Top 5 Sci-Fi Movies

"Contact" should be up there somewhere

Back to the Future I
Brazil
The Matrix I
Event Horizon

of course Alien(s, 3) Terminator 2 etc.

I thought Minority Report was okay, then I read a review by this superb writer on a website, which just completely ripped it to shreds. Since then, I haven't been able to take it seriously anymore.

Seriously? You remember where you read it? Did he criticize the novel or the film?

Well you wouldn't put them in any top 5 list. Episode one was a total feckup. Episode two was alright. Episode 3 is about as good as Jedi.

I thought two was by far the worst of the new trilogy. What an awful love story we had to endure. The third wasn't as good as Jedi. . .the ending was too melodramatic for me and the whole film felt contrived. 'nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!'. All in all. . . Lucas should be ashamed of himself.

A brand new 'final' directors cut of Bladerunner is out shortly. Supposed to be the best version yet.

Is the new anniversary box set out yet? Apparently it'll have all the different versions. Not sure if I should buy it though, with HD DVDs coming into effect.

I thought it was awful.

I agree. The third installment was good until the ending with Anakin turning into the mechanical Vader. I heard so much about how awesome and terrifying it was and I was almost laughing at how funny it looked.

It was pathetic. . .didn't know what to think or feel - Should I laugh or cringe?? But the whole film felt contrived. We all knew the story. . .and the direction it headed in felt forced. I mean, the way Anakin suddenly became evil. I've watched them all again(original trilogy+new tril), and there's no comparison at all. Weaste's right about Empire, it's a brilliant film, love the dark undertones.(TT was similarly dark, which is why I think it's the best of LOTRs trilogy).

Empire is my favourite as well. Vader was immense in that one...

It also had Boba Fett.

All of them each have something cool but overall only Empire puts it all together perfectly. Jedi might have been the coolest but for the Ewoks, no offense to them but the should have put that one on the Wookie planet, Kashyyyk.

I thought the third new trilogy film was the only one decently good of the three. I actually thought it was a pretty good movie, if not for that horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible last Vader scene. HORRIBLE.

Lucas had a choice. Appeal to the audience that worshipped the original trilogy, or sell out to the kids who'll buy Jar Jar toys and pod racer games. Unfortunately for his credibility (but not his bank balance) he chose the latter.

Well, he didn't suddenly become evil, the path to the dark side was set with him feeling inferior to Obi-wan, Obi-wan's criticisms, and the death of his mother and him slaughtering the sand people (tuscan raiders) in episode 2. The problem with the prequels was not simply the direction, but the pace of the story across all three. It was fecked up in episode 1. Yes, you are right, the turning to the dark side did come on all of a sudden, and episode one should not have all been about a boy racing around a track.

The LOTRs is a totally different matter. For a start, it's not sci-fi, and it is based upon the writings of someone far more brilliant than Lucas.

I would like Return of the Jedi best, since it ends all the character arcs in such great fashion and has Vader's brilliantly done redemption. I mean, who doesn't get a little choked up when he throws the Emperor down that duct? It's just a shame that they put the fecking Ewoks in it, though. Those little furry cnuts annoy the feck out of me.

Star Wars trilogy (NONE of the new ones)
Matrix (only the first one, can't stand any of the others)
Alien and Aliens
First 2 Terminator movies
The Running Man

That first "Lord of the Rings" was good. Apart from the annoying little actor, the special effects in that cave when those monkeys are shooting the arrows and then that big fat devil appears, that was ace.

The third Star Wars was decent...although full of unnecessary corny dialogues.Episode I and II were absolute shit.

Empire Strikes Back
Matrix
T1/T2
Blade Runner

Terminator 2
Serenity
War of the Worlds (the remake - I was a cynic when I went to watch it, but quickly became one of its biggest fans)
Star Wars trilogy (the originalsm obviously)
2001: A Space Odyssey

That said, the effects look dated now, which I guess, we should've expected.
Honestly, I'm always astonished when I watch T2 that the effects have stood the test of time so well. Obviously there are some scenes which could be done better today (the T1000 being dragged behind the car for one), but there are many times in it where I feel they actually look better and more realistic than they would today with the overly computer-animated stuff that they always do these days.

Star Wars
Aliens
Terminator 2
Serenity (Because of Firefly)
Back to the future

They played Serenity after the match against Valencia last night, and I have to admit, I've never seen such a load of absolute bollocks in my life. To call the film crap would be doing diservice to its terribleness. Absolutely awful film.

Agreed. Was like watching a shite Sci Fi TVM on the Sci Fi channel, yet it's highly rated in imdb. Weirdos? I think so.

To cap it off Spoons, they then started playing a film called Brick, which on the surface of it looked interesting, but after 35 minutes I turned off and went to bed through it's brilliant ability of boring me to tears. Maybe Brick wasn't such a bad film, but after Serenity all the way through I couldn't stand any more oddness.

- Westworld
- Logan`s Run
- Outland
- Existenz
- Dark City

There was another good sci-fi, a bit older, probably from the 50s or 60s about some astronauts who end up in a parallel world, where the writings were upside down and stuff like that, very interesting. Cant remember the name of the movie anymore.

Not this http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049223/ ?

My 5

Akira
2001
Solaris (original)
Blade Runner
12 Monkeys

Has anyone watched Primer? One of the better recent sci fi's, low budget but very well done. Moon looks very good too, looking forward to watching it.
