as strong as that shite you moose shaggers call whiskey.

Yeah, ok, fair enough. (Also about the whiskey I suppose. I have no idea really. I'll also deny the moose bit cause I'm legally obliged to.)

It's weird, you'd almost want United to pipe down a bit then, but that would make no sense with the stars and financial power you have. Time for 'the people at the office' to start making sense I guess, and put that money to use instead of frustration.

With all the stories about Mendy, Zouma, Greenwood and he-who-you-can-deduce-from-stats at Everton, I don’t think there’s any love for footballers at the moment.

If they turned some of that money into "free paper hats for all fans" that's something I could get on board with but I doubt it'll ever happen.

I really like Bruno Sancho and Varane. Indifferent about the rest.

This season made me turn on my favourites like Rashford. Feel dirty even bad mouthing him. Clinging to the champs league turning it around, madness

For me, I'll always love Ronaldo. He's a legend in my eyes but right now its just painful to see. I can see he's trying hard but his body has left him behind. He needs to become an impact sub to retain his effectiveness, but I do love him.

Then there are some players who I think have a lot of potential and the right attitude: Sancho, Dalot, Elanga.

The moment Elanga tells Bruno or ron to fek off after they glower at him for trying something is when I will fall in love again.

We do have a player that puts it in, all the time and every single time. Fred.

Yet gets constantly criticised and beaten down by our fans. So there you go. When you're a failing team everybody tends to get thrown under the same bus.

It is definitely a factor of modern football fandom. I can’t help but think that Yorke and Cole would be derided for scoring 15-20 goals because we need a 30-goal a season scorer. Meanwhile Teddy would called slow and old and Ole would be nothing but a decent option off the bench.

I don’t know what it is. Maybe access to stats. We can see football across Europe live. The warped expectations because of Ronaldo & Messi etc. Even the second tier of Aguero and Lewandowski change perceptions of what a top striker looks like.

Sorry for hijacking the thread but Lewandowski and Aguero are not the same tier at all.
Lewandowski is one of the best strikers to ever play the game. Aguero is top5-10 striker of the decade. Huge difference.

I mean everyone not Ronaldo or Messi who clearly exist in a class of their own regardless of how good Lewa might be. And I’m not convinced Aguero wouldn’t have had similar numbers if he’d played in the Bundesliga for Bayern rather than Atletico and City.

Well not overly gutted, but I'd be sad to see Rashford and McT go. It's nice to see youngsters who have been at the club for most of their lives do well - and I think there's still potential for that. McT also has a great attitude - one that I wish more players had.

I also have great hopes for Sancho and hope he'll prove how good he can be in the coming years, and someone I'd be disappointed if left without realising that potential. Right now he's just a new signing who can't quite find his comfort zone.

Nothing to do with not being successful, I grew up as a utd fan in the 80s, its about characters and mavericks, and in all honesty players who seemed to give a shit and at the same time enjoyed it.

Great post.

Top class player
Clearly identifiable workhorse
Part of a winning team

When all of those three become the criteria for liking a player or not, it's not going to end well for either party
