United contact Gary Neville and other ex players in the media

But the likelyhood is getting them to shut up and stop slagging United and the board off in the media

No chance. They get well paid to tell these things and ignore similar stuff when it comes to certain other teams.

“bunch of fecking clowns”

You can understand why United would do this, from a PR perspective. However, if we are going to continue to be a s-t show all the glad handing in the world won't save them from bad headlines.

The simplest way to stop the class of 92 criticising us would be to stop being so easy to criticise. Win games. Win trophies. Simple.

United aren't being attacked purely because of perceptions. The roof leaking at Old Trafford, Carrington becoming dated, no trophies in five years. These are realities. If you don't want to be called out on them then you need to take steps to fix them. Gary Neville and Paul Scholes aren't going to suddenly become cheerleaders for Richard Arnold if United continue to be bad. Its that simple.

This club is a joke shop.

"Bridge-building" Why? We need to move on from the "United Way" bolloxology and pandering to the past.
In before the we are an embarrasment comments...
Nope. ^^

It's a move so the club (more specifically, Arnold) gets to control the narrative.

Yep. A very Woodward-y move on the face of it. Let's hope he doesn't continue to read from The Book of Woody moving forwards.

According to Daniel Taylor and Ornstein we've contact Neville, and other players, I imagine Scholes and Rio to apparently ask their opinion on how we can do better, or to maybe even ask them to join the club. I think asking them back is a stupid idea and it's basically United DNA all over again. But the likelyhood is getting them to shut up and stop slagging United and the board off in the media

Before reading the thread, I'm gonna make a few predictions for shits and giggles.

At least one person has said:

"OMG, that club is run by morons"

"Friends FC"

"We're doomed"

"We're a shambles"

"Co92 FC" or a variation of such.

Posted a gif to display their disappointment.

How close am I?

close thread. Spot on.

Pretty sure they're being called to vote for the next manager as there's a stalemate at board level.

The candidates are ETH and Poch, and the voting will happen in 3 iterations.
  • First, each ex-player invited gives their own unbiased (not influenced by any of their peers) vote of who their pick is at the same time after a count down to ensure no one gets unduly swayed.
  • Second, if the vote is not unanimous, voters of each choice are given the floor to try and convince their contemporaries of their thinking (PowerPoint slides, simulations, etc can all be used), after which another vote is taken.
  • Third, if the vote is still not unanimous, voters from each slide have a last chance to convince their contemporaries of their POV, and a third round of voting is taken.

If the result is not unanimous after 3 iterations, the candidate with the majority of votes wins.
If there is an equal split, all the invitees are chucked out with the uncomfortable realisation that these decisions are not as straight forward as they seem.

Of course it's all extremely wild conjecture, but I had fun writing it.

Not sure how this is beneficial in any way. Does Arnold want to get in firsthand to stop the mean, nasty ex-players from saying bad things about the club or something?

I am absolutely flabbergasted not one of the fake United fans have said Friends FC or Co92 FC yet.

I consider this a missed opportunity.

Just a bit of PR.Nothing wrong with that.Move on.

Large global company wants to control media output about them, colour me shocked…

This forum is full of complete and utter bellends

They're just bandwagon merchants, get carried away and are biased. I wouldn't trust them with anything outside of ambassadorial. We shouldn't need them to convince players either.

Over the likes of City, Madrid etc.? If you are a player who's career is ultimately short and you just want to win as much as you can and earn as much as you can, we are honestly not the place right now for many I'm sure. Yes we are still the biggest club but there are many more factors that go into these decisions

As for Rio and Evra, yeah they are more like fans at times but that's why it all depends on the role they do. If it's to convince people to join when there is a lot of competition for them then I would trust them over most others. Also if even half their passion for playing was transferred to most of our players then who knows. They may get all excitable etc. but they worked damn hard to get to the top and stay there - we shouldn't ignore them just because they get excited

The reason this is a bad idea is nothing to do with sentimentality, or pandering to the past.

It bad because the fact is none of them have been successful in developing the structure of a club, especially at the level of Manchester United. A number have also failed as managers. What advice is there to take from them?

They may have been fantastic players, have some ideas etc, but so do the factory workers - it doesn't mean they have anything like the acumen to be near the board room commenting on how the factory should be run.

