I know we're a few months shy of the end of the year but i'm interested to see what peoples opinions are so far of the top 5 films of the year. There's been some great films out but equally there's been a lot of rubbish on the screens too.

In no order here are my top 5

Gran Torino
Hangover
District 9
Damned United
Inglorious Basterds

Special mentions to Slumdogg & Looking for eric, and maybe a few more that don't spring to mind.

Not too sure on what is left to be released this year but hopefully theres time yet for a film to jump into the top 5, however it'll have to be great going by what i've listed above.

I'm going to see Hurt Locker tonight which has recieved decent reviews so who knows, maybe that could be thrown into the mix.

some good movies but bruno is the funniest movie of the year - much better than the hangover

for me in no particular order its

1. Bruno
2. Inglourious Bastards
3. Looking for Eric
4. Slumdog millionaire
5. Bronson

havent seen some of the ones you mentioned

I don't think I can remember 5 movies I've seen this year, but District 9, Basterds and The Hangover would probably be in my top 5.

I'm holding out for Sherlock Holmes in December, hoping that will be good.

State of Play
Gran Torino
The Hurt Locker
Terminator Salvation
District 9

Though there are a few films I haven't seen that could make it on to the list- Star Trek, Inglorious Basterds, Damned United, Public Enemies, Benjamin Button (500) Days of Summer

Special mention to The Hangover, Wolverine, Push and Angels & Demons for being good films as well.

There are a few good looking films left to be released off the top of my head, Whiteout, 2012, Avatar

For a film to see at the cinema and nnot have to think too much about 2012 looks perfect! Stupidly over the top scenes and the world falling to bits, what more can you ask for? granted it probably won't make the top 5 but it'll certainly be worth a watch, just for the sake of the big ass disaster scenes!

How good is the Hurt Locker? looking forward to that.

Do you have plans to See Inglorious?

It has Roland Emmerich directing it, which is as good a reason to avoid a film as any. I saw the trailer and within seconds, when it described the Mayans as 'mankind's oldest civilization', I knew that it would be terrible.

Another film I'm highly anticipating is Zombieland. I do love my zombies.:D

Yeah, but I am not in a rush to see it really. I have no doubt it probably is as great as everyone is saying, but it's a great film I'm not too bothered about seeing.

Hurt Locker is superb, I was actually surprised at how good it was. It's a beautifully shot, incredibly tense movie and it really brings home the realities our troops are facing out in the middle east. You'll have to remind yourself to breathe on half a dozen occasions if you're going to the cinema to watch it

Well i'll still watch it, although isn't that the director from that other end of the world type film? that was pretty shit I think. I'll just go for the lound noises and flashing lights :D

I haven't seen zombieland trailered yet, i'll look out for it.

I've seen two films that look very simlilar advertised though lately, one i think you've mentioned. Sherlock Holmes & the other being Dorian Gray I think. To be honest neither trailer has made me want to to see them!

Seriously if you can, get to see Inglorious - I was exactly the same and had put it off for a week or so because I wasn't really too fussed with seeing it. But having watched it last night i'd definitely reccomend seeing it.

I am going to the cinema to see Hurt Locker, I love anything to do with the middle east issues, and by that I mean the documentaries and such on tv so I can't wait to see it.

It's got a lot to live upto though because over the past two nights i've seen Inglorious & District 9!

 did it? That's a bit of a bald claim since no one has a feckin clue about who/what/where or when the oldest civilization dates back to. I've read a fair few theories, and none that name the Mayans, mainly because no one really knows when their civilization started. Though it's never been dated as far back as Mesopotamia or Akkadia or Sumaria, or plenty of others

It's better than District 9. Well, in my opinion it is anyway

'Män som hatar kvinnor' is the best film so far this year by far.

That would be the film adaptation of Stieg Larson's 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' for you english speakers.

Not a stunning masterpiece but a good movie and it hasn't been a great year for movies really.

I didnt think it was that good, a bit average actually. But yeah, has been a bad year for movies so far so it would be one of the better movies.

Inglourious
Hurt Locker
Gran Torino
Hangover
Star Trek

Edit: Added Gran Torino to the list above!

Nothing else has struck me as above average yet but I'm going to see Disrtrict 9 in the next couple of weeks and there are still a few supposedly good films that I haven't got around to seeing yet.

His track record is Independance Day, Godzilla, The Patriot, Day After Tomorrow and 10,000 BC, each one more terrible than the last.

Dorian Gray looks terrible alright, it looks like they've gone and Twilightised the whole concept.

Hard to argue with your first point.

I'm reading Dorian Gray at the moment and I was interested in the film initially, but after seeing the trailer I think I'll steer clear.

Speaking of Twilight, did anybody else hear about this new version of Wuthering Heights that was released, with this as it's cover:

ffs

Patriot is a good film imo. Day After Tomorrow is watchable as is Independance Day. Godzilla and 10,000BC are turkeys mind :)

Heh knew you would like it. Better than District 9 for you, or no?

Definitely on a level i'd say.

I'd struggle to put an order to the 3 films i've seen over the past few nights.

I thought Jeremy Renner was brilliant and thought the final scene in which it kinda shows him as being an ordinary bloke like one of us was a brilliant touch.

I don't know how to do that spoiler tag thingy or i'd probably say more!

I'll learn it for tomorow¬!

[/SPOILER just put your wording in those tags, like you would a picture or a quote. But obviously put another ']' on the end of the last spoiler tag there.

I think there is an actual thread on this film started by moses, and there is also a fair few comments in the movie review thread as well. One of the best films I have seen in a while, thought it was superb

I can't pcik an order but for me it would be

Gran Torino
Inglourious Basterds
District 9
Hangover

Haven't really got a 5th, am aiming to see Hurt Locker sometime soon though.

One of my favourite books DG, looks as if it's been warped into horseshit, shame.

Having just watched Star Trek I am going to have to revise my list- it was better than District 9. Surprisingly brilliant in fact, the casting was superb- especially Karl Urban as Bones, he was spot on.

The Hurt Locker is a good movie. Well shot and holds the tension very well. The only problem I have with it is that a lot of Iraq war veterans claim it's not very realistic.

Agreed, they are the only three that stand out for me (in the order you state them). Nothing else really jumps out to me. Although I haven't seen Gran Torino yet, so maybe it could jump into the reckoning.
