As we head towards yet another trophyless season (bar a miraculous CL run), would be interested to see who out of the current squad posters expect to be with us for the start of 2022/23.

Of course, the difficulty of saying exactly what can/will be done to this squad is a complete mystery, what with no idea who will be our next manager, but looking at the squad holistically, there are a lot of decisions that need to be made in terms of players and their contracts next season, as well as the end of this.

Current squad is (name - age - contract end date - O=option for a further year ):

GK
David de Gea - 31 - 2023 (O)
Dean Henderson - 24 - 2025
Tom Heaton - 35 - 2023 (O)
Lee Grant - 39 - 2022

Defenders

Raphael Varane - 28 - 2025
Harry Maguire - 28 - 2025 (O)
Victor Lindelof - 27 - 2024
Eric Bailly - 27 - 2024 (O)
Phil Jones - 29 - 2023 (O)
Luke Shaw - 26 - 2023 (O)
Alex Telles - 29 - 2024 (O)
AWB - 24 - 2024 (O)
Diogo Dalot - 23 - 2023
Axel Tuanzebe - 24 - 2023
Brandon Williams - 20 - 2024

Midfielders
Scott McTominay - 25 - 2025 (O)
Nemanja Matic - 33 - 2023
Paul Pogba - 28 - 2022
Fred - 28 - 2023 (O)
Donny van de Beek - 24 - 2025
Andreas Pereira - 25 - 2023

Forwards
Bruno Fernandes - 27 - 2025 (O)
Jesse Lingard - 29 - 2022
Juan Mata - 33 - 2022
Marcus Rashford - 24 - 2023 (O)
Jadon Sancho - 21 - 2026 (O)
Anthony Elanga - 19 - 2026
Cristiano Ronaldo - 37 - 2023 (O)
Edinson Cavani - 34 - 2022
Anthony Martial - 26 - 2024
Amad Diallo - 19 - 2025
Facundo Pellistri - 19 - 2025
Tahith Chong - 21 - 2022

Not too sure on how reliable the 1yr options are as I took this all from transfermarkt. What it does show though is that:

-~30 players considered to be part of the senior squad (33 in the list, so perhaps a few less if you exclude the likes of Pellistri and Chong).
-8 out on loan.
-6 players are out of contract this summer and all very likely to go, so we are left with 27 come the Summer.
-10 players will have one year remaining at the start of the Summer, with arguably 5/6 of those considered to be 1st team regulars (albeit some have 1yr options).

We have been screaming out for years to clear the deadwood, and the 2022/23 season seems like the prime season to do so. Focussing more on who we currently have, who should be given contract extensions, and who should be sold before they can go for free in January, as well as those who realistically should be sold with more years on them without leaving us too thin on the ground.

Mason Greenwood
GK - one or the other
Defender - two of the three
Midfielders - Matic is done, Don't think Pogba will stay, Pereira looks to be sold
Forward - Only one that is questionable is Ronaldo. I don't think he'll want to stay if we're not in the CL. Good riddance I say. The rest have no business being here. I added Greenwood to the list as he's gone and we need to account for that.

Quite a culling there, leaves us with 19. Would require quite a few investments in the Summer to make it a squad with depth.

This is the critical point. The board hopefully will realize blowing 100M plus on Rice and maybe a similar amount for a forward will not work as a major overhaul is needed. I would far rather see us buying 5 or 6 players in the 30-40M range who are young and have potential to improve as part of a full rebuild. We can generate some funds with outgoings, nothing massive but looks like we will get around 10M euro for Andreas and we can reasonably expect to add some more by selling players like Axel and Brandon who are not going to make it here. A proper summer of investment with a strategy is needed which is why I was ok with not spending in January with the caveat that we do things right when the new manager is appointed.
