Top 5 Sci-Fi Movies

Solyaris(Tarkovsky's original)
Blade Runner
Empire Strikes Back
Alien
Terminator 2
Can't argue with much of that. Prefer the original Terminator, and Gattaca springs to mind, very underrated IMO.

Blade Runner is a given, and either Solaris.

Tough call. I think the original Terminator was probably a better film, but T2 was a brilliant cinema/movie experience. Blew me away when I first saw it at the flicks.

Haven't seen the original Solyaris so I'd replace it with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan...the rest is ace, Spoons.

Check it out, mate. . .I think you'll love it. Make sure you're not tired, though.

Yeah T2 seemed to be the first movie that really used special effects superbly, that I recall anyway. Always preferred the original though, but both excellent.

Terminator
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Matrix
2001
Empire Strikes Back

Just so I'm on the right track that was remade with George Clooney, yes?

Matrix
Blade Runner
Empire Strikes Back
...
...

In no order ... can't think of a 4-5 right now.

Blade Runner
Star Wars
Alien
Terminator
A.I.

Special Mention to Akira and Ghost In The Shell.

I haven;t seen the remake. Have you?

Was all over Sky News and all. The power of advertising eh. That said, the effects look dated now, which I guess, we should've expected. And it's shame what they did with T3. . . then again, crap director and writers, so they got what they deserved.

Matrix I & II (not the 3rd shite one)
Terminator II
Star Wars
E.T. Extra Terrestrial
Sunshine (strange choice as it's new, however I loved it)

One thing that bothers me about film, is that a crap director can ruin something for ever. Take the Golden Compass, out shortly. I adore the Dark Materials trilogy, and am buzzing to see this movie. But they gave it to feckin Chris Weitz (American Pie). If he fecks it up he's ruined it for ever, and he probably will do as well.

Very true. The thing I don't understand is why they choose them in the first place. Just check out Jonathan Mostow's credentials. http://imdb.com/name/nm0609236/

What's more insane, is that T4's got an even more poor line up. A couple of writers and a director with a shocking CV. http://imdb.com/title/tt0438488/

Alien
Aliens
Empire Strikes Back
Terminator 2
Bladerunner

- Westworld
- Logan`s Run
- Outland
- Existenz
- Dark City

There was another good sci-fi, a bit older, probably from the 50s or 60s about some astronauts who end up in a parallel world, where the writings were upside down and stuff like that, very interesting. Cant remember the name of the movie anymore.

1) The Day the Earth Stood Still (original)
2) The Empire Strikes Back
3) 2001 Space Odyssey
4) Planet of the Apes (original)
5) Metropolis (original B&W version)

*I would have included 'Alien' but the ending ruined it for me. Who the feck would go back for a cat when your own life is in danger!

Solyaris(Tarkovsky's original)
Blade Runner
Empire Strikes Back
Alien
Terminator 2

Great list. I'd chuck the Matrix in there for Solyaris, since I haven't seen it.

Also Predator should get some recognition.

(I'd also try and squeeze in 'Running Man' somewhere... :nervous:

Arnie at his finest.)

Dark City's a good shout. Excellent movie.

Surprised no-one else has mentioned Gattaca though. Is this just a personal thing? I thought it was excellent.

Half our year level, and the ones below us, had to do Gattaca as a part of our year 12 'text.'

The Minority Report is good as well. There are some more movies based on Philipp Dick`s novels which are good... that strange `cartoon` movie with Keanu Reeves, A Scanner Darkly, was good.

Hard subject to choose really as there are quite a lot of top class scifi movies. If i had to choose 5 to watch i'd go with any of these;

Matrix (the first one)
Star Wars (entire series is fantastic)
Terminator 2
Back to the future
Alien

Another good one: Donnie Darko

(or is that more mystery/phantasy?)

And another one: The astronaut`s wife with Charlize Theron

Aliens
The Terminator
The Running man
Close Encounters
Planet of the Apes

I did love the Star Wars movies too & a little movie by the title "Fire in the Sky"

You legend!

"What happened to buzz-saw?"

... "'e 'ad too spleeet."

I thought Minority Report was okay, then I read a review by this superb writer on a website, which just completely ripped it to shreds. Since then, I haven't been able to take it seriously anymore.

not in any order...

Return of the Jedi
Blade Runner
Matrix
Terminator 2
Back to the Future
A brand new 'final' directors cut of Bladerunner is out shortly. Supposed to be the best version yet.

Aliens
The Terminator
The Running man
Close Encounters
Planet of the Apes

Fire in the sky? Is that the alien abduction jobby? Don't really remember it well, but I remember thinking it was pretty good.

Of all the Starwars movies, and I've been watching them over and over for 30 years, The Empire Strikes Back is the best of the 6 by some margin due its darkness and the way it mixes everything. Irvin Kershner did one hell of a job. It's not only a great Sci-Fi film, it's a great film full stop.

Be honest though, the new ones are total garbage aren't they?