I feel like we already have this connection to the club with Fletcher, which is not a bad thing if he is supported by experienced football people which I guess Murtough is supposed to be. We don't necessarily need another 3 or 4 in that vein, we need a top class manager and executives that get on with the job.

It's an obvious move from the Glazers even if only for PR.

GNev is probably the most influential and well known United critic, he's essentially made a whole new career off the back of our issues...if Arnold can influence him, even minimally, it's a win for the Glazers. If, in the highly unlikely scenario, Arnold can create some kind of hollow job and get him back onto the United payroll, he silences him. We're a business and a brand first and foremost these days.

Players will more than likely choose a club based on where the trajectory is, who the manager is, and how the team play. They won't need Rio, Evra etc. to pitch anything new to them, it wouldn't add any value in most cases.

What stupid bridge are they building? Sounds like "please don't criticise us".

The Glazers and our board just don't want the scrutiny and can't handle being told how incompetent they are. I hope Neville and co tell the clowns to go feck themselves.

Rio and Scholes shouldnt come near our board as an advisory. Same for Evra.

Neville would be more pragmatic.

Nah mate! Rio and Scholes are the more worthy opinions there!

But to the main point - Utd are a joke.

The fans need to apply more and more pressure on the owners to either sort the structure out or to feck off.

No you. Why you bothering with this joke of a club that’s living off the past?

Practice what you preach. Move on.
I don’t know who the feck you think you are telling me to go and support another club. I bet I’ve probably been supporting this club a lot longer than you. What I do know is that I cant stand people like you telling others to go and support another club, its such a childish post, says so much about you and all the others that come up with that stupid comment.

Why is it a bad idea?

these people know football, and know the club, not sure its such a bad idea myself.

But doubt they are being asked to come back, moreso just the club wanting ideas on moving forward, which shows willing and positive moves from the club.
Because what would players who regularly won titles at the club know compared to the all knowing armchair Caf experts? Once these experts have decided that the "United Way" is a sham and responsible for all our failings, how dare the club try and seek out opinions from serial winners?

Because Ole didn't win us leagues and CLs, don't you realise it's an anathema to even contemplate involving former players in roles at the club?

If the club is a joke to you and living off the past (your words) then we don’t need or want you as part of the fan base. It’s that simple.

My suggestion is pick another team that causes you less hassle and quietly close the door on your way out.

This is one of those things that *sounds* like a good idea, but is actually a terrible idea.

First and foremost, just because they might have been good players, the likes of Neville, Scholes and Ferdinand had nothing to do with actually running the club.

Secondly, 99% of United's problems begin off the field. What experience do Neville, Scholes and Ferdinand really have at the top level when it comes to running a football club? It's fair to say that Neville and Scholes' involvement with Salford hasn't always been plain-sailing.

What we need is experts, professionals in the art of running a football club. The foundations for success at Liverpool and City were laid by Michael Edwards and Txiki Begiristain. Managers like Klopp and Pep are the cherry on the icing on the cake.

And just who exactly is we? Do you represent someone? I didn't think so, so speak for yourself and leave plural out of it. And I couldn't give a feck what your suggestion is. And yes having to keep on calling back ex players is making us look like a joke of a club. Its time to make new legends for the club and stop relying on the old ones.

It's one where the club can't win.

Ignore former players and treat them like shit then we are run by bean counters who don't respect the club or its former players.

Do something innocuous like, talk to them in a non confrontational manner to try and mend some bridges, you are cynical and pandering to a "jobs for the boys" culture.

Between the Keane situation, Rio, Evra, Phil Neville getting sacked, Nicky Butt being passed.over for promotion, and Woodward going to town on trying to get a Hotel (that wasn't even on club property) to stop being built and more besides we have had a pretty bad relationship with ex players with Woodward at the helm.

To even just try to repair some of that is fine by me, its not like they are being offered jobs.

Literally every football club in the world tries to stay on good terms with club legends. On the face of it, that is all that is happening, the new CEO is reaching out to legends of the club who still clearly care deeply about the club to repair relationships that weren't there under the previous CEO. You're the one making this into something it so yeah, @TheReligion speaks for me too on this point.
