Cheney is a smart guy and a shrewd politician and businessman. He just happens to fall on the wrong side of most issues. If Republicans want to ever see their candidates in the majority again it will mean being less like Dick Cheney and more like Chuck Hagel.
 
No doubt about it, Cheney is more Wall St than Pennsylvania Ave, watch him run for Presidency in 2012 if he isnt in the Hague haha

I could name a few on here who I would guess are a lot more intelligent academically.

A politician needs a lot more about himself than just being "smarter".
